Spritually, Petitcom is the reincarnation of mid-80s Japanese PCs such as the MSX and PC-6001. Technically, however, the machine provides a number of luxuries not enjoyed by actual 80s programmers and is closer in power to early 16-bit PCs/consoles. What does this mean for you? As a user: a shitload of bootleg NES and 80s computer games. As a developer: a fairly reasonable environment in which to make bootleg NES and 80s computer games. Included are about 20 sample programs, games, and editing tools (all with source), a comprehensive manual, and a text-editor that works about as well as you'd expect a DS-based text-editor to. Useful in a pinch, but check out PTCUtilities for a slightly friendlier alternative. Petit Computer programs are shared primarily via (dozens of) QR codes. To generate a QR code of your game, export your files to the SD card through the file management menu and use either the online QR code converter or PTCUtilities. Be sure to post your ![]()

Bought this even though I haven't messed with BASIC since I was a kid. It's fun re-learning all this stuff and makin' dumb poo poo. Maybe soon I'll remember how to make stuff good enough to actually show!

Why is Outrun labeled as "driving game"? This looks pretty cool. Any idea if any C-64 remakes are happening? Zoids, Nemesis the Warlock and Airborne Ranger need to live again.

Gamebridge is a European publisher, right? I'd be shocked if they don't eventually get it out in PAL. Also, looks like they disabled the voice synth in the English version. TALK command is still there for compatibility purposes, but it doesn't actually produce any sound

Yeah, they had copyright issues with the voice synthesiser so they had to cut it from the international release. There's a Japanese wiki with a ton of games here, in case anyone feels like trawling through it.

Face Melter posted:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjGXULXctqw Here's the larger problem, though: The first release of Petitcom didn't actually have a way to share programs beyond manually transcribing the source. PetitcomMk2, the version that we're using, only came out in Japan about 4 months ago. So almost any program you see dated before March 2012 probably does not exist in a downloadable format, unless the author took the effort to buy mk2, convert their mk1 files, and then export a bunch of QRs.

On a barely related note, I feel dumb asking this but is there a way to type in capital letters in the PTCUtilities program editor?

So were they not able to do voice synthesis in time? I can't find documentation on TALK, TALKCHK() or TALKSTOP. It's on the alphabetical list of commands online, but not on the one in the in-game manual, even though voice synthesis is mentioned. And TALK "test" doesn't seem to do anything. I got all excited ![]() Also, the manual: holy poo poo who translated that. Some parts are alright but some are... "Label Character String - Charactor strings model variable containing the lavel name which starts with @ mark." (I figured out what this meant eventually...it's talking about labels for GOTOs.) EDIT: Yep, under the Sound tables online there's information about TALK, but it's not there in-game, yet voice synthesis is mentioned in the manual and the TALK commands still show up on the command guide. They just don't do anything. ![]() Color Printer fucked around with this message at Jul 20, 2012 around 02:09 |

[quote="homeless snail" post="405756687"] [*]The developer of Quest has a handful of other bootlegs on his site Anyone have any luck reading the QR codes here? That Wiki site is fine, but maybe it's the pink background or something but I can't get any of the games to read.

I've gotten programs from both the wiki and the quest guy's site working fine. What I do is zoom in on the sites pretty large, and make sure my hands are steady and even the 32 code programs seem to go pretty quick. Unfortunately, I don't have many good recommendations. So far the RUNAWAY game from the wiki has been the most fun. That Quest game, though, I don't know what sort of projection the guy is using for the 3D effects, but it makes it near impossible to navigate the maze.

I can't play it for poo poo, but it feels the most like a polished game.

Horror Dungeon is certainly the most professional game I've tried so far. Both in terms of presentation and in controls. Trek, if you haven't tried it, is pretty amazing. Mostly in presentation. I do wonder why they decided to use the E and K designations instead of making a font set or using the little pictures of aliens and such that the font already provides. I may just hack it myself to do that, actually...

The wiki has a pretty good Wizardry clone, but even though you can create characters and walk around in the dungeon-- it's completely unfinished. There are no encounters and you can't equip the party. Too bad, too, because it looks pretty much exactly as I remember.

Cave flyers are Way Cool. So I made one. Unfortunately mine turned out decidedly less than Way Cool. I ran into some limitations with GRP's fill rate that really constrained how quickly I could scroll the screen. Turns out its best to think of GRP as a vector layer rather than bitmap.

Through the first semblance of an English Petitcom community, I found this awesome thing:![]() Its a very Korgy kind of synthesizer that gives you full access to all the sounds you can make in MML. Has a KAOSS pad and everything. Unfortunately it doesn't look like it has a sequencer, but that's fine by me because I'm like half finished writing a MML tracker anyway. Thing is like 60 QRs long, but its a fun little toy to play around with.
