GAMERTAGS AND PSNS - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...ZNR2hSY0E#gid=0

--------------

So the FIFA 13 information embargo has been lifted today. A bunch of press people got to play it a few days ago and have started releasing information.

The best source to keep your eye on, as usual, is FIFA Soccer Blog. Currently they've posted:

Career Mode - The New Features
Career Mode - Preview
Skill Games Preview
Xaor’s Corner: FIFA 13 Impressions

Other Articles:

ComputerAndVideoGames.com First Look
Eurogamer - The referee is a wanker

I'll update this as more info comes in.

So, summarised new features:

Engine Updates

Attacking AI - Players now curve their runs to stay onside, don't go towards dead ends, move into space and think one-or-two moves ahead.

Defensive AI & Balance - They hold the line better and close up holes more aggressively to counter the attacking AI changes.

First Touch Control - Probably the biggest improvement. Most players won't Ronaldinho it down to a full stop from an awkward ball. There'll be varying degrees of error resulting in way more permutations of retrieving a ball, as well as trying to be more careful when you're in control of it. This will end up affecting defenders the most.

Complete Dribbling - It's essentially a reworking of 12's LT+RT skilled dribbling, which over the years has devolved into a side-stepping animation. Apparently it activates in certain contexts and feels really intuitive, and allows you to approach 1-on-1s with much more freedom to skin a player.

Precision Dribbling 2.0 - They're taking the FIFA Street dribbling system and applying it to FIFA, without being ridiculous about it. In the last game it was pretty slow, but this is all about quick and precise dragbacks and sidesteps, allowing you to face one direction and move the ball around quickly and accurately in order to confound incoming tacklers.

Impact Engine - They've cleaned up the ridiculous glitches from 12 and made Push and Pull useful. It actually slows or stops players. You can also do much more shielding and barging off the ball.

Tactical Freekicks - Ability to create different types of FKs with the 3 different takers. Add/remove to your wall, encroach on the freekick, etc.

Tactical Defending - Instead of just holding contain and defending with great success, you now have to input the lateral decision of the player, or else you'll get dicked. It's an improvement because the previous contain required no skill.

Slide Tackling - In FIFA12 slide tackling is basically aiming and your leg goes in that direction, with no guidance. In this game, there is some guidance so you don't jump over the thing or completely miss.

Skill Games

Instead of running around the arena when you load games, you now do mini challenges such as Penalties, Ground Passing, Lobbed Passing, Dribbling, Shooting, Advanced Shooting, Crossing and Free Kick. You can get Gold, Silver and Bronze for each. The purpose is to beat your friends on the leaderboards.

Career Mode

International Management - You can coach a national side whilst controlling a club.

In Match Live Score Updates - Geoff Shreeves will butt into your games and tell you about others.

Player Stories - Way more player twattage when you make wrong decisions.

Be a player - More objective based, ability to get transferred, loaned or stuck on the bench for playing bad.

Classified Results - Basically BBC Live Score.

Manager's Office - You show up on the touchline as a character, and there's a Jobs Board.

Transfer Negotiations - More options. Getting closer to FM.

quote:

And then there's the swearing. In the main presentation EA is at pains to point out that you won't get carded for calling the ref a c***. I discover later that this was the original plan, but it didn't make sense in the context of a match: how would the ref choose which player to caution?

Instead, Kinect listens for expletives at key moments, e.g. just after a foul, and keeps a count. Hit the limit for the ref (it varies) and he'll become more strict against your side, or more lenient towards the opposition. If you're a manager, it will also be worked into the post-match narrative, the board questioning your temperament, and even sacking you if you mouth-off too much.

EA isn't saying which words will register - "we can't put it in the manual - that would get us in a lot of trouble," I'm told - but, interestingly, all phrases will be localised, even within the English-speaking world, with variations for Scotland, Ireland and so on, all the way from "wanker" to "welly it!" Against all expectations, then, it looks like Kinect may have a useful role to play in FIFA.

I can see me getting addicted to the Skill Games. 'In the bin' will be a good thing, for once.

