So my wife 'Queen Elizatits' had posted a small story in PYF's 'The General Feel Good Thread' of an unexpected adventure we had on the 13th of July, & several folks there said we should post a PI thread about it because of the nature of it & also so we could have a place to post regular updates of our new family members progress. So here is the long story. We live in the Mojave desert near Edwards Air Force Base where I am stationed, & we luckily were able to purchase a pair of tickets to San Diego Comic Con for this year. It's about a 5 hour drive, so we left at 3 in the morning to get to the convention hall in time to pick up badges and have a good time walking around enjoying the day. Comic Con was amazing, we spent around 6 hours walking through the exhibition hall and walking around taking photos of some of the amazing costumes that were there. We had originally planned on staying all day but were exhausted from the drive & from walking around so at about 1:00pm we decided it was best if we go ahead and head home. As we were walking to the parking garage I received a text from my friend who had agreed to let our dogs out that someone had an accident in the house and there was diarrhea all through out the main hallway. So we begrudgingly begin driving home, the entire way making jokes about the situation and trying to vent our anger to hopefully lessen the severity of it when we were approached with the sea of turds face to face. We started taking I-5 home through LA, but outside of Orange County the traffic started backing up, I decided to try and go around it by heading east and taking I-15 towards Barstow. The next few hours were quiet, but QE & I had started previously been talking about possibly adopting a kitten, and I said in the car "I don't think we need to be talking about bringing more pets into the house" out of the frustration of the situation. We were about 75 miles from the house when TIME SLOWED DOWN, we had exited off I-15, and were taking Highway 138 The Pear Blossom Highway when we saw it, in the opposite lane we saw a pickup truck pulled over and then we see one of the worst things a small puppy run into traffic and get hit by a car. Then we see the second thing the mother dog running after him. I locked up and pulled over onto the side of the road, then we both sprinted between traffic to see what we could do to help. The woman who had stopped was elderly and was trying to control the mother but they both we becoming hysterical. The puppy had drug itself under he parked car and was screaming, and the mother was frantically attempting to pull the puppy out from under the truck. QE grabbed the mother and pulled her over into the dirt and then I crawled under the vehicle and carefully pulled the puppy out, avoiding him from touching any of the exhaust components of the vehicle. Now I don't in any way consider myself a tough guy, but after 12 years in the military and being in situations from one of the initial groups of aircraft into Afghanistan, the invasion of Iraq, and humanitarian efforts in Africa I assume I can handle most stressful situations with sound judgement and the ability to keep my composure. When I got the puppy in my arms after pulling out from under the truck I almost lost it. He would go from blood curdling screeching and kicking to limp and unconscious within seconds of each other. He had small places of road rash on his small body, he had blood pouring from his mouth, and the rear end in a top hat who had hit them didn't even attempt to pull over or slow down. We got the number of a local vet's office from the woman who had pulled over & then with me carrying the puppy & QE carrying the mother played frogger through traffic once again. Here is an idea of the highway we had to cross to get to them ![]() We contacted the vet's office and they were still open for regular business, so we frantically drove there, and got the puppy in to see the doctor. He began to look him over and miraculously he had no apparent or compound fractures, no internal bleeding or damage, & no dislocations. From the force of the impact it caused him to bite his own tongue and gums, and knocked a few teeth out. He had a mild concussion, had went into slight shock, & was dehydrated so they proceeded to give him an IV to help his fluids levels, & then a shot of pain medicine to help with the rest of the night. The vet's office was a group of the nicest people, the vet waived the fee for the exam and his time and just asked if we were able to pay for the medicine & IV which we gladly did. He also gave the mother an exam, and gave her a clean bill of health, minus that she was extremely malnourished and dehydrated also. After a few hours, and the vet gave the puppy an ok to leave so we loaded everyone up and then started on our journey home. On our way home we started to think what should we name this little guy, and we decided on Moses. A small baby rescued from a situation he couldn't handle in the desert. QE & I thought it was sort of fitting. It's been 2 days now and Mother & puppy are doing well. We've treated them for fleas, gave the mother a bath, and de-wormed both of them. We are slowly feeding them over and over to help with their malnutrition, and dehydration. Moses is slowly getting his energy back and is the sweetest puppy, he has small burst of excitement and can now easily put weight on 3 of his legs, with only his front right still hurting (But he still uses it when chasing a ball.) He's been sleeping a lot from the stress and recovery but we've been keeping a good eye on our new little guy. QE's mother has already said she wants to adopt the mother and wants us to name her Magdalene. So I'm sure everyone wants to see pictures so here they are! Moses sleeping his first night at home ![]() Magdalene on the first night ![]() After breakfast on the second day, he was so sore he couldn't walk so he decided to roll everywhere. ![]() More 'Roll' playing. ![]() Magdalene chilling in Moses's crate. ![]() Magdalene right before her bath on the second night ![]() Last feeding of the second night, we removed his IV catheter right after this. ![]() ![]() BIGGGGGGG stretches before breakfast on the third day ![]() Right after breakfast, notice the mess from several bowl flips ![]() ![]() Magdalene with her raw hide bone ![]() GIVE ME ![]() Sunday afternoon napping ![]() Our dog KingKing (Who has a little bit of doggie downs, and even at 16 years old thinks he is a puppy) & Moses hanging out.

