Darksiders 2 is set to be released August 14th and I noticed there wasn't a thread yet, so here we go!![]() For those not in the know, Darksiders was a great action game that played very much like a zelda or metroid type game, having an open-ish type world with various dungeons that had new items to find that would be needed to be used in that dungeon. Plot synopsis from the wiki: Awakened by the End of Days, Death, the most feared of the legendary Four Horsemen, embarks upon a quest to restore mankind, and redeem his brother’s name. Along the way, the Horseman discovers that there are far worse things than an earthly Apocalypse, and that an ancient grudge may threaten all of Creation... Darksiders 2 takes place around the same time frame as the first game, except this time you take control of Death. Whereas in the first game War was a strong, slow character, Death is extremely agile and very quick with his attacks. The game has also been expanded greatly, with the developers saying that all of the dungeons combined fit into just the first area of Darksiders 2. ![]() An extensive skill tree system has been added this time around, being split between melee and spells, and has various subsets and additions to base skills. Melee appears to be more tradtional type God of War moves, and the spells tree adds summoning spells, area of effect attacks, and so on. The developers have also added a very large loot system, with various weapons and armor such as claws, hammers, scythes, etc. Also, if you like seeing numbers appearing on dudes when you hit them, this may be the game for you. For the best look at the game (kill trees, loot, boss battles), the Quicklook EX that Giantbomb.com have put up is a must see: http://www.giantbomb.com/quick-look...ers-ii/17-6376/ Lastly, there is a collectors edition being offered, although the only place it is still available from THQ: ![]() All preorders also will include the Argyle's Tomb DLC, which is an extensive dungeon that will be added 30 days after release. ![]() So what do you guys think? Will Vigil games pull it off or are they being too ambitious? Huntsekker fucked around with this message at Aug 3, 2012 around 02:06 |

What I REALLY want to know is if they have or have not forgotten the zelda-like puzzles that really made me enjoy the first game. Every video I see is combat this, skill points that, nothing about good dungeon design or anything. I'm kinda worried, but maybe that's just not the kind of thing they like to talk about in previews.

I think this looks like a great sequel. They had a great base to build on with the first Darksiders, and they're just adding depth and width from every angle. I actually really liked the first one, although the combat was a little rough, and this looks like it fixes that. I wish more devs would put effort and thought into their sequels like this. I really can't imagine they'd get rid of the Zelda puzzles, from the interviews I've seen the devs know what people like and didn't like about the game.

It was announced today that some weapons and armor will be unlockable of you have a darksiders 1 save, most notably if you have the achievement for beating the game. I've added a picture of the shoulder armor and the scythes you receive at the bottom of the OP.

From all the newer previews, it seems they kept the old level designers who have since refined their skills. The new overworld areas are a lot less sprawly according to Gamespot. One of the devs also did a great forum QA session over at neogaf which is also worth a look. I for one am really excited for this game.

I had fun enough with Darksiders that I'll come back for a sequel. I just hope they did some more original ideas this time, instead of grabbing parts from games they liked.

Pretty much this. I'm not really psyched by the loot and evolving stuff though. Who am I fooling anyway ? I already pre-ordered the thing on GMG for a steal.

This is one of my most anticipated games of the year. Just replaying the first one, and although it has some rough edges, it's just really great. I feel like it's one of the best debuts for a development team in the last decade and I can't wait to see what they do with the sequel. This whole series is just a step away from becoming the spiritual successor to Legacy of Kain. I really hope they go all in with a batshit crazy plot in 2 as well.

So after the Giant Bomb quick look I'm very excited about this game. I was so excited in fact that I bought the original game for PC. However the game crashes 5 minutes in after my first fight with the angels who are attacking the big golem. I've googled the problem but nothing seems to work.

For those interested, there's an iOS app Darksiders: Soul Harvest. The app uses your location to find where in your vicinity that people have checked into Facebook, and you can "harvest" their souls to unlock wallpaper, a digital comic and an in-game weapon. I work in Jersey City, and it actually feels a little inappropriate to be "harvesting souls" from the 9/11 Memorial...

I hope it has a little bit smoother difficulty curve, the Tiamat fight in 1 was like hitting a wall, mostly because of the crossblade controls.

I can't wait until this comes out. I lovedddd Darksiders 1 but I haven't met anyone I know that's actually played it. I'm fixing to buy it again for PC just to play through one more time before 2 comes out. I'm assuming the game saves that get you the in-game content count for PC too, right? I plan on getting 2 on PC as well.

Just a quick update: it was announced yesterday that there will be a new game + option after you beat game, where you pull in all your loot, levels, abilities, etc. I always love when I have the option of new game plus in games, so this is a nice bonus for sure.

I really enjoyed Darksiders as well, it seemed a bit underrated by most of the press for what it was. It may have cribbed a little from Zelda, but honestly too few games crib from Zelda, puzzle focused open world action adventures are a seriously underrepresented genre when you compare to say, cover-based shooters. I hope the addition of the loot system doesn't break the goddamn game though. I like finding gear, but I really have my fingers crossed that this isn't just a "hey cram this thing from Diablo in there will ya?"

So, hey hey, extra loot whoring!

What was everyone's take on the bosses in the first game? I really hope there are more bosses like Abaddon and Uriel, for some reason the other bosses really didn't do it for me, especially Straga.

I just beat the 4th boss yesterday and so far the hardest one was Tiamat, the first boss. Every other one since then I've beaten first try. Its almost a reverse difficulty curve because I think they've actually been getting easier.

