Haha, yeah, of course (still Sumire spoilers by the way):not everyone with the "dead eyes" had at one point in the past met sumire, but some of them could have. As for the "principal", you will notice that he is drawn somewhat similar as the caricature the mangaka uses to represent himself. He is literally dropping into the comic to tell his side characters to not ruin the premise

I actually questioned how to interpret that. At first I figured this meant that Sumire had touched the lives of every person who put on dead-eyes, but then I remembered the issue where the principal walked into the police station and suddenly the officer in charge of the squad had dead eyes. So either the principal somehow managed to completely convince him that it was fine in a five second explanation, or dead-eyes are like a magical disease.

I always presumed it meant that adults simply pretend to not see things that they don't want to have to deal with; a grown man with a life-size puppet pretending to be a real girl is simply so beyond the pale that they say "gently caress it, it's easier to just play along than make a scene."

Due to this thread, I finally got around to finishing Sumire 16. It was awesome. I then went to reread Sumire 17, but it seems to have never been fully translated. Is this in fact the case, or does someone know where a man might find more comics about a grown man attending high school with a puppet of a high school girl?

I just finished Sumire 16 and The Hating Girl. The former was fantastic almost the entire way through, but the latter left me pretty cold. Specifically, it was like 50 chapters of the same "she misunderstood his comment because she's socially incompetent and it offended her," or "she couldn't work up the nerve to give him something or say something to him," or a small number of other things. I'm pretty comfortable with repeating gags, but the level of stupidity required to misinterpret what the other person was saying was often times just really weird and forced. It wasn't the worst manga I ever read, but I feel it could be half as long and lose practically none of its heart. Also, the frequent "you're a girl so obviously you think this" (followed by that prediction being 100% correct) was sorta weird, especially for how many times the girl did it to herself.

My favourite chapters of Sumire-16 are the ones where she flashbacks to her elementary-school days.

They did lead me to want to know what became of the boy she was childhood friends with. I half expected him to show up at some point, so much so that after reading the series I had to look back to make sure there wasn't a random scene with the old man looking off at someone and crying or something.

There's no actual evidence for this, but I choose to believe he's the principal.

Well, the live action adaption of Sumire did not impress me after all... The acting was terrible, it was laden with cartoonish reactions that were out of place, the switch between the doll and the real actress of Sumire only served the scenes were it was difficult to use the puppet instead of being a narrative tool, and watching a man basically grabbing a girl from behind was just creepy.

Oh well...

That would be hard to imagine since the principal is so obviously much, much older than the puppeteer.

So it was your standard Japanese live action series?

It never ceases to amaze me how the live action series can come across as less realistic than their anime/manga counterparts.

This is par the course for most live action Japanese tv dramas. Even with all of their problems I still find them more enjoyable than Korean dramas but barely.

I finished up the Hating Girl last night. Overall, I enjoyed it but it's really sad the author didn't really do any other work in manga. :(

Well, there's Onani Master Kurosawa.

It's about... Lelouch as a serial masturbator I guess (it's not porn though). It's pretty :psyduck: but also quite good.

Edit: It doesn't really count as Slice of Life though, now that I mention it. The manga itself makes the comparison to The Catcher in the Rye. I just mentioned it because it's a weird rear end manga about high school kids.

I've always seen it compared to Death Note really, just that it doesn't actually turn into DBZ with autism. Has an excellent ending.

This is a great topic. Thanks, DrSunshine!

One of my absolute favorite surreal manga authors is Douman Seiman. Most of his earlier works were run in hentai magazines and were sexually explicit, but he seems to be moving away from that.

His recent work, The Voynich Hotel deals with the everyday life of residents of a resort hotel on a small desolate island in the South Pacific.

Topics covered include, in no particular order:

A luchador...

Maids...

Yakuza...

Drug dealers...

Pagan goddesses...

Cute mascot characters...

Kid detectives...

First dates...

...and Andyroid.