Everything looks good so far. I can see the one-touch addition being frustrating for those who use lower league teams, though. Loving the Kinect additions.

The features go deeper anyway

quote:

It's hardly unusual to hear people bellowing "f*** you!" and "sh*t!" at the telly while playing FIFA. The difference this time is the game's listening.

Kinect comes to EA's football giant this year and, wisely opting not to shoehorn in any clumsy motion-control support, the team has focused instead on talking a good game. And it's had a bit of fun in the process, turning our frustrated effing and blinding into a gameplay feature.
3

Internationals come to Career Mode in FIFA 13, allowing you to proudly represent your nation instead of pretending to care about the embarrassing Team GB Olympics farce.

"Whenever we add something to the game we want it to be game-enhancing," says Channon, who has moved into the hotseat for 13 as 'Dangerous' Dave Rutter, having steered the series to huge critical success this gen, moved upstairs.

"When we looked at Kinect, we felt for our game the best use of it was for voice." Which is a polite way of saying Microsoft's posh webcam would be rubbish for actual gameplay.

EA's thinking here, a developer tells me during a demo, was simply "to keep the user in the game", making as many of the pause menu options voice-activated as possible. Substitutions can be made on the fly with a few simple commands; tactics, mentality and formation can be switched; and you can also alter the view with a quick bark of "Change camera. Dynamic" or "Broadcast".

You can go deeper with combo commands that serve as tactical shortcuts. I'm given a couple of examples: "Take it to the corners" switches the tactic, mentality and formation simultaneously to appropriate settings; "Hard five minutes" instructs your team to play the offside trap and adopt an ultra-defensive mentality, while keeping the formation the same. This is all customisable, so you can set it up as you see fit.

In Be A Pro there's also a limited set of commands to shout at teammates, such as "pass it", "cross it" and "shoot". It's context-sensitive, too, so a player won't automatically respond to "pass it" if there isn't a good opportunity to.

Ive been shouting "Pass it" whenever kcer has the ball in pro clubs, and thats never worked, I'll be glad to see it as a feature in 2013

This Kinect thing will be all fun 'n' games until someone decides to be a wiseass and shout a racial slur at the game. The joke will be on them when a week later they get a notice in the mail that they've been fined 10,000 Euros and it has to be paid in thirty days or their game will self-destruct.

That right there is why I only play Pro Ranked in the Pro Camera, my practice in the Arena carries over to my play in-game. Directly.

URGH I'm so psyched for this game. Just read about the inclusion of the Skill Games and I thought "perfect". There was alot of features I felt I didn't really master that well despite playing the game for a long time; so I'm glad they included something like this. Oh, and nationals! Great, awesome!

Also, screenshots show that you can apparently unlock older/historical kits:

I'm very, very excited about this game. I don't expect it to be revolutionary or anything, but I'm so starving for anything new football-related. I even got my local pre-order in. URRGH come ooon release it already!

So will us PS3 users have to purchase PS3 Move in order to curse at the ref, or will my bluetooth headset be enough of an investment for this feature?

Here's hoping they fix the Virtual Pro "pick your position" menu and performance ratings.

Geezer

They need to change pro clubs to be like in fifa 11, where you can see the rating of your opponents pros so you can tell if they're hacked (overall ends up being 127). In fifa 12 you have no way of knowing until you're in a game and they're 6ft striker can run 100mph and score from the halfway line and has a full bar of stamina after 80 minutes.

What the fuck did I do?

Baibai Kuaikuai posted:

I just want to be not locked into kits. Let me change up the socks, shorts and top combos, not to mention a second keeper kit, please. EA always seems to miss putting in any of the simple little quality of life things that truly round out a game. Like...adding the ability to sign for a big club but get loaned out in a VP career mode! Asking for loans and transfers in VP career mode owns and I can't wait.

The game itself is fun to play. There are a few different modes for everyone to enjoy but outside of playing actual matches everything is dry and boring between advancing. I may be the only person that actually likes the single player VP career mode but there are so many little 'RPG-lite' type elements that could be put in (i.e. talking to the press as a player) in between advancing through games.

