For those reading the thread who wanted more music like the trailer, Cactus gives credit to the two artists who contributed to the official trailer. El Huervo is responsible for the slower, lounge-style music and Perturbator made the driving 80's as gently caress synth music.

They're both fantastic musicians if you're looking for soundtrack-style ambient music, especially Perturbator, whose goal seems to be making music for awesome films that don't exist. Also you should check out Niklas Åkerblad's artwork, it's all crazy intricate neo-meso-american stuff.

The best descriptor I can come up with for this game is it looks like a gorier but hopefully less balls hard Mission Impossible for the NES. A fun game marred by the fact that it actively hated you and wanted you to die at every opportunity.

The game levels with you a bit, allowing you to pan your camera around the whole area so that you can see where the enemies are, what they're armed with, and their patrol routes if they have any. There aren't bullshit deaths in this game, nothing requiring you to die at least once in order to figure out how to get past that part. The only character in the game who gets to be the kind of psycho who pops out of a closet at just the right moment to immediately cut off someones head with an axe before they can react is the protagonist. It's really encouraged to play like this as well!

I wouldn't say that the game wants you to die, but rather that it wants you to have an idea as to how you're going to get through the area without giving your enemies the chance to fight back. It feels very very satisfying when a plan works out and the enemies don't have a clue what hit them. But if you can't do that, then yeah you are going to be dying a lot.

Worth noting that this is where melee weapons and the silenced pistol come into play. If you use a shotgun, smg, assault rifle, etc. then I hope your plan also includes how you expect to take out every enemy that gets alerted after you fire your first shot.

Whoa what? How do you do this? I've had a preview copy for a while now and never knew that you could do that

The game really is as fun as it looks though, for anybody wondering. It hits that sweet spot that very few games accomplish whereby if you die, you just hit restart without even thinking because it's that fun. All you care about is getting right back into the action and causing chaos once more. It's freakin' glorious, and I've no doubt that this will be Cactus' major breakthrough game that finally gets him the attention that he deserves.

Happy Happy Breakdance Challenge 4

I was working ("working") taking photos at GamesCom all week and I went to the Hotline Miami stand every day, always too late except one day when I went at lunch and played the gently caress out of it. Dennis, the artist, was looking after the stand. I spent a good few hours talking to the guy over the week and he's an awesome dude. Oh and he swears he had never heard of Dreamweb until someone pointed it out, by the way.

Anyway, I can't stress enough how good this game is. It's absolutely under my skin. My particular take on attempting to categorise it would be a hosed-in-the-head Alien Breed crossed with Hitman, where everything is a one hit kill.

A typical scene will pan out like this: you use shift to scope out a bit more of the level, plan an attack route, wait for the right timing so everyone's in place, then you fly and you loving have the most intense 8 seconds you could imagine. Then you gently caress up because you flap and you jump out of your skin because some dude comes hurtling into the room you didn't account for and BLAM your loving head is halfway across the room. You hit r and immediately restart and have another go.

Now you're hooked.

Everything about it feels like an intense, ultra violent late 80's action film. It's got all the sweat, the neon colours, the heat, the tension, the gore. It's the moments where you've got your route planned, you think "ok...ok..here we go....any second now..." and that tension as you wait for the exact moment (and sometimes you end up hesitating for a while - always a sure fire way to die) and then you burst in, put the plan into motion and, if it comes off right, you feel like a loving badass and everyone is down in a few seconds.

Except it's not that easy. This game is definitely hard, but immensely rewarding. When I had finished, my WASD hand was loving sore and cramped up because I hadn't moved it for the whole session. My throat was bone dry, my forehead covered in sweat and I had to apologise to Dennis for sweating all over his keybaord.

It's like you've taken way too much coke and you're on edge to gently caress and you know that, in a second, you'll have to kick that door open as the guy goes past, throw your bat at the other guy before he fires, smash the first guy's head into the floor until it bleeds, run over and curb stomp the other one (using the wall, that is), then get his shotgun, shoot the guy who walks in shortly afterward and then loving get ready for madness as four guys come hurtling in the room that all need to be dispatched fast, clean, without missing, or you're dead meat.

My throat is dry just talking about it.

More specific details:

Most of the characters in the game are Dennis' friends and contributors to the game. The bands that made the music are all hanging out in the bar.

Dennis' mask is indeed the best.

You can knock someone over using a swinging door. you can also shoot the door to swing it open and knock someone over.

Punching someone or throwing a weapon at them (apart from knives and scissors and the like) knocks them down but doesn't kill them: you have to finish them off which takes a couple of seconds.

Every gun, thrown sharp object and swung melee weapon is a one hit kill (both ways) and when you combine that with the speed of both you and the AI, it makes the combat intense as gently caress.

This is a proper game, with emergent tactics and strategy - Dennis said I'd invented a new tactic he hadn't seen before ( ) which was to throw a melee weapon at a guy armed with a gun who is in a tough spot to approach without getting seen and shot. The guy gets up, picks up the melee weapon you threw at him and comes looking for you. Takes him out of his post and he doesn't have a gun anymore.

It's fun as gently caress: it is genuinely one of the only things at GamesCom I enjoyed playing (Absolution was the other).

Sorry about the sperging but it really is loving great. You owe it to yourself to play it.

EDIT: and it absolutely must be played with headphones.

It is an overhead shooter. You can see enemies even if they are out of your line of sight, but they can't do that and rely on hearing and line of sight. You are sent into buildings, consisting of floors, to kill everyone and occasionally retrieve something; you can kill anyone in one weapon attack or grapple, and they can do the same to you. If you die, you restart on the floor quickly. It is a mixture of stealth, killing, planning paths to killing, and killing.

It takes place in Miami in the late 80s, you take jobs on your phone from people that might not be real, you can wear intelligent animals masks that might also be not real, and frankly everything in your jobs and outside of them seems a bit hazy. And neony, and synthy.

Hotline Miami will be at the Eurogamer Expo in London. You should definitely go and try it out.

I can't stress enough how so much of what makes this game good is the feel of playing it. For me, it turned from a curiosity I heard mentioned on Giant Bomb, to a "huh that look pretty cool" from the trailer to "I loving love this to death" after playing it.

I really hope that whoever is in charge of the Hotline Miami twitter feed and hotline phone number is not allowed anywhere near developing the game's story. One of the things that was good about the demo version of the game is the fact that it never spends time talking about or thinking about the actual act of violence. Even the phone calls that send you out on your missions leave out any murderous instructions and they tend to emphasize discreteness, something that the twitter feed seems to lack.

Some things related to Miami and lost hitmen:
One of the folk behind the game's music and general Cactus collaborator El Huervo made a nice poster/cover-art for the game, which can be seen on the game's facebook page.

There was a preview on EDGE Online with a quote I liked and a brief spoiler at the end.
The quote is “The main character uses the masks to disconnect himself from guilt,” says Wedin. “As we all know, animals can’t be held guilty for their own actions. Gameplay-wise, the masks will alter the player’s attributes to a certain extent, from smaller things like walking speed to the possibility of using a unique weapon.”
The presumably minor spoiler is that one of the levels is composed of, or contains, a dreamy hospital escape sequence.

Sweet dreams.
