Show GSDs have more problems than just their legs, unfortunately. But yeah, you can get some pretty wonderful (INTENSE) GSDs if you look at dogs from working lines. Here's a breeder we like to drool over in PI on a few of the different varieties within the breed: http://wildhauskennels.com/gsdtypes.htm Pugs... there's no hope for pugs. (That's not true... I know a couple accomplished little pugs, but they had to undergo surgery to remove excess skin from inside their cranial cavities and be given real nostrils so they could function like a normal dog.)

There is supposed to be a much lesser chance of hip dysplasia in the european bloodline vs north american (classic looking german shepherd) although I don't know the statistics or anything.