Man, I'm veering all over the place between "AUGH PUPPY" and "oh thank goodness, you guys are really great" and "wow, the mom is a really good-looking dog, especially for one found on the road." I'm assuming there wasn't any sign of other puppies nearby? Not that you were in a position to make a lengthy search, obviously.

The woman who had stopped originally came to the vet's office a few hours later, & told us she had walked around and searched the area for more puppies and couldn't find any. The vet said in that area is popular to breed your dog, sell the puppies & keep the biggest male to breed with mom again, so he assumed they had escaped from a similar situation.

That's fantastic that you did all that for Moses! There needs to be more people like you and your wife ![]() From the looks of his paws, it seems like he'll be a big boy. I love German shepherds, and I particularly love his ridiculous puppy ears

You and your wife are incredible, amazing people. What lucky dogs. Yeah, my bf now slows the car down and pulls over whenever we see a stray dog. Though, I am thankful that I haven't caught one because I would REALLY want to keep it

MikeJF posted:What does the mother think of you guys? She is very trusting of us handling Moses & is a real sweetheart herself. She is quiet, and seems fairly clever. We've been trying commands in English & then Spanish and she has responded to Sientate (Sit), so we assume someone at some point has attempted to train her. She is very skittish however towards corrections, just us saying no causes her to slink off and hide for while, so we assume the last people she was around were more than likely abusive with her. But all in all she is a lovely dog, who has great instinctual manners for living indoors, when she obviously had been an outside dog for a very long time. Also thank you to everyone for all the kind things you've said. We feel like we did what we would expect anyone else to do in the situation, and the real hero is the woman who had stopped initially to handle a situation that was obviously out of her control. Day 3 has went well, we've had to wake puppy up several times to stretch, exercise, use the bathroom and then to finally eat a big dinner. We have large 6' stone fences in the back yards of our neighborhood and Moses was surprisingly brave today when our neighbor who is a K-9 dog handler for the local police dept Belgian Malinois Buzz decided to start jumping to look over the fence. Moses took all his energy and jumped up and barked back, it was a small thing but it was so good to see him acting like a puppy. Here is an earlier video of Buzz jumping to peek over the fence. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwhS8Uba6V0 Here are some more pictures of Moses from after dinner tonight. What a wonderful story! Reading these from-abandoned/stray-to-pet success stories on PI makes me want to get a pet as well (and keep it illegally because pets aren't allowed in student apartments One thing, though: ...how bad was the diarrhea problem? Did you handle that a-ok?

Hi everyone! ASSHAT(S) is sleeping but I've been up with the pupster so I thought I would poke my head in here. About the diarrhea my husband was nice and left out the part that it was totally my fault. The dogs usually eat first thing in the morning but the day before comic con I fed them in the morning and again that night because I didn't think they would eat at 2am. So that obviously upset someone's stomach. It wasn't like parvo levels pure liquid poop it was a big mostly solid poop and small amounts of runny. Dog is fine now. About other critters, just dogs. We are a blended dog family, when we met I had the old dog KingKing. KingKing is a whole story with sad beginnings himself. When I was a teen I volunteered at an animal shelter and someone brought him in when he was 3-4 weeks old they had found him in a ditch. He was very sick and since he couldn't be vacinnated and the shelter had coronavirus going through it he was going to be put down. I ended up 'fostering' him and have had him ever since. I adore KingKing but he obviously has dog brain problems. Not a mean bone in his body but he doesn't understand a lot of things. ![]() And this dog! She is almost nine her name is Gretchen. I have a degenerative eye condition and also brain issues and Gretchen helps me. If you ever pop over to the fitness log cabin here I have a thread and a lot of the first part is pretty much about her rather than any kind of fitness ![]() She is an outstanding dog, I don't know what I would do without her. Probably lost in the desert somewhere We also occasionally look after dogs for other folks in the military when they go away. Unfortunately pet abandonment is a big problem in the military, well it's a big problem everywhere, but here a lot of the times it just because the owners can't find anyone to look after their pets even for shorts periods. This is totally off topic but if anyone reading this happens to live near a military base many of them look for volunteers who are willing to look after pets when their owners go on deployments or TDYs. You would be be saving the animals life in many cases and helping a service member tremendously. Funnily enough we volunteered to watch a german shepherd at the end of this month. I guess we must like shepherds

Dogen posted:This is amazing. You both are amazing. Moses is especially amazing. Haha I remember that. We've never looked after a cat, the worst we ever had was a great dane with no manners at all. But if it is something you are interested in I have certainly seen lots of people looking for cat help. If you are interested check out http://www.operationnoblefoster.org/ or https://www.netpets.org/militarypet/foster.php or just your local craigslist. A lot of the time the military member isn't aware of organizations that will help with this, they aren't widely advertised, and they will try and set up the temporary foster care on their own.

You know housing was actually busting people looking after their friends' pets while they were TDY and deployed and on vacation off island while I was in Okinawa? "You can't run a business" they said. So people stopped paying them for sitting their dogs and just gave them gift money afterward instead. So if anyone who wants to do this is in base housing (or anyone else looking into this) y'might wanna check and see if they require you to have a bunch of stupid permits to watch your buddy's dog. I heard about it before they found out about me sitting dogs at home and just started doing in-their-home sitting instead. Of course, all this depends on just how strict the base is so ymmv. That said, if you decide to do this, the bookoo and yardsales sites are heavily military and will probably help anyone who wants to sit, find folks to sit for. Obviously the housing stuff doesn't matter if you're a civilian family or if you live off-base. Oh, and you guys are awesome.
