IF YOU ARE BUYING THE GAME FROM STEAM OR REACTIVATING AFTER A LONG LAYOFF, DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND VISIT THIS SITE FOR UPDATE TORRENTS - FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS TO CUT HOURS OFF THE UPDATE PROCESS! (This was updated 7/9/2012, please PM me or talk to me in-game if the torrent link dies!)![]() At 10 years old, Final Fantasy XI appeared to be heading down the slow path to shutting down. Hiromichi Tanaka (the much-hated developer of FFXI who left to poo poo all over FFXIV and ruin its launch) had returned to helm FFXI and introduced events with pathetic droprates or extreme difficulty curves that in many cases required fleehacks and third-party tools to complete. Players were quitting in bunches and primetime server counts were at or near 1000-1500 most evenings. Then this happened at Vana'fest last month: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vX5zZRWd-hk Seekers of Adoulin, the 5th full expansion to FFXI, has been announced for a 2013 release. This has sparked interest from both new and returning players, and a new thread seems appropriate to go over all the changes in the last few years and what you can expect in your return to Vana'diel. Also Tanaka has stepped down for 'health reasons' which in Japanese means 'retire or become Executive Producer of the soda machines forever' so now the game has a chance again. I need a new copy/I don't have copies of all the new content on my old character, what should I do? Most digital online retailers (Steam, Amazon, among others) sell the most current edition as the Final Fantasy XI Ultimate Collection Abyssea Edition. MSRP is $19.99, but it often goes on sale on one retailer or another so look around for that (I've seen it as low as $5 now and then.) You'll have access to all pre-Adoulin content regardless of how much or how little you had on your account, as well as a code to redeem a hat that makes levels 1-30 go by a bit faster. If you play on the 360, buy a PC copy for the access codes and pick up a used copy of the disc version (make sure it has Wings of the Goddess content on it) to install to the 360. RECENTLY PEOPLE HAVE BEEN CLAIMING SOME BERET CODES FROM STEAM DO NOT WORK. THIS MAY BE STEAM-BASED CODES OR ALL CODES IN GENERAL. EITHER WAY IF THE FESTIVE MOOGLE SAYS THEY HAVE NOTHING FOR YOU IT WILL PROBABLY BE FIXED OR MAYBE IT WON'T. If you play on PS2 you're apparently not getting the Adoulin content unless you live in Japan so suck it up and find another platform, literally any PC made in the last 6 years should be able to run FFXI without any issues. You can also purchase an authenticator directly from Square-Enix for ~$10. This adds another randomized password to your account for security as well as gives you access to an additional bag slot (between 30 and 80 spaces depending on your main bag size) that you can access anywhere in the field. If you just want the bag, you can disable the authenticator once you get it. What server is the main goonshell on? The Goon server is Quetzalcoatl and the Goon linkshell is SAGoons. You are allowed to pick your server upon character creation, so if you want to play with goons and have old goons give you free stuff/laugh at your dumb newbie questions/generally make starting the game a million times easier, make sure you choose Quetzalcoatl! There are rumors of an overflow shell on Cerberus, go spend $25 on a server transfer and report back to me please! If you have an existing/expired character from another server but would like to join us: First, if you were previously on Midgardsormr, you've been server migrated to Quetzalcoatl automatically! If you were on any other server, you can apply for a World Transfer. Plenty of info on how that works here. A World Transfer costs $25 and covers every character on your Content ID. The transfer generally happens immediately and can be done 24 hours a day, except during maintenance periods (generally at the start of the month.) Note that any in-game purchases you make will not be charged to your credit card until the start of the next billing cycle. Is there a free trial? Yes! Go here: http://finalfantasyxi.com/freetrial/ and sign up. You're able to play for free for 14 days. There are some major restrictions to trial players (check here. If you decide to keep playing and buy the Abyssea edition, it includes a free month of play. To join the Goon linkshell, post in the thread with your in-game name and contact any sackholder on the FFXIAH Linkshell page via /tells and someone will eventually get to you and hand you a pearl. If you play on the PS2/PS3 or Xbox 360, your registration codes and PlayOnline ID will work on the PC, and vice-versa. Even if you don't need the codes, I recommend buying the Ultimate Collection off Steam because it gives you an easy install/re-install method and a free month with a second account if you ever want to dual-box. PC players are recommended to use the Windower, a program initially designed to simply allow you to alt-tab out of the game but is now chock-full of other helpful plugins to make the game easier to play and more efficient. While Square has programmed an 'official' windowed mode, Windower is still leagues better because of plugins like Infobar (a mob databse that gives info about any mob you target) and Spellcast (a plugin that uses xml rules to swap your gear sets in and out as needed.) Please note that Windower is technically a 'third party program' and you can technically get banned for it, but unless you're shouting all through town about your Windower use nothing will happen to you. If you quit the game but are too weak-willed to stay away, read this If you need to re-activate your PlayOnline ID but you don't remember your ID/Password, call (858) 790-7529 between 12PM-9PM Eastern time and wait on hold for an hour for a customer service rep. They'll ask you for identifying info about the account, so if you know the old credit card number or any of the other old info they can probably get your ID and password back in your hands so you can resubscribe. You will need to sign up for a Square-Enix account/convert your old PlayOnline ID into one - Use the Square-Enix Account Management System accessible from the main FFXI website to register your IDs and create the account. It's free to do and everyone who plays needs to have one now. On the plus side, they no longer charge full price for partial months when you resubscribe - you are billed every 30 days instead of the start of each month. Just about