SORA DONALD GOOFY!

The UK back cover blurb for Cold Days has a bit more info than the US one did!

quote:

You can't keep a good wizard down - even when he wants to stay that way.

For years, Harry Dresden has been Chicago's only professional wizard, but a bargain made in desperation with the Queen of Air and Darkness has forced him into a new job: professional killer.

Mab, the mother of wicked faeries, has restored the mostly-dead wizard to health, and dispatches him upon his first mission - to bring death to an immortal. Even as he grapples with the impossible task, Dresden learns of a looming danger to Demonreach, the living island hidden upon Lake Michigan, a place whose true purpose and dark potential have the potential to destroy billions and to land Dresden in the deepest trouble he has ever known - even deeper than being dead. How messed up is that?

Beset by his new enemies and hounded by the old, Dresden has only twenty four hours to reconnect with his old allies, prevent a cataclysm and do the impossible - all while the power he bargained to get - but never meant to keep - lays siege to his very soul.

Magic. It can get a guy killed.

It might, on the other hand the easy out is that 'time operates differently in the Nevernever', and that really hasn't come into play yet despite coming up every goddamn time Harry discusses it.

When Harry attacked the Heart of Winter with Summer Fire, Maeve altered the time flow so that the Winter fae wouldn't return as quickly and it would give the Summer fae a chance to re-man the Winter/Summer battle line.

Also, in Changes Harry and Susan lose hours to the Erlking fighting the Eebs.

So it seems that Harry is going to spend a lot of time in the NeverNever, can someone remind me what did the Erlking say he would do the next time he saw Harry? I mean hes Fae so hes got to stick to his word.

I completely agree with you. I like it more when Dresden gets a chance to recoup, prepare a plan, and then ultimately stupidly brute force his way to victory as the plan falls apart. White Night style.

SORA DONALD GOOFY!

From the way the one beta reader was talking it's just a short timeframe, over a day and a half or so, not "exactly 24 hours". And I think the clock is only going to start once he gets back to our world. I mean, 77 days go by in the preview chapters alone.

Changes and Dead Beat were both less than 3 days live time.

Didn't Murphy get sacked as the result of one of these time differences? I seem to recall that.

Most of the books seem to take place over a short time period, at most it seems 2-3 days. It does make things seem rather rushed sometimes.

Benedict Jacka: Alex Verus series 1-3 (Mage who can see the future [and that's his only power] gets attacked by dark mages, solves mysteries, etc. Very similar to Dresden, except the main character doesn't get his rear end kicked as much since he can see it coming. Interesting emphasis on preparedness and the various abilities that arise out of being able to see possible futures - he never misses when he throws anything since he can find the future where he hits and just do that, he can walk through a room without being noticed since he can find a future in which everyone was looking away at just the right moment, etc.) First book "Fated".

I just picked this up because it sounded interesting and in the first couple of pages you get,

"Those of us who do like visitors have to advertise, and it’s tricky to find a way of doing it that doesn’t make you sound crazy. The majority rely on word of mouth, though younger mages use the internet. I’ve even heard of one guy in Chicago who advertises in the phone book under ‘Wizard’, though that’s probably an urban legend."

Really cracked me up.

I started the third Laundy files book last night, and the main character notes that his reading material is about a professional magician for hire in Chicago. Pretty neat seeing Harry get alluded to by other authors.

So don't. Stay here with me.

I don't get why such a big deal is being made about the supposed impossibility of killing an 'immortal'. Immortals get killed all the loving time. In fact, if a character in any medium of fiction anywhere ever is introduced as being immortal you can bet he's going to be dead before the end. Achilles, Voldemort, Sauron, Dracula, Metatron, God, Balder, on and on and on.

Good point. In fact, Harry already killed one, in Summer Knight. Aurora was a fairy queen.

However, I get the idea that it's someone on a different power scale. I'm rooting for Harry vs Santa, myself.

Actually it's because she is insane.

He covets the precious things of the shop.

I don't think Mab is actually insane, though. I think she's playing a complicated and dangerous (even to her) game, and has been from the start.

Whoever she's sending Harry after, you can bet that either (a) they're connected to the Black Council in some un-obvious way, or (b) that what she actually wants him to do is something completely different from HEY GO KILL THIS UNKILLABLE GUY FOR ME. (Or, more likely, both.)

It would be hilarious if she sent him after Nicodemus.

Small Favor makes it pretty clear that Mab is hosed up and enraged beyond anything sensible. That's why someone else had to talk for her.
