Honestly, a sports RPG would be completely amazing. Some kind of rollerball/bloodbowl style futuresport, and you can build some interesting turnbased mechanics focuswed around that one thing, while having a really unusual angle for a plot, full of underhanded skullduggery, and the relatively limited venues could let you run the budget relatively low

I don't get all the poeple saying they're sick of fantasy. Sometimes you just want to hit an Elf over the head with a big fuckoff hammer.

al-azad posted:Why do people think fantasy automatically equals Medieval Europe with elves and poo poo? Yeah, that's the go-to setting but I would love an Arabian Nights theme or swords-and-planets Barsoom style with interplanetary travel and encounters with aliens. There are a ton of "fantasy" themes completely unexplored in video games and I would take any of the alternatives, even esoteric settings like Planescape. Because for every Dark Souls there's a billion Forgotten Realms ripoffs. With names like Nightwood and Godhammer Citadel we're well on our way.

Speaking of Greyhawk, Temple of Elemental Evil used that setting, generic as balls, but the art-work and general atmosphere somehow stripped it of a soulless generic quality. More often than not it's the presentation and art-design rendering these games tedious. Seeing a videogame with good art design is like seeing a midget riding a monkey, sure, there's probably more than one out there but it's still a rare catch. Dr. Video Games 0031 posted:Because for every Dark Souls there's a billion Forgotten Realms ripoffs. With names like Nightwood and Godhammer Citadel we're well on our way. This is funny to me, because Dark Souls and Demon's Souls were very Arthurian fantasy, slanted in that odd Dark Ages style that gave it a bit of grimness and grounded taboo. The whole knights in shuffling armor with shutters and mages in dorky robes groveling underground while fighting creepy zombies and balls-out terrifying monsters is a very Arthurian slant, which is a distinct breed from that of typical High-Fantasy. Grounded Arthurian fantasy would not be a bad thing to me. But that's Britian and whatnot, not "Godhammer" or whatever. See the failed Lionheart: Legacy of the Crusader for an example of something that would be fantasy but actually sport a unique interpretation and Arthurian slant. Space-Pope posted:Of course not. Baldur's Gate 3 is going to be made by Bioware. It will feature console-friendly action combat, even more characters to gently caress than Dragon Age 2, and Minsc will now be a woman whose VA works for Gamespot. On its way out the door, when its revealed to be garbage, people will complain on forums. Game journalists will respond by telling you that you didn't really have fun playing the original games, anyway. If there is a BG3 - maybe Bioware will up it a notch and allow the main character to have really steamy sex with Imoen and Minsc at the same time, all the while shoving miniature giant space hamsters up their rear end.

I kind of hope that its some sort of apocalyptic insane fantasy world. I think that fantasy in a non-LOTR universe would be great. I'm getting a Planescapey vibe from some of the snippets of lorey stuff they've been posting. Also I am buying that bag.

I'd love love love it if it was a fantasy setting ala the Wizardry series. Very loosely fantasy with spaceships, aliens, robots, and guns. Meanwhile you're throwing fireballs and swinging swords too. I just love Wizardry, sorry. More IPs need to have multi-game plots that allow save file transfers, while still being self contained.

These count-downs are always terrible, every now and then it's Diablo 3, but almost every other instance it's a Baldur's Gate HD re-release with loving DLC for a fourteen year old game.

You know what, gently caress this. I hate when developers are teasing a teaser for a game that isn't even completed. I know that this isn't the first time that something like this happened (Baldur's Gate remake, some MGS sequel, Portal 2 etc.) but it's really stupid and annoying. Just show the loving teaser/trailer already. poo poo, it probably won't even be a teaser - it will be just a simple website with the logo of the new game and the year 2013. Announcing an announcement, jesus christ. edit: I guess I should proably quit being mad about video games

Meanwhile you're throwing fireballs and swinging swords too. Meanwhile, I see that list and think "I've got JRPGs for that." I can scarcely think of one that doesn't have an anachronistic piece of tech somewhere--usually robots or flying vessels. I recognize the differences, of course, but simply having aliens and robots in a fireball and sword RPG feels like a kitchen sink kind of thing to me. Wizardy had a huge impact on the JRPG consciousness, after all. And even Ultima had spaceships--it just kind of forgot after a while. I'm totally with you on save-file transfers, though. I do dig that. I must admit I have a preference for low and dark fantasy, and have yet to have my fill. Dark Souls and the Witcher hit the mark pretty well, but you can't have conversations in Dark Souls and you can't be anyone but Geralt in the Witcher. If someone can make a game that mixes the two, I'm game.
