![]() Hotline Miami is the latest game from prolifically bizarre Swedish indie developer Jonatan "Cactus" Söderström. Currently in development for PC, Mac, and consoles, it's a collaboration between Cactus and graphic artist Dennis Wedin in which the outnumbered and outgunned player is tasked with killing a series of enemies as efficiently and viciously as possible. Aesthetically, it employs the faux-8-bit style so popular these days with indie developers, but with a healthy dose of neon-streaked weirdness that gives the whole affair the feel of a psychotic acid flashback. It's blisteringly fast-paced, intensely challenging, and insanely gory. Observe: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nv-XCM8sies ![]() Alec Meer of Rock Paper Shotgun did an extensive writeup of his experience with one particular level: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/201...-miami-preview/ I'm incredibly excited for this game. It's the closest thing I've seen to a video game adaptation of Nicolas Winding Refn's film "Drive," both in the general audio-visual aesthetic and in the way the action unfolds. No release date has been announced, but Cactus is known for his extremely rapid development, so hopefully it will be soon.

I was toying around with the closed beta of this roughly somewhere around 2 months ago. I don't like top down games usually, but this game is a loving blast to play. It's a perfect mixture of needing to plan your attacks before starting while also having to think very quickly on the go as it unfolds. You end up throwing your weapons a lot (including guns) to slow down or disarm enemies. The soundtrack by M|O|O|N is absolutely perfect as well. I never got tired of having to hear Paris play. That said, I'm really hype for this game. The video in the OP doesn't really show how hectic the game can be, which is the funnest part. I'm buying this game immediately when it comes out. e: Dennis mask; best mask Literal Nazi Furry fucked around with this message at Aug 6, 2012 around 21:50 |

Hell yes, Cactus is by and far my favorite indie developer, so much weird poo poo that are right out of a fever dream. Also, the hotline is real, I haven't tried it but here's the number: +1(786)519-3708 Someone's gotta record them self calling it.

Yes. Cactus makes the best games. This looks totally rad. Itching to see how the melee combat system works, it looks really fun. Also, this won't happen, I'm sure. But something like this adapted to multiplayer sounds really intensely fun.

Sotsa posted:Yes. Cactus makes the best games. This looks totally rad. Melee is really fun, but most of my focus when I play falls on throwing my weapon into someones face to knock them down and disarm them. When you have a knife and an enemy in the next room over has an uzi, it's just a hell of a lot safer to toss your knife at him rather than running straight at him to try and stab him. Once you get the flow of the game, throwing weapons becomes a very very useful feature considering how relentless and aggressive the AI can be.

I know only a handful of people will understand this reference, but judging from the trailer the game reminds me sort of like Ikiki's game Hakaiman: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vfhy5WzD40g Cactus then told me on twitter that the gameplay is inspired by Ikiki, but more specifically making a game as fun as Nikujin. https://twitter.com/cactusquid/stat...689185753911296 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zrv2FpWefMY I know the strange aesthetic of the game is interesting as well, but this made me excited to check out the gameplay of the game (woahhh).

^Neat catch on the influences.Sotsa posted:Yes. Cactus makes the best games. This looks totally rad. From the previews I've read, it's like: You can grab and murdalize someone, which takes a little while and leaves you vulnerable. If an enemy is knocked over (such as being on the other side of a door you kicked or being hit with a hurled shotgun), you can kill them quicker. A melee weapon kills in one hit, quickly. Everyone can kill you in one hit too, so like the rest of the game victory comes from insane aggression and reflexive planning. edit: Also, while someone who's actually touched + smelled the game-guts is here: Nazi Furry, is there any variation with enemies besides what weapon they have? Are there any that have, like, better senses or quicker reactions or such? I know a preview mentioned attack dogs, but I was curious if there was more human variation. The composer's SoundCloud page is here: http://soundcloud.com/moon_music Also, listen to Cliff Martinez' soundtrack to Drive if you haven't. It's a little more ambient and atmospheric, but makes use of the same kind of sounds to create a similar mood.

NovaPolice posted:edit: Also, while someone who's actually touched + smelled the game-guts is here: From what I've seen, there's the average enemy, attack dogs, and somewhat early in the game there's a boss with a large amount of HP, and the only way you can down him easily is by having a powerful weapon like a shotgun that'll knock him down so that he can't just charge straight and you and punch your head off. He later begins to replace the average enemies in some levels from what I saw. My beta build is from May 23rd and the announcement trailer shows some content that isn't in my build. So there'll probably be more than just those. Also, for when this game comes out, please remember these 3 things: Enemies can and will shoot you through glass. Dogs can jump through glass. Oh poo poo, I had no idea this was in development! Cactus is mad in all the right ways. Nice to see another score attack style of game, and holy poo poo the subject matter. It's like a Travis Bickle simulator. Well, the climax of Taxi Driver, with a heavy dose of hallucinogens and a pounding soundtrack. Kinda has a Dreamweb feel too it too, like protagonist isn't playing with a full deck (yeah, I know the rubber chicken mask might have been a giveaway).

When I was a little kid, like most kids I had to save up for months to be able to buy a single new computer game. Also, back in the dark ages that were the mid 90's, there were little reliable sources to get information about games, especially if they were old. So, on one of my trips to the game store a box caught my eye. It was a game called Dreamweb, with a picture of a badass cyberpunk dude wielding an uzi on the front, and a huge BBFC-15 age rating next to him. The pictures on the back of the box depicted a top down shooter/adventure game, and I simply had to have it. I bought it instantly, and... Never got it to work. It was my white whale for the longest time. I messed around with DOS CD and Mouse drivers, tried all the tricks the little nerd that was me had in his disposal. None of them worked. Now, you might ask what the gently caress an old top down adventure game has to do with Hotline Miami? It's exactly what I pictured in my little mind Dreamweb to be. The trailers make me giddy as hell. First day buy.

'Use Gun On Man' is the solution to about half the problems in the game.

I can kinda see a Dreamwebby vibe from this, what with the overhead-view ultraviolence and the questionable nature of the protagonist's sanity. Like Dominic and that LP point out, Dreamweb's a short, simple adventure game with a bizarre level of pointless detail and a rather well-done sickly atmosphere. Part of that comes through too in the pack-in short-story/copy protection thing, Diary of a (Mad?) Man. It's 40 pages and some change of the main character either going straight up crazy or being driven crazy by outside interests, and little of it really comes up in the game (except for the Things to Remember post-it at the very end). Yes, you can beat it in under 2 hours no sweat but it makes for an unforgetable game if you played when it went it first released. It also had the best manual ever made. Hotline Miami looks and sounds completely insane and the gameplay seems to also be a mix of arcade masochism and faux 8 bit sadistic violence. Man, I cannot wait to murder and get mauled by those beautiful pixels.