any account can be re-activated as long as it wasn't banned, but Square makes no promises. Call them up with the info you have/remember (PlayOnline ID, credit card, email address you signed up with, anything you might have) and they'll do what they can to reactivate you. PlayOnline requires a Visa or MasterCard that works with Verified by Visa or MasterCard SecureCode. If yours doesn't work for whatever reason, call PlayOnline customer support at (858) 790-7529 and they will try to help you. Or put your card info in on a PS2 or X360 copy of the game. Returning Player FAQ Is it worth it to reactivate my account? Honestly, probably not. It all depends on what you did before you quit. Did you have multiple level 75 jobs, a ton of crafting levels, and most of the storyline missions done? Yeah, that's an account to reactivate. Did you quit at level 30 after two months because getting invites for the jungles was too tough? Probably best to re-roll and start over. Most of the early game things (Subjob, chocobo license, airship pass, and so on) are things high-level goons can walk you through to get you set back up. Also, soloing has been made a million times easier so getting your jobs back to your old levels won't take too much time. Also if you quit before buying some of the newer expansions (Treasures, Wings) you'll want to buy them anyway, so just get a fresh ID from the Steam collection and the free month instead. How has this game changed since I quit? A lot: read this: http://www.bg-wiki.com/bg/Returning_to_Vana%27diel - it explains most all of the changes from level 75 to 99 and some of the mechanics used now to level. Is SAGoons an endgame shell? Yes and no: the reality is there aren't really 'endgame' shells anymore at all. Most of what is done in-shell is done spur of the moment in small groups and almost all level 75 content can be soloed at level 99. Are parties hard to get? Yes and no. XPing is mostly done in alliances now, some (Gusgen, Crawler's Nest) are done abusing Level Sync to keep the party at a level where you can crush through mobs, others (Abyssea) are for higher level characters and lowbies who pay their way into leeching XP. Either way, solo XP is also super fast and you can go 1-30 on a job in a somewhat dedicated weekend by yourself by hunting Easy Prey mobs and using Fields/Grounds of Valor. NEW PLAYER LEVELING MILESTONES/WHAT THE gently caress DO I DO AT LEVEL X Level 1: Find the Tutorial NPC for your nation and begin the quests. If you bought the Ultimate Abyssea Edition, pick up your Destrier Beret from your local Festive Moogle. Level 10: Mini-Expansion cutscenes will begin. Ignore them for now. Level 18: Subjobs are now available through one of two quests. Your subjob caps at one half of your main job, to a maximum of 99MAIN/49SUB. Level 20: Chocobo's Wounds quest available in Jeuno, grants Chocobo License. Level 30: All 14 Extra Job quests are available (not all quests can be soloed at level 30, check wiki and ask for help if you need it!) Also, speak to Joachim in Port Jeuno to begin collecting stones for Abyssea. Level 40: Your first AF item quest is available. Level 50: Your first limit break quest: In Defiant Challenge. Your remaining AF quests can now begin. Level 55: Limit Break 2: Atop the Highest Mountains Level 60: LB3: Whence Blows the Wind Level 65: LB4: Riding on the Clouds Level 70: LB5: The Maat/etc fight. Level 75: LB6: New Worlds Await. Access to Trial of the Magians for weapons. Merit points unlocked. Speak to a Voidwatch Officer to begin storing stones for Voidwatch. Level 80: LB7: Expanding Horizons Level 85: LB8: Beyond the Stars. Empyrean armor now available to equip and upgrade through Trial of the Magians. Level 90: LB9: Dormant Powers Dislodged Level 95: LB10: Prelude to Puissance Level 96: Merited weapon skills unlocked. Level 99: Go back and solo all the level 75 and prior content you passed up to rush to 99. You can do a lot of stuff like Dynamis and Salvage and Assault before this but I wouldn't! Getting started Use the Wiki! Check the page for your starter nation and you'll get maps, NPC listings, quests, and points of interest. If you're starting a new character, you'll want to find the Tutorial NPC in your starter nation. They'll help you learn about food, Signet, Weapon Skills, Conquest Points, crafting, teleporting, and other basics. Doing the Tutorial quest line will get you to level 10-12. Make sure you find a Field Manual or Grounds Tome in whatever area you level in. These have pages that specify specific mobs to kill, and every time you kill those mobs you'll get bonus XP and occasionally gil and 'tabs' that can be used for buffs at the book and easy teleports back to your home point/home nation. If you have a choice, I prefer leveling in Grounds Tome areas because the page XP bonus gradually scales up to double the initial bonus as long as you remain in the zone (logging out is ok and does not reset the bonus.) Any race can start in any city, but certain races get an OK ring as a bonus for starting in that race's 'home' nation (Hume/Galka → Bastok, Taru/Mithra → Windurst, Elvaan → San d'Oria.) THINGS TO LOOK FORWARD TO IN 2013: Seekers of Adoulin will be coming out sometime in 2013. Here's what they've said is coming so far: - 2 new jobs. Geomancer (uses spheres of control to give buffs/debuffs and gets bonuses to nukes depending on which way they stand in relation to the enemy) and Rune Fencer (a supposed third tanking class that will focus on reducing magic damage taken.) - A new city on the western continent leading to a mostly unexplored 'wild' jungle area - New guilds that work to settle the wilderness - New instanced dungeons that aren't MMM part 2, they swear this time - Players will get their own ranch/farm to set up gathering/mining/fishing/mining for fish/animal raising/who the hell knows - "Play as a monster" system. No Jamiemadrox, you are the monsters. And then Jamie was a Sallow Seymour. Basically it looks like a new PvP system that nobody asked for and will be abandoned 3 months in unless the rewards are crazy. And more crap they haven't talked about yet so what are you waiting for, resubscribe and join the flood of goons! Try to make it to the expansion release before getting bored and quitting again! Wait, so, is this game good now? Because the last time I played, WotG had just come out and I quit when I realized that soloing my BST to 75 from 50 or 51 would take me at least 200 more hours of grinding by myself and decided I had better ways to waste my life.

