A problem I was talking about with my brothers is that really there's no reason to play as gunner. You're better off taking an engineer with one type of bonus bullets that correspond to the gun you'll be manning. Otherwise you've got to be really coordinated about which gunner takes which repair tool (mallet or extinguisher) otherwise you're hosed. I think gunners could afford a buff, like +damage with all guns or something.

Granted I guess you could select the fire extinguisher as your one item you have, but then you can't fix anything. And even if someone is going to play as an engineer and man the guns, at least hop off and fix things instead of firing away like a madman as the ship crashes to the ground.

That's exactly what my friends and o figured out after two matches. Having lots of weird ammo is kind of neat but so is being able to keep the ship flying.

Have they fixed gun damage balance yet? Last time I played it was still the beta and it was horribly wonky. All the guns did almost 0 damage except for one (flak cannon?) that just took a ship down in 5 seconds.

I play gunner, and while I agree that having the ability to repair is critical I have got pretty good with knowing what kind of ammo to use in what situation. Long range, short range, and even targeting certain aspects of a ship has really changed the game for me and allowed me to damage ships a lot more effectively. I am not argueing the validity of a defensive crew, but if you have 2 good engineers on a fast small ship the dedicated dps makes a huge difference while and 1 good engineer on a gallon or spire with 2 knowledgeable gunners you can do stupid damage. While I wish that I had more then a monkey wrench when it comes to repair I am finding that to go without at least 2 ammo choices is hard for me. Porkchop, I am sorry you are having such a difficult time finding a good crew. If you ever want someone to play with hit me up in Steam. Biaga is my gamer tag. I think after I level gunning a bit (currently level 3) I will try captain. I played a few rounds on an empty ship and I just took to ramming, which resulted in a rather unexpected win. EDIT: Drunk, they must have, because I have yet to destroy a ship with a flack cannon. They do not seem to be a popular fit and my limited experience with the game has allowed me to destroy hulls and fittings with just about every other gun (besides harpoons). Just had a few game with an awesome crew in a Spire. 1 engi, 2 gunners, and a Captain the intent to reverse the entire game. because of the forward guns on the Spire it lead to 4 games of solid target kiting as ships were forced to follow in direct line of fire. Some of the most fun I have had in a while. Rarely have I seen so many rage quits from entire crews.

I'm really enjoying being a dedicated engineer. All of the captains that have half an idea of what they're doing love me on their crew.

Engineers are seriously great to have. Easily the best multi-classing class. Though I've had a couple of great captains who know when to repair. What are your in-game handles? I'm Tacks, and I'm on mic whenever I play. Add me in social.

Got this game on a whim this sale with three of my buddies and I gotta say it was a good decision. I didn't know that this type of game was exactly what I was looking for, but there it is. There's nothing more satisfying than outmaneouvering another ship and just ripping it to shreds with a punishing broadside. I usually play as captain, but the guns all got a good feel on them, albeit some of them seem really lackluster and useless. Couldn't imagine playing this solo though, as soon as you're hanging out in voicechat together and have communication and a general idea about the firing angles on your ship, you'll dominate quickly.

So I bought a four pack for me and my buddies, because the game looked great, and in practice mode it feels great. In multiplayer it's terrible, and I'll tell you why. Matches are way too fast. There's a two second cooldown on repairing the hull, but the ship can die in two seconds. If combat is going to be that fast paced, why restrict repairing to a cooldown? Matches consist of five kills each, but each kill takes about ten seconds. They take about two minutes to set up, and about one minute to play. The game is really promising, but why go through all the trouble of making awesome ships if you can't you know, actually interact with them during gameplay. As it currently stands there is no reason to be anywhere but the hull if you are the engineer. That way you can be there to smack it once before you die. The best time I had during my play tonight was actually taking the helm away from my captain and steering the ship away from combat and hiding in the clouds. At least then we could take potshots at the chaos without dying instantly. It's a shame really.