EDIT:^^^ That's a pretty common complaint. Tiamat was very tough but all the other bosses not so much. That said, I really loved Tiamat's dungeon which had her and the griffon you rode in on fighting as you made your way through. I was expecting Tiamat to pulverize the griffon right away, but watching them drag it out almost got me to start cheering for my erstwhile mount. I really enjoyed Darksiders 1 - Will there were parts that felt clunky, for a first outing it showed a lot of promise. I'm looking forward to playing this game. The Zelda-like puzzles were among my favorite parts. SirPhoebos fucked around with this message at Aug 7, 2012 around 17:31 |

The game is really awesome its just that the difficulty is all wonky. The hardest parts by far are when 2 of the big nonboss enemies show up.

I've been replaying the game on Apocalyptic difficulty the last few days and the game really isn't difficult. Tiamat is only tricky because the Crossblade mechanics are so clunky. After that, the Griever's main attack can be completely negated by standing behind something, the only difficult part about the Stygian is waiting for it to get into a position that you can knock its mask off, and Silitha just involves dodging around a whole bunch. Haven't done Straga or the Destroyer yet, but I don't recall either of them being particularly tricky either. It just wasn't a hard game.

Loved the first game and I can't wait for this one. I do like how it looks like the enemies won't take a million hits to kill like the first game. I really want to see more gameplay footage of the spell caster skill tree. I really love the idea of summoning a small army of zombies to fight off the forces of heaven and hell.

They definitely are taking this game in a weird new direction, what with the numbers and the "farming for gear" or whatever? It's like they decided that they didn't want it to just LOOK like World of Warcraft, it needed to play like it too.

I preordered the gently caress out of this game on Steam, even got the dumb Prima Strategy Guide so I could get some stupid extra content in the game for I am a sucker. Though I might actually crack it open (or, uh, whatever the digital equivalent is of doing that) if some of the collectibles are as tricky as in Darksiders 1. Which is my FAVORITE ACTION ADVENTURE GAME EVER I really can't wait for this to come out and I hope that it helps Vigil do more awesome crap and helps THQ not die.I beat the original game for the first time on the PS3, then bought it and did some hex editing to "transfer" the Abyssal Armor set over to the PC for my second play-through on Apocalyptic. The defense and life leech that the Abyssal Armor gives is so substantial that it makes an Apocalyptic game easier than Normal was (and that compounds dramatically when you get more socketables with life leech). I will say it is an incredibly ambitious game with a lot of mechanical changes from the first game, which has me a little worried, but the first game was ambitious, too, in its own way, pulling in and tweaking elements from a really broad variety of other games and presenting a coherent experience - and they pulled it off really well. I loved the battle against the Stygian. Ruin really did feel like a bad-rear end Epona. So, here's hoping Darksiders 2 is a hit.

You can't use other people's save files without some effort, as they're keyed to Steam ID - you have to hex edit them to think they're keyed to your Steam ID. Also the PC port has achievement issues. You only get to use the Abyssal Armor, after having collected it, if the unlock is CURRENTLY stored in memory. So you have to start a new game right away and equip it, or you'll find, upon closing and re-opening the game, that it doesn't remember that you should be able to use the Abyssal Armor in new games. See the bottom of this post for details. Oh, also, vsync does not work on the PC port. D3DOverrider is an absolute must. Any gaming PC from the last 5 years can run this sucker maxed out without even upclocking all the way, but you'll get tearing if you don't use D3Doverrider. Control panel forcing is a no-go. However, forcing supersampling AA is a yes-go, and I highly recommend it, because it looks great. Apart from some basic console headaches it is a stable port. Best played with a gamepad, obviously, but you can do it with mouse + keyboard if you want. You are making GBS threads me, this went to print? Edit: Hey, you're in luck, this guy went to some real effort to make the steps straightforward for anyone to do. It's not that hard, you only have to do it once. Like 4 of them over three waves of enemies. Blocking in DS1 felt a little off to me anyway, since there is a small instant following a dash where you reset before blocking only if you hold down RB and don't move LS or something, so I'm kinda glad they took it out for Death and just let you dash easier anyway.

No, I'm almost done with it as well, and there's only one part on Apocalyptic that actually challenged me, and that was probably because I'm deliberately gimping myself by never using the chaos blade (since it gets max level on its own). There's a part in The Black Throne where you have to fight two of those floating lady shifters at once and when you kill one of them a four-legged demon spawns. Those shifters do retarded amounts of damage; one of them hit me with their spinning attack up close and it took out 4 entire health bars. Playing through on Apocalyptic made me realize just how stiff and annoying the combat can get at times, though (especially with block and dodge on the same button, as mentioned above), so I hope they improve on that in 2. Adding a little more mobility wouldn't hurt. Hakkesshu fucked around with this message at Aug 8, 2012 around 06:41 |

If you've not maxed the stone skin power and aren't using it liberally, you're probably giving yourself a harder time than necessary. Massive boost to defense and offense both, it solves problems. Also by the time I got the Chaos Blade I had maxed, uh, all the weapons, so it really didn't matter at that point, but I really liked the combat and didn't mind running around on a horse forever for THAT achievement. Y'all know about the dodge-->sword thrust invincibility frames, right? Great way to get out of the way of anything. Also liberal use of the jumping spinning attack is great versus I felt like Darksiders had great combat mobility, in the sense that I could get where I wanted to go on the screen no problem, but it relied on some mechanics to do so which weren't perfect.