I just bought the collection and am patching right now. Playing FF14 made me realize I really just want to give FFXI another go, but with more active people, so I'm rerolling.

I just want to note that the redemption code for this hat is having issues, and some (all?) people are unable to retrieve it. Who knows when it will actually be fixed. However, for all the newbs and returning people, there are Field Manuals in all the lowbie zones (all the zones period?) which more or less grant the same buffs as a the hat, so you still have some nice buffs (regen, refresh, re-raise, etc.) available to you to make leveling easier. If you win, and you ever think you might even remotely be interested in using a paladin, pick the Ochain because its the most annoying thing on that list to get upgraded to level 90. Everything else is a cakewalk, it just takes some time.

I chose a Mythic just because it's the most time consuming. Getting the ichor from Einherjar takes almost 3 months if you go every 3 days (assuming 3k per run), and gathering Alexandrite is currently a pain because no one does Salvage. Ochain is awesome though, it wouldn't be a bad choice by any means. Since the Odin screenshot was posted I will post this: ![]() Thanks everyone! Oh man I was just thinking about getting back into FFXI after reminiscing with some friends about it. Not sure if I should dive back down this rabbit hole. I played a Dark Knight but never got it higher then 60~, have they changed the job too much? I really enjoyed being able to just hit stuff and throw spells around. Maybe I'll get back into it in October. . . Is there much to do if you only want to play a little bit at a time, or is the game still require as much of a contiguous time dedication as it used to?

Will do! I think we'll do Rani last since several people want Epona's. We can just make an event of it and brew a poo poo ton back to back. We got 4 rings last time in about 3-4 hours work. It's not really hard, just the NMs required to pop Rani takes a while to kill and there is competition at times. I also need 39 more plates from one of his pop NMs, so it's partly a selfish endeavour. haha.