Arsonide posted:So I bought a four pack for me and my buddies, because the game looked great, and in practice mode it feels great. In multiplayer it's terrible, and I'll tell you why. Sorry, but you're wrong about a few things. A good engineer or two can keep the hull going long after it should've been destroyed, and knowing how to balance what you're doing is extremely important to that end. As a captain once, I had a game where I took more hits than I care to remember, several rams and lost the balloon 4 times(one of them involved crashing into the ground), and did not actually get destroyed once. Most of this happened with only the tiniest bit of actual hull left, but they managed to keep the armor and the balloon and engines going. I'm still not sure how they pulled it off, but it amazed me at the time. Anyways, all of the repair tools for example have their use, and I find it's best to think of repairing as a puzzle; how do you best allocate your limited resources for maximal gain, since you can repair multiple things at once with their timers(unless it's outright broken, but that's why you have the spanner). That you said there's a 2 second cooldown implies that you haven't really tried the mallet on the armor; that works much better for example(and gives you time to fix whatever else is broken). As for combat going too fast, it might be a game-mechanics problem but I see it as at least fitting in-universe; these are not really proper combat ships but more vaguely functional crafts that were put together from whatever was lying around and only mostly work.

Everybody dies quick when they're a newb. Especially if most of the people on board are newbs, and most especially if the captain is a newb. Yes, if you're getting pounded by multiple enemies you'll die quickly. But hopefully that doesn't happen too often. Play a few rounds as engineer with a good captain who know how to use the mic and you'll be in better shape.

So as a newbie captain, how do I become a not-newbie captain? I get the coordination part, now I want to make a ship that doesn't suck. My first idea for a newbie-friendly ship is a goldfish with a flak gun fore and either two gats or a gat and a flamethrower port and starboard.

Goldfish and Pyramidion are good choices for new captains. For the Goldfish I like rolling with a Hwatcha on front and flamers on either side. If you get up close you can hit and angle where both a side flamer and the Hwatcha are in range and it's just devastating. For the Pyramidion I roll with dual Carronades (often referred to as shotguns) up top, with, again, flamers on the sides. That's also an up-close ship – I have my crew focus on taking down the enemy's balloon and then keeping it suppressed until they ground out and die. It's also important to choose your pilot loadout thoughtfully. Kerosene and impact bumpers are pretty much required on a Pyramidion (assuming you're interested in ramming occasionally, which you should be cause it's great). I like the Phoenix claw on both the Pyramidion and the Goldfish since it's super useful for bringing your front guns to bear quickly. Hydrogen can be an effective escape mechanism, since it will just shoot you straight up. Honestly, just give it a go, and make sure you're on the mic. If you're halfway decent, and on the mic, eventually you'll attract crew who recognize you and will prefer to roll with a captain who's talking. That makes it a lot easier.

I like using gatlings instead of flamers. Flamers are really devastating, but gatlings are more forgiving with range, and most importantly, the piercing damage they do shreds the gently caress out of armor, as soon as the armor is down one good hwacha volley will murder them. Gatlings also means you can outrange other flamer builds.

Personally, I get the best use out of a goldfish with the heavy cannonaid on the front and rocket carousels on the sides. It's kind of a sadistic choice because that takes out the balloon pretty quickly and then I drop with them and fire the rockets to break everything else. If they try to get going again, I spin to break the balloon and by that time they're probably hitting the ground which breaks the hull pretty well.

Edit: Also, the servers are pretty drat populated now, so if that's your worry, shut the gently caress up and play.

Picked this game up during the sale. Definitely worth the money. I had a great time playing with my friend and a couple pubbies, where we somehow broke even most of the time, even dominating a few games. We were doing really well with the Hwacha/Carronade broadside combo on the Galleon. The Carronade with charged rounds seems to melt balloons, while the Hwacha seems good at destroying everything else. Though I mostly have no idea what I'm talking about still. We had problems when a more maneuverable ship got on our 6 o'clock and rode it. I'm mostly sticking to gunner for the time being, so if anyone needs a hand on their boat, hit me up as Herr in game or I GOT A MURDER BONER LOL on steam.

The Hwacha seems grossly overpowered. Am I the only one with this sentiment? It might lack for DPS but it's burst damage will just absolutely cripple an enemy ship leaving them unable to respond before your second volley.

Generally Makaris it seems that’s the feeling for most of us. The Hwacha is insane. The galleon is poo poo, the Hwacha is OP, and bots are better than pubbies. I picked up a four pack for a few goons and myself to poodle about with, and I’ve been having a shedload of fun playing this. It needs balance, but right now it has a healthy 100+ player count at almost any time of day and generally speaking is a blast with 3 other competent sailors. My only real complaint is that after checking the official forum, the devs really do come over as total arseholes (something that the last kick-starter seemed to suggest, along with their apology). Its fun, and was well worth the sale price. Id strongly suggest it to anyone who has a chuckle with team based games.

