I think I've swapped with half the regulars at this point, so it might be a good idea to have some special mixes set aside to avoid repeats.

I've never participated in one of these before, but I love music - especially weird music - and so I think I'm in this time 'round! email : thatdamnsatyr@gmail.com Location : North Carolina, United States Number of Partners : Just one, please! Willing to ship internationally? : Absolutely! It's only like $1 more or something, anyway. Will review the mixes you get : I'm pretty slow, but I'll definitely try to post general thoughts and impressions for my swaper, if not individual track reviews (as long as there's not 100's of tracks, like an MP3 CD or something!) Whether you want to be notified by e-mail when these occur: Sure, sounds cool! Don't know how much it matters, but my car plays MP3 / data-file encoded CD's, so whoever gets me can, in fact, feel free to send tons of music and it'll definitely get listened to. =)

So what's involved in a mix anyway? It's just random songs you like right? You guys are making it seem more involved for some reason.

appropriatemetaphor posted:So what's involved in a mix anyway? It's just random songs you like right? You guys are making it seem more involved for some reason. It's not all that complicated. The only two "ironclad" rules are: 1. Send at least one audio CD with music 2. Include a legible tracklist so people know what the gently caress they're listening to That's about it. Everything else is just recommendations (cover art, what kind of songs to send, etc). Why are people getting so involved about it? Well, certain people really get excited about the process and enjoy the prospect of not only sharing the music they love with a stranger but also receiving some interesting new music in return. What's wrong with that?

You can put whatever you want on a mix. Alot of the obsessive work people (including myself) put into to these don't really amount to that much. I obsess over making sure that one track flows into the next and cringe when I have to make due with a sloppy transition yet I'm pretty sure no one has ever cared ever in all the mixes I've made. Just put music that you think it good on a CD and that should be enough. The amount of love you put into it is up to you. Also, stop the talk about preferring digital and stuff. CDs are light and don't cost alot to send at all. Generally it'll cost you $3 to send a CD within your own country and like $5-$8 to send outside. This isn't really a huge expense here. I make and exception for someone like Webdog because he apparently lives in the middle of the rear end end of nowhere and the postal system is awful so if you have an excuse like that, let me know, but generally you should expect to spend a little (emphasize little) money to send these. edit: CDs usually are 80 minutes but most burners won't let you use every second of that. I've learned that the hard way

Just put music that you think it good on a CD and that should be enough. The amount of love you put into it is up to you. That's pretty much it. I honestly don't think people would get "mad" at the order of your CD or anything. That'd actually be kind of a lovely thing to say, and if some goon gets all upset because you put a song by, like, Radiohead on there...well, gently caress them. But I think certain people will appreciate if you go out of your way to do extra stuff, such as including lesser-known songs they might not've heard before, or having a nice flow to the mix, or having a cool cover art. It's up to you how far you want to take it. quote:Also, stop the talk about preferring digital and stuff. CDs are light and don't cost alot to send at all. Exactly. In most cases sending a CD isn't at all hard to do. Plus the point of this whole excersise is to send a mix. It shouldn't just be a random collection of songs you think are kinda cool. Forcing you to limit it to the size of a CD will make you pick and choose, and put a little thought into it. I'd rather get a curated set of 20 songs than a randomly chosen set of 200, you know? quote:edit: CDs usually are 80 minutes but most burners won't let you use every second of that. I've learned that the hard way The reason is that most audio burning software will automatically add a second or two of silence between the tracks. So if you have 21 tracks, that could be 20 seconds of silence, meaning the max you could fix would be 79 minutes and 40 seconds. It's best not to fret too much over having an exact amount. Try to undershoot and you'll be fine. Some people don't even fully fill the CD; I've gotten mixes before that were only like 50 minutes of 15 songs. As long as the songs are good, I don't feel gipped or anything.
