I remember setting up multiplayer when BL1 first came out was a complete mess where I had to use tunngle or some other vpn, but when I played through it again with some friends last year we were able to do it through the base game with zero issues. Did they end up patching it or switching to some other process or something?

This feels like a silly question- how effective are grenades at higher levels?

I remember them being mostly useful for transfusion in the first game and maybe a few other things, but not really for damage. I'm thinking about maxing out all of Axton's grenade skills and just running around with an AR and grenade spamming like a mad man.

I'm looking forward to decking it out with rockets and a second gun, but am definitely curious about the nuke skill, so I might do some playing around.

On a sort of related note, I was a little bummed out to see that the commando's Do or Die skill is only a 1 point investment instead of the 5 that it seems to be on all the skill tree websites (even the official one). I guess it would be pretty nuts if it were a 5-point, but I thought I would be able to do crazy, ridiculous grenade damage, now I can only do crazy grenade damage :(

For the record, most of the game my tray has looked like- Accurate Pistol/Dart Launcher, Front-loaded DPS Shotgun, Crit-bonus or elemental Sniper, Elemental or high-damage bullet hose. And I've probably used the first two weapons on there the most.
Right. I guess I should just get out of the BL1 class specific weapons mindset. I have been using a shotgun, but I'm weary about how that's gonna work out in a couple levels when things start to really kick my rear end.

Can anyone who's levelled him a bit comment? Is he better this time around, or should I just go for Maya?
As other people pointed out, Axton is very, very good and a huge improvement over Roland. He unfortunately lost all the support parts of his class but he makes up for it in some steady, heavy DPS and good survivability. His turret can more than handle itself, although it can get a little shaky towards the end of pt 2 if you don't spec into giving it some defensive stuff like the Longbow skill or just babysit it.

Turret aside, Axton is incredibly capable of throwing down massive damage on his own if you max out his damage skills like Impact, Onslaught, Duty Calls and Battlefront and can grab a good class mod. He's also got some great grenade skills like Steady and Do or Die that can really up the already ridiculous grenade damage in the game.

With those two things in mind, I've found great success in tediore-reload grenades as they can do absolutely bullshit burst damage if you have an almost full clip.

* My commando has points in the -shield recharge delay and +recharge rate skill - is there any reason to ever use anything other than a turtle shield? Shield damage is mechanically the same as health damage as far as I can tell, but the shield recharges much, much faster.
I've been running into similar thoughts about shields with Axton. I found a purple Turtle shield that had a 60k capacity and good recharge/recharge delay and have had a really tough time not using it. Shields in general regenerate much more quickly than health, so 9/10 times I would go with a shield and whatever would give me the biggest combination of shield and hp, not even taking into account the commando skills.

Right now I'm using a 70k shield with a lower recharge and recharge delay, but I can take 100k points of damage and recharge that 70k very, very quickly. The only thing that really fucks me over is when I get hit with an electric attack from a constructor or Saturn, so just have to be careful in situations like that.

* Is there a go-to Commando build I should be using? At the moment I've gone down Guerilla and will probably head down Gunpowder to Longbow, but I'm happy to switch if something else is better.

It works well with either Assault Rifleman class mods or Grenadier class mods (specifically Master or Impactful) and tediore reloading depending on if I want to do burst damage or a more balanced/ammo conservative run. The one point in grenadier I move around, but prefer it there just cause I'll come across a mod that gives it +5 which is nice.

I asked this earlier, but I think it got lost in the shuffle: I'm wondering if the +grenade damage from Grenadier mods will affect Tediore reload explosions more than the +magazine size from Veteran mods. I have a Veteran mod, but no Grenadier mod to compare it with.
Definitely agree about Sentry and Laser Sight.

I am about to do a lot of math that could very well be incorrect, so if it is, call me out on my poo poo.

I believe that +grenade damage stuff is applied to the total Tediore throw making the calculation

code:
(Gun damage with all skills applied) * (Bullets left in clip) = (Tediore grenade) * (Grenade damage modifiers)
   = Total damage
With that in mind, mock items:

code:
Tediore smg (1000 damage, 30 bullets)
Grenadier mod (+6 steady, +5 impact +30% grenade damage)
Veteran mod (+6 steady and +30% mag size)
Each mod has +6 steady just for max amount of tediore reload goodness so if you have 5/5 already (which you definitely should), it would provide 11/5 which is 55% grenade damage increase.

The only skills I'm factoring in here are impact and steady as the Grenadier class mod can be a +6 steady and +5 impact which can occasionally make a difference, so our calculation is

Veteran Mod
code:
(Gun damage + impact%) * (Bullets left in clip + mag size%) = (Tediore grenade) + steady
   = Total damage

Grenadier Mod
code:
(Gun damage + impact%) * (Bullets left in clip) = (Tediore grenade) + steady + grenade damage %
   = Total damage
with the Veteran mod having an additional + in bullets left in clip and Grenadier having an additional + grenade damage% after steady.

The reload after one shot would be:

Veteran mod:
code:
((1000 + 200) * (29 + 8.7)) = 44400 + 24420 = 68820
Grenadier mod:
code:
((1000 + 450) * 29) = 42050 + 23127.5 + 12615 = 77792
So, with this setup, Grenadier mod wins by a good bit.

Overall, you need to hit a good balance of survivability and damage instead of just straight DPS like you would Terra or Hyperius, though I would personally lean towards speccing to survival and just having good weapons.

We had a completely mixed party of siren, gunzerker, assassin and myself as commando. I went all the way into the survival tree on the commando for 5/5 Grit and then put on a class mod that added another +6 to it and had some health regen, which saved my life literally 10 times in a row within maybe 3 or 4 seconds several times throughout the night. Grit is no joke. I was also using a big rear end turtle shield and a health relic.

Vinestalk covered the strategy, but we were able to pull it off as we figured out how the boss worked (which took us maybe 10-15 times in a row from "he's not taking damage" to "Oh, that's how"). We didn't execute everything perfectly, but when you know what to do and how to stay alive, it's not too tough, just have to stay in the rhythm of things. Hell, about halfway through the final fight, the siren and assassin went down leaving myself and the gunzerker, but we were still able to pull it off, so it's not impossible.

Also, on the strategy that Vinestalk wrote-
Singularity grenades are really helpful, but they can sometimes throw Gee past the pool, so you have to position them just right so he's dragged just into it.

Ahahaa, I wish I had your problems. I typically play with a friend and we've gone through the game to lvl 50 twice. The first time with me being Zero and him being Axton while the second time I was Salvator and he was Gaige. Now the first time before the Mechromancer add-on came out when we'd open it up we'd almost 85% of the time get Salvators, once in awhile a Zero or an Axton. This second time though. Ugh. Probably 99.9997 percent of the time it's all Gaige. Gaige and that god damned rear end in a top hat kill stealing when you're in FFYL robot Deathtrap. I've had Deathtraps refuse to follow the Gaiges around but follow me instead, dicking around till I die then they spring into action to get that last bit of health totally denying me the life saving kill. Not enough stairs to protect me from that loving rear end in a top hat-bot.
Christ, playing with Mechro's loving blows. Just excuse after excuse for stealing your ffyl's and refusal to quit out of games instead of running back through an area because "my anarchy :qq:"
