![]() What is Castle Story? Castle Story is a voxel-based creative strategy game about building castles brick by brick and defending them against enemies. What do I do? Your goal will be to explore a vast landscape full of mysteries and dangers, and defend your castle against onslaughts of hostile creatures and possibly other players. The world of Castle Story takes place on flying islands, high above an infinite ocean. The islands are made of voxels, cubes made of various elements, which means you can dig, carve and build anything you can imagine in the landscape. Digging underground to gather resources, stacking bricks on top of each other to build a wall or even tunnelling through a mountain is all possible and even necessary to keep your Bricktrons safe. Carefully designing your castle not only requires creativity and imagination, but thanks to pathfinding AI and physics simulations, Castle Story has layers of strategy and depth on top of an otherwise free-form sandbox experience. What is it similar to? The game combines ideas from Dwarf Fortress, Minecraft, Dungeon Keeper and Netstorm. What does it look like? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BMCWVvuza_shttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwZdXRPeYrc When is it out??? The game will likely follow a release schedule similar to the one adopted very successfully by Minecraft's development team. An early prototype will be available in August 2012 to Kickstarter Backers, the Beta is estimated to be available for purchase in October 2012. The retail version will likely not come out until much later in the development cycle. How do I get hold of it? You can pledge $15 or more on Kickstarter until Sunday Aug 26, 9:59am EDT .
Edit: The studio actually clarified that at $15 you still own the game, you don't have to pay again. Ignore the wording on Kickstarter, it's wrong. N.B. I'm not in any way affiliated with the studio.

Looks great, but why would I pay a $10 premium for being able to bugtest for the game I just bought? Isn't it usually the early adapters who get rewarded with better prices in return for feedback?

I believe there is no premium for early adopters, you get the final game and all updates for $15. They screwed up the description in the Kickstarter and can't change it at this point. I updated the OP as well to reflect that.

Maybe I'm just not up on the times, but do people usually shell out money for alphas nowadays? I can understand getting in through a preorder or being a member of the community, but charging people for it seems unusual and a bit misguided for an indie title. e: Not saying it's unethical or anything. If people will pay for it, then by all means provide it. This just seems to me like something that's usually thrown in as a reward for early support.

Your reward for contributing more is a sneak peak at the game before anyone else gets to play. You are not obligated to actually test the game and submit bug reports or anything. Think of it as an early access type deal. It will be buggier but you're still getting the game before anyone else.

Also, now adays giving out a alpha is fairly dangerous, partially due to raised expectations (Noootch

Some of the things they've said about the idea of how multiplayer games will work have made me wonder if this isn't going to be as persistent as DF or Minecraft - if perhaps you play extended matches but it's not expected you'll have one castle/world forever the way you'll find yourself doing in those two.

Yeah, I hope the extra money they will get out of their KS will go to developing a good random level generating algorithms. That would make the game massively playable. And popular, I guess. This is the first game I helped KS, mainly because it's already at a good-looking prototype stage. I mean, you'll see how many Wasteland 2 or Double Fine Game backers will be disappointed with the games just because it's really hard to tell how good/true to fans vision will these end up being. This, on the other hand, looked pretty much playable in a video made half a year ago. Their devblogs read very promising, too. The micromanagement of building the castles looks really fun and reminds me of Rollercoaster Tycoon. It was simple but allowing many outcomes. The only things I'm sure about is how will combat work and where would the monsters come from to attack the castles? The huge crystals?

The video made it look like they came from those giant head statues with the glowing eyes. The monsters have eyes that looked just like the statue's. Maybe the monsters are activated upon grabbing that crystal like in the video?
