This thread is going places

The OP, and then a later cherrypicked part, bolded the red flags and the aspects:

Rafzakael posted:

A year and a half ago I started college, and was content to make some friends, do a little partying, and get some good grades on fairly easy classes (American History 101, for instance). It was in that class that I met my current fiancee [ed note: HE MUST BE LIKE 20 and he's engaged?!], a Japanese student studying abroad in America. The partying idea went out the window and I fell in love with her. My grades skyrocketed because, well, and their study habits.

Anyways, I recently got back from my second trip to Japan to spend time with her and her family (each time I go I spend a month). We've been doing the long distance thing for a year now, and it sucks, but so far its been workable. No, I don't think she's cheating on me, and no, she doesn't think likewise. We're basically a regular couple, only separated by a large distance. I also need to mention that as of now, both our families adore each other.

This second trip to Japan stirred up a few things; for one, my fiancee who previously stated she wanted to live in America is now wanting to stay in Japan. I was set to go into college for law, but after talking with my uncle (who owns his own law firm) and reading the law school megathread here, I decided to pursue a different career path. At first I was all set to switch majors to teaching and teach English over there; a respectable career, one that I'd enjoy since I love to teach/coach, and my fiancee was on board with it too.

Then I pitched the idea to my parents.

First came the shock: "What? You're joking, right?"
Then came the tears/angry yelling: "You're breaking my heart, you're abandoning your family for a girl"
Then came the threats: "We're paying for half your college so you are going to do what we tell you to do or else we'll saddle you with the bill and disown you"

I was a bit stunned to say the least; never before have my parents threatened anything even close to that. Worst thing until that point that my father did was snap my gameboy in half when I was in middle school (my pokemons )

My fiancee is okay with living in America apparently, but let me know in that really passive "america is nice I guess..." way. From what we discussed, she's okay with America but she wants to move in sooner rather than later if America is the only choice. She really thinks our kids would be better raised in Japan, but there's really no getting to Japan without splitting off from the family, so I can't just ditch. I feel like I let her down. Since my family sort of agrees with the no law school thing, they settled on me 'following my dad's footsteps'.

So essentially I'm switching careers from lawyer (what I wanted to be since I was a kid because justice and truth and all that) to what my father does, which is Health and Safety (a broad term, but he works for a Fortune 500 company double-checking worksites for safety regulations and making sure workers follow those regulations.) It's not a bad career, but not one I'm particularly interested in. Since he's in the upper echelons of the business, only really answering to the vice president himself, I would basically be guaranteed a good-paying job (Health and Safety isn't a popular field, apparently, so they'd train me and groom me and toss me a job immediately after training. They apparently did the same for someone else who decided to leave after training because he didn't want to leave Ohio, and I swear that has to be a lie because honestly no one wants to live in Ohio). For the record, I don't mind the travel/moving.

What I want to do is provide for my eventual family. I love my fiancee more than life itself and would do anything to ensure she has a happy and fulfilling life, and I'd like to do the same for my future kids. But the job that I'd be undertaking involves a lot of traveling; my father is gone usually two to three weeks out of the month, and the weeks he isn't he works 8-5. I don't feel I'd be home enough to raise my children or help make sure my wife is happy. But then the money comes into play and jesus christ its like 80k right out of college and that's fantastic but family and love and time at home but money but )

I'm really just looking for personal insight from other goons on this one. I can't really deviate from the health/safety study path, otherwise I'm out on the street with no money and no education, and similarly no way to get back to Japan, so asking 'what should I do' is a bit of a silly question with an obvious answer. If anything, what can I do to expedite her moving here? What would be the proper steps in preparing to move out with her and start my own family (something we're thinking about doing once we get on our feet)? How would I go about getting on my own feet (as in, what's the general process people go through if they don't want to end up homeless)?

I hope I didn't ramble too much, I edited this a lot to remove fluff. Sorry!

Rafzakael posted:

My fiancee and I had a nice long talk over the entire month basically about it; it's not so much that she doesn't like America, but she...

I feel bad for typing this, but she says she's paranormally attuned. As in, can sense ghosts. I'm not going to comment on whether or not she actually can or not, and outside of these ghost-sense-tingling episodes, she's as normal as any other girl. She feels Japan would be better for the kids for studying/schooling/sports, and she's also close to shrines and monks that can help her with her ghosts.

It's only one page as of now!

Mjaulm that is amazing, I love the tiny details like the Cheetos box.

One of the gooniest E/N threads in recent times was the guy looking for advice on what to think of when you have plenty of time. This was because he was planning to go to Alaska to gut fish so he could buy stuff like a fleshlight and a Game of Thrones box set. He actually did it and in a way it was an E/N success story but there was something so goony about his motives that it was rather funny.

The worst parts about this thread were:
a) that the little girl had obviously been getting herself ready for school long enough for it to be habit forming and not remotely unusual
b) she obviously enjoys school more than home, most kids are counting down the days until it's the drat weekend

I hope they end up with nice caring relatives and that the foster system doesn't chew them up.

I'm sorry but that house was disgusting. The kid has no place to do her homework, to play safely or to just relax. I wouldn't trust the food, the shower, or anything in that house. It's not just unseemly, it's downright dangerous to her health. And being poor is not the reason why that house was that disgusting and littered. It's more indicative of some mental issues which is only another good reason to get that kid out of that house.
