So the NHL is dead for the next year probably. You should watch college hockey! But DJExile, why should we watch college hockey? Because there are motherfucking space bears destroying the earth. Because Johnny Gaudreau scored one of the prettiest goals ever last year in the national championship. Because all the chants own. Because there will probably be another 2 or 3 outdoor games. Because a lot of talent will stay in the college ranks since the NHL is dead. Because there's no Gary Bettman. Because tickets are pretty cheap. What happened last year? Short version: BC stomped everyone, behind a retardedly good Power Play along with world-class goaltending, and hammered Ferris State in the finals. So who should be the good teams this year? Here's the Inside College Hockey Top 10 for 2013: 1: Minnesota (WCHA) 2: Michigan (CCHA) 3: North Dakota (WCHA) 4: Union (ECAC) 5: Western Michigan (CCHA) 6: Boston College (Hockey East) 7: Cornell (ECAC) 8: Wisconsin (WCHA) 9: UMass Lowell (Hockey East) 10: Notre Dame (CCHA) Minnesota and Michigan will be deep as hell this year and both should make good runs. The North Dakota [CENSORED] have some transfers from Alabama-Huntsville, who sadly was dropped to club level last year. BC constantly loses kids to the pros but Jerry York is pretty much God and will reload the team full of small guys who are fast as hell. This will be the last year of existence for the CCHA, because Bowling Green is finally going to be better Exhibition games will start in October! Talk about how

I'm always vaguely aware that the Gophers exist, but I had no idea they actually won anything. Probably just residual from all our other sports teams never winning anything. If there's no Wild this year, I guess I know what I'm watching!

Correction: Penn State is going varsity this year, 2012-13, playing as an independent team in the old Ice Pavilion. Next year, 2013-14, is the start of a Big Ten Hockey Conference, completion of the Pegloo, Penn State joining the BTHC, etc.

BC should be good but not to the level of recent years. Kind of a "duh" statement I know. Gonna enjoy the last season of the WCHA. Looking forward to road trips to St. Cloud and Mankato for the away games. It's nice having road trips that are within 2 hours driving distance. I also know a bunch of people go to Houghton for the Tech series though I probably won't be doing that one. I think the Big 10 has potential for success and enjoyability as well but I'm definitely going to miss some of the current rivalries and road trips.

The strange geometry of the ceiling tends to create some really interesting effects with the sound. If you notice in the upper right, that balcony hanging over the ice is the student section. Our voices funnel directly down onto where the opposing goalie plays. You can hear just about anything said up there perfectly from the ice surface, which makes for some some prime chanting. The band is also up there, which is pretty awesome. If you ever have a chance to come up you definitely should. The only downside is that some seats near the corners have obstructed view, due to the weird ceiling. E: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DS--tye95gg CBS college sports feature on Alfond. Went to a handful of games last year and the Ice Pavilion has a pretty good atmosphere even for the club team. Hopefully they win at least a few games this year against the likes of Huntsville and American.

Since the Kohl Center is used for basketball and hockey, Wisconsin hockey has always practiced off-campus at (I believe) the Alliant Energy Center. Until this year. There's a new facility going up next to the Kohl Center, La Bahn Arena, for hockey practice and women's hockey games. I got tickets to the first game, and I have no idea what to expect out of it. Two best players and both goalies just graduated and one of their two best freshman skipped town to join the Maple Leafs because he's a jackass. They recruit well and have a good coach so they're always dangerous, but they're not quite as dominant as they were 3-4 years ago. They're going to be okay, they'll make the tournament as a 2 or 3 seed, unless they somehow manage to win the CCHA tournament, which is a statistical impossibility.

I'm going to follow the poo poo out of this tread this season. Last year I went to my first college hockey game (The Beanpot Final) and I'm addicted now. BG hammered Ontario Institute of Technology 9-1 in an exhibition match. Not exactly a world-class opponent but did learn a few things: 1: We aren't going to out-size anybody this year. It's still a young and relatively small team, and Chris Bergeron seems to value speed over size in his recruiting. Still, even most of our defenders aren't exactly the biggest guys. 2: The special teams look very good. 2 short-handed goals and 3 on the power play. Granted not against a great opponent but it's good to see everyone clicking early in the season. 3: Passing is gorgeous. I suppose that's to be expected when you graduated like 2 people after last season but it's still great to see. 4: I guess Canada doesn't require full face cages for their college/university leagues. I actually didn't even notice the whole team was in visors until like halfway through the first. 5: Our new sweaters own. 6: Hockey owns.

That being said, other than my first few months here, I have no knowledge of Collegiate Hockey. Either way, I'll be joining the team to Michigan and Notre Dame in January, really excited for that. I think our team is going to have a better season than the media suggests. Our freshman class is very solid, if we can just get some solid goal tending I believe we have a chance of making a deep run in the CCHA*. * I don't know anything about the other schools.