I feel the Manticore is really strong, and rightfully considered overpowered, but a bit more playing and I'm beginning to feel its constraints. It's a really good pub stomp weapon for bad pilots that aren't going to be in position consistently and therefore lets you make those handful of good approaches really count, since it only takes a moment of serendipitous positioning to out of nowhere do a truckload of damage. But when you get a better grasp on how to move exactly where you want, reliable and consistent damage is way better, doubly so if you know what systems need to be disabled when and how. Consequently, a Spire armed with Dragon / Hellhound Front, whatever port/starboard (I use two Echidna's but I don't think it matters much), is a goddamn beast. Just find a good approach and knock out their balloons in just a few shots with the Hellhound. If you need to, such as when on a direct approach with a ready enemy, aim for their most threatening gun, such as the Manticore on a Goldfish. Once their balloon goes out, swing around to whatever the enemies No-Fire zone is and proceed to sadistically take the ship apart piece by piece with no fear of reprisal. It just feels so wicked and you'll feel like such an rear end in a top hat. It's great. Same strategy works with the Goldfish, but the added Fire damage really just adds to the curb-stomped feeling the enemy experiences. For the Pilot with this build I'll tend to take Spy Glass cause you can't trust those filthy Lookouts, Tar because it's saved my life so many times, and whatever for the last slot, typically either Kerosene for the Chute Vent. Anyone planning to shoot should take Greased Rounds for the Dragon, Lesmok for the Echidna's, and Charged for the Hellhound (or maybe Burst). Editted like a million times: I hope the thread comes to life a bit more. Makaris fucked around with this message at Mar 30, 2013 around 07:19 |

I get what you're saying Makaris, but with the Hwachas high damage output and AOE you can smash most of the oppositions facing guns with a single volley. The fact is while you're right, positioning and prioritising targets is the key to success, the Hwacha does the job of any consistent damage dealer with the addition of requiring little aiming. The Goldish Mwacha/2flamers build is pretty much the first build everyone "comes up" with, and its mighty fine, mainly due to the goldfishes favourable trade-off between armor/health/speed, and its ability to sit a big ol Hwacha on the front with flamers to polish off targets once you get right up their rear. The game needs balancing, and should it receive it should be far more interesting for it. Funnily enough, my crew and I found burst rounds on the Mwacha make that AOE goodness even more silly, resulting in whole sides of a ship shutdown in a single mid-long range volley. I agree with the solid advice you've given, and would suggest it to anyone learning the ropes, but fear you have pretty much struck on one of the two/three builds that works in this game currently, with a few other contenders doing almost as well, but requiring far more skills. I dont say this as a putdown to the game, the goons i was flying with used the goldfish in the setup i mentioned for all of 2 evenings and found the wins just rolled in. edit - props on a spire build that sounds like it works. I found it made my bloody head spin. Caecitas fucked around with this message at Mar 30, 2013 around 07:46 |

I've got a build I really like, with a Goldfish with that shotgun cannon and the rocket carousel on the sides, a spyglass, bumpers and a parachute (I used the balloon to ram a lot, so I mitigate the damage as much as possible and then float gently until the balloon gets fixed). Then again, it's been a while since I played due to a bug that isn't getting fixed, so I don't know what changes have happened for the past 2-3 months.

And in my experience this game has a lot more stomps than close battles.

For any interested, this game is having a 50% sale until May 21st to coincide with their kickstarter to add an "Adventure Mode". I actually started playing this game again so I've updated the OP so it's not just a bunch of horribly outdated info. I'll add a little more to the general info and add the rest of the ships/weapons this weekend. Much to my surprise the game actually has a reasonably sized, stable population now. It can still take a while for a fresh game to get going (mostly because people get impatient and leave), but there are always rolling lobbies that just keep the matches coming. On top that the game runs WAY, WAY smoother than it did during beta and generally performs pretty well. Even better, the community is actually pretty decent. There are few douchebags and lots of helpful/fun people with mics. This is especially true on the weekend when I swear at least 25% of the online population is drinking. So if you saw this game before but weren't sure about it, or played it a while back and didn't like the bugs/incompleteness, now is a great time to try it out!