RazeChildren posted:Let's kick this new thread off right: This actually happened to me a few weeks ago too, curse my inventory troubles - everyone else in the group zoned out before I could throw stuff away to make room. And I main monk... ![]() That being said, if you're going to start or return, do your Gobbiebag quests in Jeuno, each of them grants you 5 more spaces in your portable inventory slots, and they're unlocked as you gain Jeuno reputation, which is raised by doing quests everyone. you want to prioritize this, as it's a long term infestment - the more room you have, the more space you have to gather stuff that'll make your life easier later on. There are also quests to increase your Mog Safe's space (you have this in every city, and when there's no actual space for it in a smaller town like Selbina or Khazam, there's are still moogles there that can let you access it), which if I recall correctly also depend on reputation on the city you're affiliated to. The wiki covers these, so be sure to check them here, as some have some weird trigger conditions: http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Mog_Safe In addition to that, associated to the mog house in your home city there's also Storage, which is affected by furniture placed in the layout of your Mog House - some if it is provided in seasonal events, some can be built (high high enough crafting levels) or bought (the most likely). There's probably an optimal furniture/space ratio, but I haven't bothered with it yet, and I like that some of my furniture pieces are reward from completing some mission lines, even if they only give 1 storage space - if I ever get enough room to re-distribute my stuff, I might change that. You also get another storage expansion, the Mog Locker, once you reach Aht Urghan and do one of the first missions, but you use that zone's specific currecy to access it, so use it for stuff you don't think you'll need to often - which also applies to your home city's Storage, since you can't access that in most places, especially not in Jeuno, which has become the game's hub again (it was Whitegate in Aht Urghan for a few years, but Abyssea changed that). Speaking of Jeuno, this is a recent development which would have been great years ago, but is still pretty handy now: http://www.ffxiah.com/shouts Basically it means that if you play in windowed mode and keep a browser open, you can be anywhere in the game's world doing whatever you want and never have to miss a shout for something that might interest you - while a lot more things are soloable nowadays, a group for some things can still be handy, so you can keep an eye on this to check if someone's got similar goals you haven't been prioritizing lately, letting you get some stuff done faster. I've recently returned to the game, so I was completely behind the Voidwalker stuff and thought I couldn't get a group for its early stages, yet this weekend thanks to this I managed to find groups for the Aht Urghan, Windurst and San d'Oria paths. Other stuff worth taking into account if starting out: - if you have no particular preference for the city to start in, Windurst's nation missions let you access a key item that lets you access a specific area of the Horutoto Ruins dungeon, after you get some help to access that particular area for the first time - Galka can eat raw meat (occasional drop type from several creatures) and Mithra can eat raw fish (from fishing) - other than stat differences, these are the closest to major differences from playing any given race; one specific dungeon, Quicksand Caves, usually required a race-dependent party amount unless you played Galka, but now there's a quest that makes that factor irrelevant - I don't see these things being mentioned nearly often enough - when you're starting out, try to take 2 different-yet-related jobs (2 melee or 2 magic jobs) to 10 or so before leaving the starting area, so that you'll have a subjob ready when you can actually access the subjob quest - be sure to look into the Adventuring Fellow quests if you expect to solo a bit outdoors or in most dungeons - you basically get to use an NPC to help you in fights whom will start out at level 30 and level as it fights strong enough mobs - you can't use it in specific battle arenas where several mission and some quest fights are done though. This being a Final Fantasy game, if you're interested in it you might care about stories, and those are mostly experienced in the major mission lines, although several of them have connecting points to some quest lines (the difference being that missions tend to be part of longer lines and are usually associated with a city or expansion, while quests can be one-shots, or might have a short sequence of their own, either related to getting certain items or relatively independent - although a reward item is still likely). You can get a glipse of the game's world and characters and pre-WotG story here. Every starting nation has a mission line of its own, and you can change nation at any time, but it's best to only bother once you've completed the whole set, since there are bonuses for persisting, namely, gil rewards and longer Signet duration - I'd cover Signet, Sanction and Sigil, but they're annoying and I already covered a lot of other things, wiki time - not to mention outpost teleports (very handy, wiki those and supply runs too). You can practically start these missions at level 1 or so, and they keep scaling up, but you can probably solo the end at the new level cap. They're still the easiest to find a group for, since you can search by nation rank. After you reach rank 6 or so in your nation (IIRC, rank 4 or 5 lets you access city airships, also handy to have), you can access the Zilart missions, which start once you reach Norg (that requires a separate airship access, to Kazham, and travelling through a jungle where you'll probably get lost, take a chocobo to get lost at a faster pace,at least) after that particular landmark. You can probably solo the rank 6 nation boss (same for all nations) at level 80 or higher to start this, but at this point I don't know how much of this particular mission line can be soloed. People usually do it for Sky access, and you might still need a party to beat Divine Might, a quest that can replace one of the missions to get you an earring that's nice for some jobs, but that's after Sky access. Nowadays, reaching its final boss must be more annoying than actually beating him with 2 or 3 people. You start the Promathia missions the moment you set foot in Delkfutt's Tower for the first time, which shouldn't happen before you're 20 or so - that's in a spot that was a popular levelling area for the 20-25 range, but it likely won't happen by accident nowadays like it did to me. These missions were designed to be done as you level from your 30s upward, and back then were level-capped so that low-level players might actually get some high-level help instead of high levels just tearing through everything or only grouping with high-levels, but with the game's age that rationale no longer applies, so the caps are off. Advancing through these will grant you access to several areas, mostly in the Tavnazian archipelago (an area that's visible in the game's intro), and later on in an area players call sea, which will be more understandable when you set foot on it. There's also a nice ring as a reward when you're done, and finishing both this and Zilart lets you access a few more quests that tie both stories together and get you a nice earring for your troubles. Treasures of Aht Urghan lets you access a completely new continent with rules of its own - here Signet doesn't apply - Sanction does instead, with different effects - and Naja Salaheem with own your soul if you want to progress, and there's nothing you can do about it. There's a mini-quest in each of the starting cities that makes it easier to teleport to this new area, it basically involves talking to a several specific NPCs. For your troubles you get some amusing plot moments, access to a few game activities like Assault and Besieged (everyone can fight anything that attacks a certain part of the city, chaotic fun for all), and at the end a nice ring. I'm not doen with Wings of the Goddess yet, but it lets you access some new zones, most recycled, and a battle system that lets you get quick exp and handy teleports if you make sure to access all the Cavernous Maws. Here Sigil applies, also with rules of its own. I think the end reward's customizeable stat-wise. Then there's the 3 mini-expansions, the quality of which is quite different (some fun moments in the moogle and Shantotto ones, at least, annoying bits in all of them), and the end reward for each involves customizeable gear, other than their cutscenes, specific boss fights, some drops in given areas and their rewards (apart from the final ends, there are some smaller rewards for completing early section, which in some cases can be repeated), they don't really add much to the game. Then there's Abyssea, which was a game changer since with its new area came a new way to level, to handle NMs and their drops, a way to boost your abilities in its specific, new gear, and something of a plot with a common point to Chains of Promathia if you beat enough bosses there, though that's probably not why people do it. Voidwatch isn't an expansion, but it seems to be dominating the game now, feeling like Abyssea outside abyssea, as far as NMs are concerned, and also with a plot of its own which I'm yet to see for myself. I hope this helps - half of it would have been helpful to know when I started, at least.

