What are the current rumors? Even to be proportional to the difference between Wii and the rest of 7th gen, they'd have to have at least 5GB. At that point it's diminishing returns because no game yet created has used that much RAM, even on PCs where configurations with 16GB are common on high-end gaming machines.
Last I saw was something like 2-4GB for the PS and 6-8GB for the Xbox...with half reserved for the OS, the whole media hub thing PaletteSwappedNinja mentioned above. I think PS is supposed to have a stronger GPU though.

Whatever the case the Wii U will be out in two months while the others won't be out for another year+ and ultimately nothing is actually confirmed about them at this point, so I'm not caring too much about those right now. Either way the Nintendo system is default for me for Nintendo stuff, and hopefully better Japanese support a la Platinum this time around.

Worst case I buy another system again, which could be a while cause I'm weird. I didn't get a 360 until late 2009 I think, that was pretty much for Trials HD when the 360 dropped to $199. Most of my 360 library is Sega arcade games and Cave shooters, then Platinum, Capcom, and a few other outliers.

It's all graphics memory (GDDR) for the whole system. And I guess if it's all on a single system on a chip ("SoC") design more memory might increase the die size (or denser memory parts) which would increase the cost of production. Hell if I know costs, but small savings add up over millions of consoles and over the life of a production run as costs can get reduced.

Well to be honest I still don't see what the big deal about UE4 is; some of the new stuff they showed in the tech demo looked like it had no practical application to gaming.

Typically new engines are more about helping developers work smarter and faster, so developers may still want to use it. I have no idea what the license cost will be for UE4 vs UE3.

But of course Epic will put UE4 on Wii U because of the royalties/license fees they collect. Seems to me like the kind of money you can make on engine licensing is fuckin' nuts.

e: on second thought that unintentional pun looked too intentional, I'm takin it out
Well there was a separate video about the development side of things, with the usual "this and this is easier and faster" type of things. As for the Wii U, take this with a mountain of salt (he's a confirmed dev). It'll be interesting to see how much traction UE other licensed engines get next generation cause it seems like a lot of the bigger devs have their own engines these days. CryTek has had theirs running on Wii U (speculation is that it's for Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2) but I'm not sure they're expected to be a big player like Unreal has been in the past.

I guess what could win people over to Nintendo Network will be if the social features are really on-par or better than the current consoles.

Between the current consoles, only XBox and Vita have cross-game-chat. WiiU promises cross-game-chat too. Messaging in PS3 is basic, on Vita is slightly better, but there is almost no community on PSVita for enjoying messaging and chat.

One hope about the tablet: the fact you'll be able to share drawings will make the WiiU not only the platform where you will be able to send drawings of penises inside jokes about dogs not saving people trapped in pits, but probably also strategies, invitations... Swapnote is limited because it's still not game-based, Miiverse instead looks like a good fit for this.

"Our monster hunting strategy: you get eaten by Rathalos, while we kill him."

But probably this is all wishful thinking, and everyone will just spam pics zooming on tits like on Steam hubs.

In any case, Nintendo has to allow a friend list bigger than 100 units... or at least the possibility to login with different profiles on the console.
I'm hoping for that in game message board looking thing they showed right before E3, but yeah wishful thinking and all that. Otherwise my main wish is a better version of communities from MK7, instead of adding a bunch of goons for some game one at a time just have a single code to join the group.

I think the extra ten bux this generation is due to the increased costs of making HD games. So theoretically that is a one time cost increase, that is until they start releasing 4k games.
Costs have always increased just by the nature of inflation alone, thankfully games stayed around $50 as long as they did.

And I imagine 4k support will be like 1080p support was this generation. Hell keep in mind what John Carmack said a few months ago:

quote:

If you take a current game like Halo which is a 30 hertz game at 720p; if you run that at 1080p, 60 frames with high dynamic frame buffers, all of a sudden you've sucked up all the power you have in the next-generation
I wouldn't be surprised if devs go for 720 (or sub 1080 like many of today's sub 720 games) to cram more prettiness in rather than use more power up on the increased resolution.

