A few things.

I wish my car was clean. You can see the dirty windows.
I wish I had more flashes. I wonder what this would look like all lit up.

Car photography is one of my main interests as far as subject matter goes. I've been taking photos at Goodwood Festival of Speed for the last few years with my little compact Fuji so I'm ridiculously excited to be able to take my new Nikon next year and see what it can do.
Other than that, I regularly try to get to events and meets and take what I can, so here's a few of my better ones.

Some really nice shots above! @clown that abandoned petrol station is a great location!

Good news! In the last few weeks I have got my first properly published photos in a car magazine and I will share the scanned images of that with you ASAP. In the meantime... Couple of random shots from Sunday. I definitely feel I've found my groove in recent months, I only really find myself shooting at two very opposite fixed lengths and shutter speeds; that is fast and long of wide and slow. I've found that after using a lot of post-pro a while ago, I'm over that and my main objectives now are to shoot well-exposed technically decent images with strong composition and clean backgrounds. I really want to do more planned shoots rather than just shooting stuff that happens to be out and about on a particular day.

200mm is my favourite focal length for capturing cars frozen in action shooting at around 1/500-1/800 sec usually gets the job done. It helps to have something in the shot that lets the viewer know the car is in motion, i.e. water splashes, drive sawing away at the wheel or some leaf litter blowing up in the air. Unfortunate;y, the rain had dried up by the time I took this and the leaves had all blown off to the side of the road. Still, I like the composition (the car angled across the frame to bring the picture together and give it a bit of energy) and strong colour of the orange against the green foliage.

McLaren MP4-12C by Rupert Procter, on Flickr

I have been trying to get as low as possible for many of these tele shots. I think it produces an angle that you don't usually see these cars from as well as making the background clean as you can't see the road behind the car. It also gives a bit of immediacy to the subject. After taking this 993 I realised how much the 959 influenced it's design.

zz_JH15353 by Rupert Procter, on Flickr

Another low down shot at 200mm, the head lights curves of the road and driver give the shot a bit of energy that is otherwise lost with a fast shutter speed.

Sunday Morning Drive: Ferrari F430 by Rupert Procter, on Flickr

I'm really pleased with the clarity and balanced exposure in this shot as well as the water being kicked up to add a bit of drama. Also, it's not a car you'd expect to see in the countryside around here, they're usually in the financial district. Good to see this British Bulldog getting the drive it deserves.

Bentley Continental R by Rupert Procter, on Flickr

This is definitely my favoured type of backdrop for the countryside shots. I do my best to find a hill or rise with a foliage backdrop quite far away from the subject and then try and snap the car as it crests the hill.

Sunday Morning Drive: Lotus Elise by Rupert Procter, on Flickr

With these I was trying to get some foliage in the immediate foreground for a more candid feel and also to act as some natural vignetting that focuses the eyes on the subject and brings out the sharpness. It was difficult find a balance between not having the foliage overlap the subject too much and get low enough to have a thin a piece of road as possible.

BMW 6-Series by Rupert Procter, on Flickr

BMW 3-Series Estate by Rupert Procter, on Flickr

Hope you don't think I was waffling a lot of nonsense there. I think it really helps to reflect on why you think a photo works or doesn't work and then go on from there.
