How's all the domming going? I havn't been able to follow the games/LP after work got more intense (and my attempt at playing a blood nation sucked out my soul). I wanna pick it up again, but it's so much work.

You have to resist the lure of micromanagement, shure a little is good. And more would be better, but only as long as it doesn't suck out your fun at playing the game. In this case it sounds simple, how do you like non blood nations?

Babby We can end this one. With Lord Windy no longer submitting turns (for either this game or ABadGame) and Sauro bowing out (gracefully, I might add), the only two people left are myself and LLSix. I'm more than happy to call it and give LLSix the win (sorry, gbuchold, you gave up!) It was a really good game, I learned a lot, and it's too bad we didn't get to see all the end-game explosions. All hail T'ien Ch'i, victor of Babby. gbuchold posted:Babby - Sauromatia

Haha, micromanagement is pretty much mandatory in this game as far as I've seen, so far. I don't think I'll be playing a blood nation until the day I suddenly find myself out of work. But if any new games are opening up I'd like to take a stab at it.

NewbiesAndOrIdiots According to TheDemon on IRC, we should be posting game announcements here as well as the Private Game thread. So here we go... I've created a new game. The target audience is 12 people who are either relatively new to Dominions 3 or have been away long enough that they forgot how things work. It's a relatively large map (169 land + 16 water, wrap) which means that new players will be able to expand comfortably before the inevitable conflicts. It also means this could prove to be a lengthy game, so please be prepared. You can download the map here: http://koti.kapsi.fi/elmokki/dom3/m...aringrhinos.zip It's Early Age. I've never played on the map, so I don't know how well an aquatic nation would do. We'll be using the following mods: AwesomeGods2.01, AwesomeEndgame 1.5, AwesomeItems 1.2. You can download them here: http://www.proactiveapathy.com/dom3/mods/mods.html Sign up using the GGS: http://www.brainwrinkle.net/ If you have any questions, leave them here, PM me, or catch me on IRC. ski fucked around with this message at Oct 20, 2012 around 22:53 |

Babby - an LP! I was inspired by ZorbaTHut's excellent LP to do an LP of my very first game. Now that the game is over and I won't be showing the other goons where best to hit me, I can share it all with you! I had no idea what I was doing most of the time, but some of the other players did. I can guarantee showcasing of couple of really neat tricks and all sorts of half-smart tom-foolery. I present to you: Baby - Yet Another Ascension Story fake edit: I found the Tien Chi banner I'm using on GIS, but the url was LPix. If the goon I stole it from will come forward I'd love to give them credit. It is majestic. LLSix fucked around with this message at Oct 20, 2012 around 15:40 |

NewbiesAndOrIdiots Looks like we're sitting at about 6 players signed up. If we don't get more soon, I may choose a smaller map so we can get started. If any of you wannabe Dominions 3 players are sitting on the fence about joining a multi-player game, I strongly encourage you to give it a try. You'll enjoy it. ski posted:NewbiesAndOrIdiots

Holy poo poo, an Illwinter game on Steam?! I recognized the Dom3 graphics immediately, though I haven't played CoE3. Am I stupidly crazy to hope for Dom3 to be on Steam in the next 175 years?

Am I stupidly crazy to hope for Dom3 to be on Steam in the next 175 years? It would probably depend what deal they have with their current publisher for Dom3 (Shrapnel Games). My guess is since we haven't seen or heard anything at all, that Dom3 is exclusive to them, so only if Shrapnel as a whole decides to move to Steam, which seems like a "never" kind of thing.

Cardiovorax posted:For anybody who sees the same thing and thinks about buying it, don't even bother. CoE3 is so goddamn awful that I can't even believe it's from the guys who came up with Dominions. I purchased it on impulse because I love the Dominions series to bits and I can't believe how utterly, utterly poo poo it is. It's literally nothing but a few cribbed Dom3 graphics tacked onto what feels like an early alpha of the original Civilizations. I can't express how much I wish Steam gave refunds right now. It feels to me like a concept demo for an interesting game. Like, if they'd thought out recruitment prices a little more, allowed for less swingy commander recruitment, told the AI not to randomly commit suicide and not had "a deer came out of fog of war and capped your citadel" bits, it could be fun. I don't know, maybe I'm just impossibly bad at the game but it feels like it tends to end through either AI suicide or random chance before any interesting units can be recruited or interesting powers used.

After reading most of the LPs in the subforum (again) I'm almost ready to actually play the demo and see if everything clicks. I think I can wrap my head around the concept of micromanagement, but this also worries me:gbuchold posted:Diplomacy is too important to play this game without IRC access I'm currently in Spain, and that's about 9 hours before PST. My playing time is also quite limited (from 8-9 PM until I fall asleep in front of my computer). So, my question is: are enough goons playing from Europe? And, if not, is email enough to play the diplomacy game, or is everyone going to bully me because I'm not chatting to the other players?

Most of the people I interact with on a regular basis are on /only/ during work hours in America. That and there are other European players who hang out on IRC, I wouldn't sweat it too much. That being said I know some players will respond to non IRC communication, its just much slower. Edit: vvvvv One a day is pretty much standard. Sleep is overrated, anyway. Another question while I download the demo and actually try the game: How often are turns played? Most of the turn based strategy games I have played in MP have a 1 day turnaround, but Dominions seems far too complex for that.

At least, that's what the LPs seem to imply. The nice thing is that usually whoever is organizing the game will allow a few things: 1) Pauses if one or more players will be unable to do their turns because they are out of town or something. 2) Changing the timer from 24-27 hours to 48 hours or longer. This usually happens towards the later stages of the game. 3) Turning off the auto-turn-generation stuff completely. Then the turns will only gen when all the players have submitted. I plan to be as flexible as possible with the NewbieAndOrIdiots game, as long as we have enough lead-time so we can let Tenjou know about any requested pauses or other modifications.

I'll manage though, as long as we've got a 24 hour timer, I'll get everything in on time.

Folks sometimes set timers to 26-30 hours jus so that a person doesn't just stale at the same time every (other) day. If you're able to idle on IRC that's often more than enough. Also, there are quite a few European players.

NewbiesAndOrIdiots We have to remove a C'tis player who must have signed up by mistake. As soon as that happens, the game will start. Have fun and contact me if you have any problems at all. NOTE: Instead of double-posting both here and on the Private Games forum, please refer from now on to this thread: http://forums.somethingawful.com/sh...hreadid=3498140 for updates. Oh, and it looks like we had problems with two pretenders. The game reported this: ![]() This is most likely caused by Sauro and Mictlan uploading pretenders that were made with different mods enabled. TenjouUtena has backed up the other gods, so if Sauro and Mictlan players could please make new pretenders and re-up (and then let me know), it would be appreciated. Both players have the correct mods installed (or else they wouldn't be able to connect to the server normally), but the game doesn't do any error checking for mods until the game starts, apparently. ski fucked around with this message at Oct 28, 2012 around 13:42 |

I have to say, I think I've had the worst luck in my current game. The RNG decided to place Bloodhedge druids, elephants and a ton of barbarians all right next to my starting capital. I finally kill the barbarians, and now next door are heaps of lion tribesmen (60+) and even more barbarians. It's turn 5 and I'm stuck with 2 provinces for a little longer. All I want is some easy to kill normal humans
