Why didn't you post the one with the cow corpse? That's sort of relaxing. Especially when the skull pops out of the head skin.

Edit: Well poo poo, I guess it got removed from Youtube. The best version was the one where cow noises were added by a goon and PETA found it. Oh well, something about grinding meat just makes me tingle.

It really is pretty easy to understand which is which.

Frisson is a "shudder of emotion", a sort of chill some people can feel listening to songs, particularly inspiring speeches, or being surprised by a movie's plot twist. The Sixth Sense's main twist probably induced Frisson in millions of watchers.

ASMR (yes it's a dumb name) or however you want to call it is a very relaxed state that has nothing to do with awe inspiring moments or powerful emotions. Generally the back of your head feels warm, chills run down your spine, and you have this very pleasant tingling sensation for minutes on end. You could say that you feel slightly hypnotized by what you're seeing/listening to. As a rule, pattern-based speech and repeating sounds can easily trigger it, but only at low decibel levels.

Again, it's a beautiful sensation that has no link whatsoever to sexual arousal, but some ASMR videos are so weird that the term fetish is honestly not that inappropriate. Note that you don't need weirdness to induce the feeling, see Bob Ross and his status as the ASMR Pope. I remember an episode of The Joy of Painting where he said that people would write him letters describing how relaxed/happy/sleepy they felt watching his show. Tingles, I say.

What.

I've never experienced any kind of brain tingles beyond brain freezes and really liking how the letter "A" sounds when I'm stoned (apple! animal! manchild!). It seems like everyone else knows what you're talking about though. I have basically no reference for any of this. Is it physical, like when you get goosebumps? Or is it like having an orgasm without the actual physical orgasm part? Most importantly, am I missing out?

It's chi nonsense though? Goddamn. I mean, I knew ASMR was a bullshit term - it's a fake made-up science-y sounding name people gave it in an attempt to legitimize it. I only call it that for lack of a better term, and because it's so widely used now that people know what you mean. Or at least, people on the internet, because you can bet money I've never said a goddamn thing in public about this. It doesn't matter how much you insist it's not sexual, people are just going to think it's weird to watch youtube videos of people whispering to get 'brain tingles'. And they're probably right.

I tell you what though, I put on some headphones and this poo poo is relaaaaxing

You are, big time. But I'm not sure you can be "trained to feel it" (boy this is starting to sound wrong).

You get goosebumps, yes, but also a warm, tingling feeling in the back of your head. It's hard to find a suitable example, but a good one would probably be the feeling you get when you go to bed after a hard day (especially when it's cold outside). The moment you get under the blanket you might feel goosebumps, a sense of relaxation, maybe even a tingling in the back of your head. For some, the feeling is strong enough to make them smile a bit.

Now take that sensation, multiply it by 10, make it reproducible whenever you want (provided you're relaxed and have the right triggers on hand) and you get ASMR.

I get like a shivering tingle up and down my spine when I watch someone do a task; like when I was a kid in first grade struggling with some art project and the girl next to me said "watch, like this" and did a bit of it for me. Similar situations always kick it off for me. It's almost like an orgasm but it's not sexual.

I get similar tingles listening to important speeches and stuff like that.

Wrong, that guy's totally allowed in the Tingle Clubhouse. Don't be jealous

One of the things I love most about the unintentional ASMR videos posted on reddit is that, even if they don't work for you, they're likely to be a) interesting and educational or b) absolutely batshit insane. Recently one was posted that definitely falls into the latter category: a man who believes he is the messiah talking about how the world is concave and we live inside it, and we can only see the stars at night because there is a ceiling made of ice in the sky. And he apparently once got arrested for death threats against Obama. RELAXING!

This is ASMR. You should probably be able to recreate the sensation by watching Bob Ross, or instructional videos on how to do poo poo.

This is probably Frisson, because it depends on powerful emotions, a sense of awe, etc.

Also I'd complain about mods making GBS threads up the thread (OH GOD WHO DO I REPORT THIS TO) but some of the poo poo posts are pretty hilarious. I suppose Reddit is always behind the corner in an ASMR thread, especially when you take it more seriously than you should.

It's nothing whatsoever like an orgasm. It's physical in the sense that you "feel" it in the same way you feel warm and fuzzy on an opiate, and not in the way you "feel" an emotion. But the physical sensations are (almost) certainly psychosomatic. It's a psychological response, not a real physical one.

It's like the feeling of extreme contentment. Less like an orgasm, and more like the afterglow of one. That post-coital moment when you're comfy in bed and feel all is right with the world.

I don't really care how people feel about it or believe it or think it's psychosomatic or whatever, I just want people to keep posting videos. The only reason the frisson thing is even an issue is because it always derails poo poo, and jesus I think we've done it 2-3 times a page for the whole thread. Read before posting you idiots, read.
