Halo 2 and Earth.
ODST and everything
Reach and what we were led to believe reach was from the previous 4 games.

Gonna have to get more specific here.

How about the whole "this game is a bunch of mini missions, scattered around a vacant city". I'm sure I read somewhere that it was going to be the Halo 2 that we never got (you know, the one set on Earth), but it turned out to be the mini-mission thing.

quote:

Reach wasn't really mentioned much in the previous four games besides extremely vague "the Covenant kicked our poo poo in at Reach" and some "REMEMBER REACH" graffiti around New Mombasa in ODST. What exactly are you talking about here?

Reach was implied to be this massive base-world, one of the last bastions of humanity. Giant crushing loss and all that. Save for a few small sections (where you're flying over the city for example) the entire thing felt like you were fighting for a few farms and there was no real gravity to any of it except for when your squad-mates died.

quote:

Edit: wait, weren't you one of those morons who convinced himself ODST was going to be "not a Halo game" by hyping himself up on baseless speculation from other morons and then were pissed that it was, in fact, a Halo game?

That did the trick.

Game is fantastic and I can't believe I'm torn between playing the campaign or playing the multiplayer.

The spartan credits thing seems a little limiting. You only get one per level right? It seems that there's far too much to unlock with such a little payout.

Also, what's the deal with those specialisation things. It says to complete one before getting access to the other. Does that mean hitting rank/level 60 or whatever with each one?

edit: also, has a euro/uk metatag been made yet?

Well, one game of Spartan ops netted me 3000 exp and I didn't think I did all that well, plus you don't have to deal with some asinine competitive bullshit so it looks like a nice casual way to go about unlocking stuff (except the multiplayer only stuff that requires you to "master" all game modes :/)

If a team owns all the bases the game goes into sudden death mode. The team with no bases stops respawning and must capture a base before they all die.

It's basically a more feature rich version of Domination from CoD. And by feature rich I mean each "base" spawns vehicles and defence turrets.

I love it.

What I miss though is Invasion, or a more advanced version of it. I've been itching for a true Quake Wars:ET/Brink/Battlefield:Rush/Unreal Tournament 2003:Assault mode in Halo for years and Invasion was kind of a step towards that.

It's never fully explained.

I just chalked it up to "no species harmonious in its beliefs". We saw that the covenant was formed of differing species and each had slightly different views on the Forerunners (although most believed that they were deities).

The prologue video on Waypoint indicates that a Forerunner told them to come here though so presumably Requiem sent out some kind of signal or something to do with the rings resulted in a message being sent out that the "True Believers" followed.

Also, what's the name of that map in multiplayer that's a remake of one that's been in almost all the halo games. The giant grassy one with cliffs on either side that's too big for any game mode that's less than 10v10 and is always full of people that do nothing but snipe at eachother across the map?

Because I think we should send a petition to 343 to remove the loving thing. It's shite.

Ragnarok at least has a middle section where it's somewhat easy to hide from snipers. Once you learn where to go it's usually pretty easy unless you are playing against a full organized group (which is rare for this size) in which game you'll get stomped. Basically stay away from the creek, ideally on the opposite end of the map from it, and you'll be fine.

So because the map is bad, don't use certain parts of it?

Lets just not use the shite map.

I said come in! posted:

I didn't say that at all. The map isn't the problem. There being certain parts of it that make it really good for snipers does not make it a poo poo map. There are plenty of ways to avoid the snipers if you are capable of being self aware of your surroundings, if not then there's nothing a well designed map is going to do for you, that's your problem.

You literally said "basically stay away from the creek". Which says to me, stay away from a large part of the map or you will just die.

Why would I want to play on a map where I can't use an area of it due to people looking for the laziest way to get kills?

Then you have issues with king of the hill because it's 5v5 and the map is far too big for that in addition to the vehicles that ruin it.

Overpowered scorpions have been replaced by overpowered mantis' that gently caress you if you're within eyesight of them. And with the entire map pretty much flat and open, it's a never ending barrage of sniper/battle rifle/DRM's that pick you off from across the map wherever you are. So even if you happen to get your hands on a rocket launcher/spartan laser, expect a sniper bullet to pop you the moment you fire it.

It's basically an endless chain of the irritating kind of deaths. I.e. the ones where you don't see the guy that killed you.

I think 343 really wants to explore this, especially with the Didact claiming humanity is the greatest threat to the galaxy and how dangerous we'd be with the Mantle.

I think it's to do with suddenly shoehorning in book elements to a game series that barely addressed it. Resulting in a sudden shift from "Good Military fighting for survival" to "Space Assholes".

Edit: If GAME is anything like Gamestop, you can pretty much "pre-order" until something like 8PM Monday evening and pick the game up four hours later at midnight.

GAME went belly up months ago and is a horrible poo poo filled shell of itself propped up by the corporate buyover from the company that own Currys.

As such almost all of their stores closed across the UK. So if it was a pre-order bonus from them, most people in the UK had no-chance of getting it.

It was a poorly implemented plan with no detailed information for it available online. In fact the only rumblings of it were about everyone getting it before the X date until a few days before that, when it changed to "everyone" (in the US only).

Why?

No-one has any loving idea because they've only issued some PR laden dribble about a "milestone".

I've already noticed a drop off in Euro goon players and i expect this to get worse across the board as more people close in on that easy to reach level cap.

Colour me surprised that people flock away from Battle Rifle Floaty Shooter™ when one of the few interesting things about it comes to a screeching halt.

Halo's multiplayer is pretty shallow, especially when the public userbase seem to gravitate to making every single game's combat play out in exactly the same way.

There aren't that many people who are into using forge to make their own fun in the game, not when the public playlists shouldbe doing that for them. So I don't blame people for migrating away to other more interesting games when the personal unlock stuff runs out.

On top of that, as has been said, it's an arbitrary cap that pretty much just ruins the whole commendation/challenge system.

Funkmaster General posted:

Picking the best connection from a spreadsheet of everyone's latency, NAT, and upload speed isn't difficult or time consuming. Compiling said list is.

You don't just advertise your upload speed; to get an accurate measurement you need to, you know, upload some stuff. And the game has to test that for everyone in the match to pick the best host.

And then you can't just choose the guy with the best upload speed, because no matter how great your up speed is, if you have a poor connection to the other players in the game it's still going to be leggy. The guy in New Zealand with amazing speed shouldn't host the game where everyone else lives in Canada.

Then consider that there isn't a person doing these tests and selecting a result. Someone has to write the code to instruct the game to take these actions. The slightest mistake with that code could make the whole thing stop working, take too long, or behave erratically. And mistakes in code are rarely glaring and obvious. Debugging can take as much time as ( and often more time than ) writing it in the first place.

I'm not saying it doesn't need work, but again, just saying "GEEZ I SHOULD HAVE BEEN HOST, THIS ISN'T COMPLICATED" is absurd.

You're uploading your positional data all the time while playing (that's how other players know where you are and what you're doing).

The idea you have of things not working efficiently because "coding is hard" is a bit of a weird one. These are a huge team of professional developers, not basement monkeys. If efficient netcode was beyond the abilities of the 343 devs then it should have been given to someone else to produce. Or, at the very least, given to someone who thought that minutes of time being passed for a host reselect when anyone drops was unacceptable.

There are games that use matchmaking which don't take a ridiculous amount of time to select a new host when one drops out. It's not an impossible feat.
