Plus it turns out the black coat is just a cosmetic item. So he got killed for nothing.

That is hilarious if true.

Episode 5 was actually really good. Genuinely exited to know what happens next.

Definitely. For most of the episode, I was dreading the obvious "twist" where it turns out that the only witness is also the murderer, especially when she seemed so guilty about the events six months ago. But then BAM! Whatever happens next, I'm intrigued.

I sure as gently caress hope we're done with the brother sister fetish poo poo

This episode was basically a microcosm of the whole season, one half awesome, and the other half terrible pandering

These last two episodes nearly broke me with regards to that. Thrown in the...other unsavory things from last episode and I'm close to dropping this.

Today's episode kind of shows that no one has really tried their best to get to the top of the tree. If Recon could blow a huge hole in the enemy defences, then with enough "suicide bombers", a small group would easily be able to get through.

Well, the (official) prize is just unlimited flight, isn't it? It's not surprising that after the first few tries, the serious attempts petered off. Especially if the penalty is "high" for self-destruct spells--and I'm betting you can't use it right at the start. Or maybe you can. This game is even more poorly designed than the last one, almost hilariously so. Like the guy came up with the EVIL PLOT first, then scrambled to try and come up with an MMO without having actually played one before.

In the novel, in the scene where Kirito asks Yui if she learned anything about the encounter, Yui also says this extra bit of information, which isn't in the anime:
"The spawning speed increases proportional to the proximity to the inner gate and when you actually get to the gate they would spawn at a rate of twelve per second."

(The following is about episode 23)
The boss fight was designed to prevent the players of ALO from reaching the gate. You can't make it too hard, or else the players will realized that it is impossible. You have to design it so it seems possible for the player's of the game. "If only we did this, it would have worked..." The secret is that with normal progression, players will never be strong enough to defeat it. This is also why Kirito is able to break through: his stats are abnormal. He doesn't fall within the realm of a "typical ALO player". It is entirely possible that ALO doesn't even let your stats get as high as Kirito's are. At this point, he is literally exploiting the game.

Makes you wonder if he could have made this easier on himself if he'd tried to contact a few of his fellow SAO survivors. I suspect they would find themselves able to use the same exploits.

It wouldn't surprise me if SAO really was a masterpiece compared to other full dive MMOs. Kayaba was definitely an evil psychopath for what he did, but it sounded like his goal was to create a world with a sense of wonder, and to realize that world by forcing the players to live it. That kind of madness could result in a much more inspired game than just a company trying to make a buck.

That's the real reason why he locked them in. He had to release on time, but his masterpiece wasn't quite finished yet. He'd need at least two years to put the finishing touches on the last levels of Aincrad. It would take a while for them to get high enough to see the unfinished content, but once they started shipping out more copies after the first ten thousand, it would only be a matter of time, and he would never be able to patch it before they broke through!

A plan formed...