The first volume is complete, and the translator says more is being serialized, but he can't find any raws. It's well worth a read.

Ikigami

quote:

The japanese government has launched a brand new law: because of the lazyness and apathy of Japan's people it was decided that someone, daily and randomly, will be chosen and killed with a poisoned capsule in order to "bring to life again" and wake up the others.

The person elected will be warned with an ikigami (or death's notice) and after this he/she will have only 24 hours left to live.

What will those condemned think and do during this short time?

I'll be honest that I got started in this series and then lost track, but maybe I'll finish it now.

Maybe it's not your cup of tea, then. It's mostly just about miscommunication gags and arrow-related quirks.

Honestly, I had the same sort of reaction to Voynich Hotel, oddly enough. The art is super super cool in that one and kind of reminds me of Goodbye Mr. Despair by way of Hellboy, but I just felt it was a bit too laid back pacingwise. I kept waiting for some kind of punchline or climax and never quite got any. Oh well! v:shobon:v

Like I said earlier, I didn't care for it. It really felt like 90% of the jokes were "guy says a thing to girl, she assumes he's talking about something completely different and they carry on two separate conversations for a period of time that makes it impossible to believe no one would speak up and say 'hey, your reactions to these benign things I'm saying don't make sense, are you sure we're on the same page?'." Not to mention all the times the dude goes "man I just can't control my horney levels, time to grope or nearly assault my female friend (but something wacky happens to stop him so it's ok)," and it got really unsettling after a while, especially with how many times it ended in climax for one of them regardless.

Yeah, there are definitely some problems I can see, after reading your critiques. I mostly thought it was kind of cute, though, and didn't get creeped out or anything. Oh well, different tastes!

Is it bad enough that I should take it out of the OP? I don't want to be seen as a peddler of smut or anything! :(

Let's look at one of the classic and more beloved of the surreal daily life mangas.

Cromartie High School (Amazon.com link)

This is licensed, as is the anime, so I encourage you all to stop by a local used book store or someplace and see if you can pick up a copy. It's that good.

Takashi Kamiyama is a recently-enrolled high school student, going to Cromartie High. He's straitlaced and studious-- a model student! Unbeknownst to him, he has unwittingly enrolled in a school that's infamous for being full of badasses and delinquents! What's he to do?! Well, he takes it in stride, being quite stoic and adapting fairly well, in fact, and manages inexplicably to earn the respect of his classmates. That about does it for the plot, though, as most of it is about the various odd characters and the weird trains of thought that build from their dialogue with each other.

This is pretty notable as one of the surreal daily life mangas for the fact that Kamiyama shares his high school with a lookalike of Freddie Mercury, a robot named Mechazawa, and a gorilla. And they're all pretty much taken in stride as well. If you're a fan of delinquent mangas, this will have plenty for you, as it almost entirely revolves around parodying the super serious delinquent manga style of the 80s-- most tellingly by the fact that for a school full of badasses, they sure are inclined to banter about minutiae and seem like the most well-behaved group of Yankees ever!

It was mentioned a few posts up, but I'm going to make a serious post for Can't See Can't Hear But Love. It's not quite as absurd as some of the other stuff in this thread, but it's still pretty excellent, occasional weird translation issues aside. So what's this thing about?

Well, first off, we've got this guy, known by Sunsengnim/Teacher, on the right. He was a very successful manga author, right up until the day he became completely blind. His real name is mostly hidden. On the left is his wife, Sori. She's a hard-working, energetic, and playful woman who also happens to be deaf. The manga explores the difficulties they have in getting through their daily life, complete with a host of other characters with all their own problems.

I can't even mention any defining traits about the side characters without going into spoilers, so I won't. I'll just say that there are characters you will love, characters you will want to punch, and every single one of them has a tragic backstory that will probably make you cry.

Even the dog.

The series is still ongoing, and I highly recommend it. I don't think it's quite wacky enough for that "What the gently caress am I reading" part, but it'll definitely trigger "and why can't I stop."
