I picked up this game yesterday, knowing a only a little bit about it and having some early game tips. Today I murdered a big ol' armored boar and now I'm wearing its head. I think this game seems pretty cool.

Game mechanics question - is it possible to go to a boss arena to get your bloodstain and then retreat or do they seal off once you enter? I didn't think to try this when facing the Taurus Demon but now that I'm at the Gargoyles I want to be human to face them so I can summon NPC help. Even if it is possible it's probably easier and safer to just use one of my Humanity items but I'm curious. I was doing well on my first attempt until suddenly I was on fire. I didn't even realize there was a second Gargoyle burning me until I was dead.

DarkHamsterlord posted:None of the boss runs in this game are awful, unbearable slogs, but it seems like the worst of them are all right before problem bosses. The Capra Demon is another good example of a boss with a long boss run no matter which bonfire you're rested at (though I don't really die on him anymore, you probably will a lot on your first playthrough) This is where I am now. The thieves and dogs in the lower Undead Burg are all really annoying to have to get past. I've only made two attempts so far but I'm already dreading having to go through there every time. The second time I tried just running but... that was a really bad idea. The one time I've actually fought the demon so far he knocked me down immediately and then I was surrounded by dogs and died.

Like earlier I found a secret area down an elevator shaft with some nice treasures when I happened to notice that there seemed to be floor down where I originally thought there was just blackness.

In fact, he instantly switches to the source of the sound even in mid-swing so you can go through the fog, throw a skull/spell and take your sweet time getting up the stairs. It distracts the dogs too. Ha, that's wild. If I'd known that it probably would've cut my attempts in half since it seemed to come down to chance whether I managed to flail my way to the dogs dying or not. That said, once I finally got to fight the demon a few times by itself it was really satisfying to finally have it click into place and realize what I needed to do not to get hit. Now I'm in a sewer and got eaten by a slime thing and then cursed by some bug eyed lizards that I thought were harmless the first few times I fought 'em. Oops.

Yeah I was expecting some huge creature but seeing him rear up was really something awe inspiring. Nightmare inducing appearance aside, he's actually the first boss since the Asylum Demon that I've found easy. It still took a fair few attempts to figure him out (and apparently I can't fight a single boss without falling into a bottomless pit at least once) but once I realized I could force him to only ever use two attacks he went down really quick. Then I was so pleased with my victory that I went and ascended my sword and buffed up all my other stuff to the max I can with only regular titanite shards and went to take on the two Black Knights. They went down without too much trouble and, feeling pumped, I decided to forge right on ahead. To Blighttown I charged confident nothing would be able to stand in my way... and then a fat man stove my face in with a club.

I made another attempt at Blighttown but these fat men are really annoying so I'm thinking I might see if I feel like I'm strong enough to get past whatever that scary thing throwing lightning at me near the blacksmith was. Also I just spent 15 minutes trying to figure out how to equip a pyromancy spell before giving up and going back to a bonfire only to notice "Attune Magic".

Wow this game really starts to open up once you're strong enough to survive in multiple directions. My fear of the Fat Men in blight town led me to explore a whole bunch and now I've found like 6 different ways to remember to go at some point. Also got an awesome ring from someone I assume must be called "Havel the Rock" and now I can wear my boar helmet with impunity.

Mordaedil posted:That is literally the best ring, because it makes so many builds viable. Also, Havel is one of the hardest enemies in the game, so I think you should be ready for most everything the game can throw at you now. Like, since you've beat Havel you really ought to have no trouble with the fat men in Blighttown. I just cheesed Havel by avoiding his attacks and then smacking him once at a time. It took a while but I only died the first time. And yeah the fat men aren't so bad after all once I followed the backstab advice. Heck the gross mole men or whatever they are killed me more times with their stupid jump attack. Though I'd love to know where this shortcut is because yuck I am hating Blighttown.

I didn't really want to skip Blighttown. I don't think I can be satisfied without exploring everywhere. Anyway it doesn't sound like that shortcut would help me much regardless. I've already made it to the first bonfire and proceeded a bit further down before taking a misstep and falling to my doom. So I may as well just keep forging on rather than go all the way back around through the garden.

That ring would've been really useful if I only knew where it was. Ah well, I've made it to Queelag already so there's no sense going back. I think I've got her measure for the most part, except I haven't figured out what to do about her area attack that keeps instant killing me. I also had my first real invasion (as in not Kirk or Mildred) tonight! He kicked my rear end with giant lightning bolts and some kind of crazy super fast slashing attack. It also didn't help that he attacked me right when I got to the front of Queelag's Domain for the first time with three fat men with boulders also attacking me. It was still pretty exciting for all of the minute the battle lasted.

And there are a bunch of shortcuts that will make the later game awesome. Took me a while to figure out what you were talking about. Fake walls is a pretty mean trick. I take it there are more of these in the game?

Yeah I figured that gate was where the game wanted me to go. It's just such a loooooong walk back through Blighttown that I was hoping to find somewhere else to explore and maybe another shortcut or something. I still haven't found the path between Blighttown and the Valley of the Drakes. Is it worth searching for that down here or should I just suck it up and start climbing back up?

I'd climbed all over the water wheel area before (getting the Fire Keeper soul, etc) but somehow I'd managed to miss one ladder that kept going up. What a relief to finally get to the safety of the Darkroot Basin bonfire. That shortcut's pretty neat. If I hadn't gotten scared of the drakes when I came at it from the other end I could've gotten down to the bottom of Blighttown when I was exploring a few days ago. Though it's better this way since now I've already got Upper Blighttown totally looted and probably never have to go back there.
