Or you know, maybe it's wrong to kill innocent people even if they're next to someone with a weapon, if the person with the weapon isn't a direct threat to you at the moment? Or do you subscribe to the idea that any male near someone with a weapon is a militant, like Obama does?

Protests in Benghazi today,

The University of Memphis' Progressive Student Alliance (PSA) presented a letter regarding the living wage to university president Dr. Shirley Raines today. Here it is being read aloud on the steps of the administration building:

And here's a terrible picture of Dr. Raines coming out of her office to talk to us:

According to the students who were in the PSA last year, this was the most successful letter presentation they've had. This was the first time the university president actually came out and talked to the students, and there's a meeting to be scheduled with the director of HR and some other bigwigs at some point. The PSA's gotten bigger since last year, too--at the kick-off meeting I went to on Monday, I was told that membership had doubled. I guess the world is changing for the better, bit by bit. :unsmith:

Here's the text of the letter:

quote:

Dr Raines,

Our university and our higher education system, like all out public services, should be a bedrock community institution displaying the best democratic values. It should be a place where workers are treated with dignity and respect that is due human beings. Our university should be a place where students can get an affordable and sufficient education.

According to its mission and values, the University of Memphis is committed to the social and economic advancement of the community. But these are just empty words if the administration disregards the university's own research on poverty and living wages, and simply goes on paying hundreds of campus workers less than the cost of a minimally decent life.

We are students who have learned our history, so we are deeply aware of the university's inception as a school for white students maintained by Black workers. The policies of the University of Memphis and out higher education system to pay poverty wages, defund public education, and restrict scholarships, disproportionately affect people of color because they are shaped by this history.

We want to be proud of our Tigers, but it is impossible to have pride in a university that disregards its history, squanders our tuition dollars, and locks out workers in poverty. Dozens of campuses across the country have passed living wage resolutions. The University of Memphis should be just as worthy of our pride as any of these peer institutions.

Hundreds of workers on campus--people who keep our campus clean, safe, and running--are struggling to survive. In the words of one custodian on campus, "With the money we make, it's impossible to make a living. I really do not want to work a second job, but as a single parent I have to. You have to juggle bills. It is really hard. It has to change."

For these reasons we urge you, Dr. Raines, to:

1. Immediately make a commitment to pay all campus workers at the University of Memphis a living wage. In 2010 this was $11.62/hr. this number should be adjusted upward for two years of inflation.

2. Immediately make a public demand on the Tennessee Board of Regents and the Tennessee Governor for the restoration of all public education funds that have been cut over the last 10 years (several hundred million dollars) and expand scholarships offered by University of Memphis

Yours,
Progressive Student Alliance

On Tuesday, Sean Smith, a Foreign Service Information Management Officer assigned to the American consulate in Benghazi, Libya, typed a message to the director of his online gaming guild: ”Assuming we don’t die tonight. We saw one of our ‘police’ that guard the compound taking pictures.” The consulate was under siege, and within hours, a mob would attack, killing Smith along with three others, including the U.S. ambassador.

In his professional and personal life, Smith was a husband and father of two, an Air Force veteran, and a 10-year veteran of the Foreign Service who had served in Baghdad, Pretoria, Montreal and The Hague. But when gaming with EVE Online guild Goonswarm, he was a popular figure known as “Vile Rat,” and alternately as “Vilerat” while volunteering as a moderator at the internet community Something Awful. Smith’s death was confirmed on Wednesday morning by the State Department and reported widely in the news media. But the first people to report Smith’s death were his friends. Their reaction was shock and mourning.

“My people, I have greivous [sic] news. Vile Rat has been confirmed to be KIA in Benghazi; his family has been informed and the news is likely to break out on the wire services soon,” wrote Goonswarm director Alex Gianturco in a message mirrored to Something Awful at 11:21 EST. “Needless to say, we are in shock, have no words, and have nothing but sympathy for his family and children.

British producer arrested over play about gay man

By AFP

Uganda on Thursday arrested a British theatre producer for staging a play in Kampala about a gay man despite a temporary ban by the country's media authorities, a police spokesman said.

Producer David Cecil was sent to prison until a bail hearing on Monday after being charged in a Kampala court, an AFP reporter said.

"There are two charges preferred against him, one of disobeying lawful orders contrary to the penal code and another of staging the play which was still under review," Ibin Ssenkumbi, a spokesman for the Kampala police, told AFP.

The groundbreaking play -- titled "The River and The Mountain" -- was performed at several venues around Kampala last month despite an injunction by Uganda's media council, the government media authority, which had placed a temporary ban on the play pending review of the script.

The play examines the plight of a man who comes out as homosexual and the motivations of Uganda's vociferous anti-gay lobby.

Written by British playwright Beau Hopkins, it was directed and performed by Ugandans.

Homosexuality is already a crime in Uganda but proposed legislation currently before parliament would see the death penalty introduced for certain homosexual acts.

Although legislators have said the bill could be changed, in its current form, anyone caught engaging in homosexual acts for the second time, or engaging in gay sex where one partner is a minor or has HIV, would be sentenced to death.

Public discussion of homosexuality -- including by rights groups -- would be punished by up to seven years in jail.

These sentiments, legislation, are being fostered, promoted, and bankrolled by the US Evangelical community, by the way.
