Power Creep.

Instead of making weapons more 'unique' for Rares and Ultra-Rares, they just made some of them more powerful, same with characters. They did this because people were willing to shell out real-money to get the latest URs/Classes.

It's best you think of ME:Multiplayer as a tier game like World of Tanks. You start out at the bottom tier, then work your way up to T10 Weapons and classes.

I dunno. I think weapons have a good amount of diversity, especially shotguns. GPS vs Graal vs claymore vs Reegar...each has its own kinda operation. If hit-detection worked better then the Graal and GPS would be right up there with the last couple.

Other 'unique' weapons that are still in heavy rotation are Acolytes, Javelin, Falcon, collector SMG/SR, PPR, typhoon, kishok, arc pistol...

There are some overpowered weapons that seem kinda dull. Harrier, Hurricane, Black Widow, Wraith, Paladin. I think those were all release weapons though? Most of the later added weapons tended to be goofy, like the Graal, Kishok, and Krysae.

I don't think that things have been homogenized so much as they've created characters and weapons that totally eclipse the ones available in the beginning. Or that they've nerfed characters/weapons into obscurity (I miss my Carnifex/Falcon toting FQE/ SalEng that was an absolute monster against the Geth). Why run a human infiltrator when the Geth infiltrator can poo poo out so much more damage on top of a recharging debuff power?

Frankly, the human infiltrator was outclassed at launch, by the Salarian and even the FQI. (Anyone remember when Sabotage was broken as gently caress instead of just good?) I'm not arguing with your main point, but drat that is possibly the worst example to pick.

One of the most fun times I've had with this game was when I got together the friends I had played the demo week with, and we played Ghost/Cerberus/Bronze with launch stuff, and spent the whole match pretending we were scared newbies again while utterly destroying it. "Oh god it's a Phantom, run!" (Said Phantom was dead halfway through that sentence.)

What I'm trying to say is definitely do that, it's a goddamn blast.

We did some gimmick games back when, with only starting characters and weapons allowed and it was horrible slaughter of the space monster enemies anyway.

Also "The Avengers" games where the only weapon you could have was the... Avenger (on a Human character from the starter ones)! Still cut them all up on Gold.

Did a gimmick run once with only Novaguards on Gold. It worked, but afterwards we all said 'now let's never, ever do this again.'

Does anyone feel there are TOO many weapons and gear items?. At launch, there were "gaps" between characters, gear and loadouts that meant players had to specialise in one area or another, and things felt distinctive. Now it seems all homogenised and flat where any character can be a swiss army knife.
The characters definitely evolved over time. At launch, you had to work together as a team because tech powers were broken, and very few biotics could set up their own combos. Now, you have dozens of characters who can bulldoze on their own.

But honestly, although I'd love to see more players learn to work together, it's nice to not have to rely on that Paladin or Justicar or Cerberus Vanguard who never uses ANY powers at all.

Just Smash would be fine, though it might involve a boring amount of wallhacking on higher difficulties to survive. Just Lash would not go well at all on higher difficulties, and would have boring sections even on bronze or silver. If you can do everything except Charge, that'd probably be fun. Like phoenix adepts without singularity.

Oh I meant you could use every ability, but you just had to spec smash at a minimum. Whips whips whips.

Yeah it'd be bad. They have like no barriers or health, and make themselves so vulnerable during casting.

I'm pretty sure it'd wipe on gold a lot.

The Mote in God's Eye

Night before last, I experienced peak ME3.

I'm a Volus Adept with a Arc Pistol. I spin the random join game roulette wheel and get a game with two obvious pubbies, but I've gotten arrogant in my old age and I'm like "pfft, that's fine, the fourth player will be decent, I bet." We get Ghost with Cerebus, and the first few waves, everything is fine. We get a fourth player who is a total nub, but everybody manages to cover each other's back when things get tough. The other players are:

A Juggernaut with a Adas (II) and a omni-blade,
A Vorcha engineer with a Mantis X (!),
and an asari adept with a Shuriken.

I am doing pretty well - the Arc pistol and stasis is brutally effective against most Cerebus units, and with some effort we get past the second objective. I've not only gotten 75 kills but 75 pistol kills when midway through wave eight, a stasis 'd phantom steps out of stasis and sync kills me. My volus then falls out of the map, and for a second is resurrected at the rendezvous point. But no, I'm dead, and watch the rest of the round happen. Then next round, I'm still locked in spectator mode. After explaining this I watch the other player's backs, quietly figuring that there is no way that the team can make it to the next wave. They somehow muddle through, using up their entire combined rocket supply. Then, wave ten, its the crack the computer at the rendezvous point, and I'm still locked in observer mode. I figure they are doublefucked for obvious reasons, and start surfing the net, but then look back when the mission hasn't ended.

The lone survivor, the Vorcha with the Mantis, is hiding behind a box at the edge of the map. Directly in front of him two atlases and three phantoms pump fire and furiously melee a spot a few meters in front of the Vorcha. Apparently when I was killed, the game decided not to bring me back, but decided that my Volus was where it should be, though he is now invincible and invisible. As I watch, the objective verrrrryyyy sllloooowwwwllllyyyyy completes itself while the Vorcha just hides behind a crate, while all the spawned enemies concentrate on me. The Vorcha then moves to a high spot and over the next few minutes manages to kill the rest of the wave, and they are way too busy trying to kill my glitched out Volus.

They even manage to extract. On my suggestion they run to the far corner of the map, and then return to the rendezvous point, where the Volus flypaper has attracted the wraith of all the enemies has spawned. They just stand to one side of the angry mob.

PS> Despite missing some of wave 8, and all of wave 9, 10, and 11, my Volus adept still topscored

You know, a similar thing happened to me once. Funnily enough, it also involved a Volus in Firebase Ghost against Cerberus.
I wasn't playing the Volus, but I think he also died and then mystically respawned at the landing pad as an invincible ghost. Difference being he was visible.

I even happened to save the screenshot:

Can't remember if he was able to play next wave or not (been a long time), but I do remember we probably finished that objective wave thanks to those Phantoms just fruitlessly whaling on him.

It's manual, though it goes in the general direction you're aiming so if you have something highlighted it should end up close enough.

Lift, Frag, Multi-Frag, Inferno and Cluster Grenades just behave like regular parabolic grenades- (someone correct me if I'm wrong) Cluster grenades can also be bounced off walls and around corners.

If you have a class that uses Arc Grenades, tossing in the general direction is a few guaranteed kills- the AOE goes through walls. On FB Glacier, just throw it a wall when in doubt and watch the kills roll in.

Homing Grenades would need you locked on an enemy, otherwise it would just go where your reticle is when you fire it off.

In the case of the Alliance Infiltration Unit, it's more of a insta-revive medigel that you have to manage and keep active when you go tangle with a group of enemies.

For infiltrators in general, cloak then toss. It's considered a power and it multiplies the damage.

Similar toe AIU, the turians' stim packs are insta-shields that let you tank, just activate when you start taking damage to health (if you're playing conservatively) or right before you die (if you're suicidal like me).

The Talon Merc Engineer has slow regenerating grenade based powers- however, do not take concussive arrows- they screw up the the regeneration and Armor Piercing are objectively superior. The omnibow replaces your melee, so take along a melee enhancer- the bonus applies. The Cain Trip Mines are much more effective when fired at the feet of enemies, for example:

No way. One of the charms of ME3 and other games of its generation is how simple it is to throw a grenade where you want it to go. Older games I played made you eyeball it, which is drat tricky in a rendered world with an arm that's not your own.