Yeah, I'm stoked for this too, but I'm also a 007 nut. The graphics really aren't stellar, but whatever. From the looks of it, it's running on the same engine as Goldeneye 007: Reloaded, which was just an enhanced port of the original Wii engine, which itself was originally designed for Dead Space: Extraction. So yeah, it's basically running on Wii tech from 2009 with a few HD bells and whistles added.

Based on Goldeneye for Wii, I have hopes it will be solid enough to be a treat for Bond fans. Each of the six missions is based on a film from one of the six Bond actors, ending with Skyfall. I'll honestly play it just to see how well they Craig-ify some of the classics (ooh boy, Die Another Day is gonna be a tough one). Goldeneye had pretty addictive online play, too, so I imagine they'll build on that.
I'm a sucker for the old Goldeneye/Timesplitters gameplay style (plus a 007 fan) so if it plays anything like that I'll probably get it. Well I want remote aiming too cause I hate dual sticks in comparison, that's probably the main reason I haven't bothered with FPSs on 360 (along with not really caring for most of the ones that came out to begin with).

From some searching around it sounds like Reloaded either used a new engine (according to Activision) or a modified CoD one (according to widespread random internet speculation), and I guess the Wii game was ported to that and gussied up.

Other than the map and off TV mode for the gamepad, there's rear view, weapon cam, or opponent cam if you want to see what someone else is seeing. For local multi, other than the 5 player splitscreen+gamepad racing, there's also two asymmetric modes added for the Wii U version:

Well, they can see you but they don’t know where you are [there are no arrows]. You have to basically smash into them, and if you smash into them they become a Shinobi too. Then you, as the master Shinobi, can tap on one of the remaining players’ heads, and when you do that a big red arrow appears above them.

And someone on LinkedIn apparently leaked something, the profile is edited now I guess, but according to that thread it used to say: "Working for Straight Right on a short term contract, porting a triple-A Square Enix game to the yet-to-be-released Wii U platform." I'd be surprised if there's any support for stuff outside of the commercial streaming services and I guess SD/USB if they continue just a bit with what they did on Wii and 3DS.

On the plus side they've made 3D models for nearly everything it seems, and they've at least dabbled in 3D for a game with Harmo Knight. Then there's stuff like Layton and the new Phoenix Wright showing nice 3D cel shading getting pretty close to the 2D art, so who knows. That said I sort of don't see a big console one happening for the whole portable friendly gameplay reason someone mentioned earlier.

I haven't played a Pokemon game since Gold/Silver, but I would play the hell out of a proper 3D Pokemon RPG. Use cel-shading! Hell, use 2D sprites on a 3D world like the Breath of Fire games (I know there are others, I just can't recall them).
Doesn't Black and White or the previous one do just that? (I just remembering being surprised at the overworld stuff being 3D way back)

That controller acting as the screen when someone else wants to use the TV is a very nitche function at best.

Most people have DVR boxes to record things or hulu to watch stuff on their computer or consumer electronics device. Not only that but a lot of American Households have multiple televisions allready. The Wii-U is certainly no budget console either. So the people who can afford it, the majority have all/most of these things.
It's actually what I'm looking forward to most, and pretty much why portables have gotten more play from me. It's not really the same as multiple TVs in a household since it doesn't require people to split up to do the different activities (the whole "together alone" thing). It's more analogous to having multiple TVs in the same room, or just whatever portable devices (games, phones, tablets, etc) along with the TV.

^^^Did they ever follow through with that "3D Classics" thing for 3DS? I'd happily support "HD Classics" on the Wii U eShop.
Not sure what they originally announced, but yeah there's 3D Classics for download on the eShop, so I've been hoping for HD Classics or whatever for Wii U too. Here's one of the more :psyduck: choices they've chosen for the 3D conversion: Urban Champion.

For some new news, apparently Tekken's Japanese site mentions a small discount for the digital download, 6280 vs 6980 yen, as well as size, 16.7GB (around the same as the PS3 version according to NeoGAF). That works out to be right around 10% off, no clue if that has anything to do with the Nintendo Network Premium deal you get (I think that was for some sort of credit back rather than a discount).