Also, if I start a career with a club, please quit selling every other big named player on my team. I joined to play with them, not loving replace them all. It seems like teams sign on my highly rated guy, and there's some stupid AI logic that the wage bill or some poo poo will be too high and they unload the best talent. Sign me to a better contract then, you stupid AI club.

FIFA has replaced NCAA Football as my EA Sports crack game, hopefully it doesn't follow the same mold and just roster/kit update every year while ignoring everything because they have no competition.

Blimpkin posted:

This only works to maintain/improve rating if the rest of the OTP people are playing in the right areas. It just seems like my rating arbitrarily goes down; as if the game gets closer to completion and goal scorers/assist creators ("big impact" type rating boosts) remain at the top and the rest of the scores get adjusted to be just lower for final rating. I've seen full point drops while doing what I should be doing in my position.

FIFA Soccer Blog just posted an article on FIFA 13's PC features....yet it no longer exists, not sure why. Here is the rip that GReader saved.

quote:

Also on display during our second day at the studio was the PC version of FIFA 13, running on a pretty beefy rig and a three monitor display. Yes, that does say three.

The setup was certainly eye catching and allowed for a full view of the pitch at all times. Obviously you’d need a powerful PC to run it that way, but the game didn’t really seem to suffer and it allowed you to see things you might otherwise not, particularly when penalties were taken as the wider display allowed you to see the ref and the inactive goalkeeper standing towards the touchline, small details, but it looked incredible.

Sticking with that theme, there’s been work done to the UI to optimise for dual displays, which was apparently a gripe last year, and overall everything in that regard has a much more PC “feel” with icons being updated to be more PC friendly. Work has also been done to get the game running better on lower spec machines and part of that includes the return of “window mode” which we’re told featured in last years demo but was removed because of a potential exploit. That exploit has been plugged and window mode returns.

The game is still a full console parody and will include everything on offer on the 360 and PS3 including FUT. On the pitch everything was playing pretty smoothly and the Impact Engine updates and First Touch Control were present and correct. I’d be lying if I said I could tell the difference between the PC version and the console, especially as we were playing with wired 360 pads.

That isn’t the only way to play though. FIFA 13 on PC now features Keyboard and Mouse support, which also makes a couple of cool new features possible. Firstly on the defensive side of things, you’ve got click to man mark. It’s pretty simple, you hold a modifier, then click on the opponent that you want to man mark and the nearest CPU controlled player will pick him up.

Secondly, you’ve got click and drag runs. When attacking you again hold a modifier, at which point the AI takes over for you temporarily. With the modifier held you click on a player and drag to draw a run out. Simple. They don’t have to be linear runs, they can be curved. For this year at least, those features are offline only for the sake of balancing, but that could change in the future.

We’ll keep this one brief as we’re covering most stuff under the 360/PS3 umbrella, but we managed to have a chat with Ian Jarvis whilst we were there and figured that the PC guys would find these little bits interesting.

FIFA 13 PC In Focus
  • Dual and triple display setups have been optimised.
  • Window Mode is back to help low performance systems and capturing.
  • FIFA 13 PC is feature identical to the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions.
  • Mouse and keyboard support is now available.
  • Click to man mark and mouse drag player runs have been added for offline modes.

The developer touched on this in one of the links posted. Transfers from clubs are going to be based on more than just price tag; player's happiness, club rivalry, how vital a player is to his current club, among other things, so that when your pro signs for a club they don't automatically bench or sell the team's best player(s).

Everything they've said so far has had me excited about the game. I just hope there's no more of the little irritations (score thing, YOU CAN'T PAUSE, YOU DICK messages that stay on for half an hour, drop down thing with meaningless stats in H2H, etc.) that all build up into making it frustrating to play.

Gamescom (15th-19th August) is usually when they announce multiplayer features. It will be astounding if they haven't touched it this year, given the last two years was them gutting the mode (11) and then fixing the bugs they never patched (12).