South Town guy posted:In addition to that, associated to the mog house in your home city there's also Storage, which is affected by furniture placed in the layout of your Mog House - some if it is provided in seasonal events, some can be built (high high enough crafting levels) or bought (the most likely). There's probably an optimal furniture/space ratio, but I haven't bothered with it yet, and I like that some of my furniture pieces are reward from completing some mission lines, even if they only give 1 storage space - if I ever get enough room to re-distribute my stuff, I might change that. If you get some extra gil, stock up on Bahuts, they're 4x1, give 8 storage, you can put objects on top of them like a table, and they're often not as prohibitively expensive as some of the larger furnishings. There's also Mannequins, but good luck assembling one of those, these days. Eight-Six fucked around with this message at Jul 10, 2012 around 17:36 |

It took me ages, but I eventually managed to find enough parts in Jeuno bazaars. I think you can get some of the parts in a weekly BCNM against a mammet in Monarch Linn, and since the level cap from Riverne was removed, it's now possible to get there solo to give it a try, at least. Edit: I recent found that there's an official version of the Jeuno music that's basically in-universe church/gospel/soul music, lyrics included. I'm still amazed this exists and can't help but think how nerdily heretic it would be to actually play that in a church - remove the explicit altana mention and it could totally pass. A friend of mine loaded up on Commodes once. They're not as economical as Bahuts, but having a house full of toilets is pretty goofy.

That was a lot to take in, but there was a bunch of useful info. Thanks for posting! Right now I'm still farting around my starting city (Bastok), doing missions. I think I'm level 14 or something. At what point should I be going to Jeuno? Do you still have to run there? I think I remember that being a big deal. edit: You can probably tell how overwhelmed I am at the moment by the tone of this post. In the past you would go to Jeuno at 19 or 20. Now a days I would probably not bother till 30 unless you really want a Chocobo. You can level to 30 quite easily in Gusgen Mines. Anytime after 18 is ok though, if you can hazard the run!

You want to go to Jeuno by 20. At level 20 you can start the Chocobo license quest.<-- e;fb For those of you that are getting to a point where you want to raise reputation up, check out the following link. (Reputation is needed for quite a bit of things) Quick reputation guide: http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Quick_Reputation You'll want to get your Jeuno fame leveled up as a priority. Fortunately, the reputation system is somewhat forgiving in that You can do one quest and level Bastok/Sandoria/Jeuno fame all at once. There are two main quests to focus on.. "Only the Best" in Selbina for Bastok/Sandy/Jeuno, and "Mandragora-Mad" in Windurst Walls for Windurst. Also, if you ever plan on playing a melee job you'll want to get Ninja sub-job. This means you'll want Utsusemi: Ichi, and this requires Norg fame. The best quest for Norg fame is either "Mihgo's Amigo" in Windurst Woods, or "Shady Business" in Bastok. Shady Business is the best of the two because it only takes 109 zinc ore, vs. 200-300 yagudo necklaces for Mihgo's Amigo.

So much for our Odin runs ![]() ""Dev posted:As for participants being able to join the user reserving either Odin's Chambers without one feather from each wing, or the "Elite Einherjar" title for Odin's Chamber II, these are confirmed bugs that will be fixed in the next upcoming patch.

Man that's sad to see ![]() I guess it makes sense. Being able to get body abjurations every 3 days does feel off when you think about it. A bummer regardless.

Of course. Because right now it's useful since we can only do Odin roughly two or three times a month with current Einherjar entry rules otherwise. What a goddamn pain. Shaezerus fucked around with this message at Jul 10, 2012 around 19:47 |

Reading the whole list of what's changed since I quit some time after WotG's launch has me pretty interested. A lot of the stuff that used to really annoy me has been changed.

I'm looking forward to doing a bunch of the stuff that seemed mysterious and unattainable (to lazy people like me) when the game was new. Like... maybe I'll unlock an advanced job this time.
