To be fair it is worth noting its still in beta so its going to get patched on a regular basis etc for now.

I know it's a bit poo poo but unfortunatly that's how it is right now.

It's understandable that patching is a part of beta. I was also kind of confused why they had to patch directly after installation though. Even if you don't want to make a whole new installer, they couldn't roll the patch download into the initial download to install it? But yeah, :beta: so I guess it's not a big deal.

I think this game has a lot of potential. I haven't been this excited about an FPS since I played C&C Renegade. That was a while ago.

It's still pretty slow even with wired connection though. I usually spend an hour downloading a big patch, and I have a good wired connection.

Sometimes you also get on a lovely server while on a wired connection so restart your PS3 and you might get lucky with the server lottery to get a faster one. I've never had problems while wired but others have said this works.

Oh look, our fav site did an article on me.

I just poked around that site to figure out what the gently caress it's about.. And it's a loving joke. All it is, is articles about who's going to be the best corp in Dust. They actually have homegrown ranking about who they thing will be #1 and "secret leaked documents" from other corps. How can this even be a thing yet? The game's still in beta. A good number of these corps are going to rise, fall, and be buried before we even come close to getting a real release, and then they'll have to deal with the onslaught of pubbies, and certainly a number of them will be able to form a cohesive group or two.

I can't believe this actually happened to me. I got persecuted in REAL LIFE for being a goon and playing Dust 514 within our corps.

I was taking transit home from work yesterday when two guys in front of me began talking about Dust. I politely interjected and we had a great conversation about Eve and Dust for a good 15 minutes, when they asked me what corps I was a part of. When I revealed that I was goon, they both looked at me as if I'd just strangled a baby in front of them. They promptly turned away from me and refused to acknowledge that I was even there.

When I caught on to what happened, all I could say was I was concerned that people actually brought animosity cultivated within a video game out in to the real world and that it was unfortunate they couldn't be more mature (these guys were clearly older than I was too).

Thinking about it now, all I can do is laugh.

In game is one thing that I'm used to, as I've spent more time muting people in FPSs than any other game genre, but when it comes out in the real world, it's entirely another thing. I almost pity these dudes that they are clearly not well adjusted people who can socialize properly face to face.

I can even justify doing it out of game so long as it's "in character" and in the right places online or whatever, that's something i had to pick up from EVE quite fast but on the train or whatever is pretty mental.

That's insane. Quite the opposite happened to me actually (in game though). Was just solo playing in Dust and had a guy (first one in ~2 hours of game play) actually use his mic. We tore it up and squaded up after. Told him I was a goon, to which at first he said something along the lines of "Ah man really?" (He's a care bear miner in EvE so not much goon love ) But he at least had the maturity to keep playing and talking and realized we are not really the raging douchebags many people like to believe we are.

Months ago some of the players in the beta got hold of some EVE history, dramatically misunderstood everything and have been masturbating each other with goonhate ever since. It really has nothing to do with reality at this point. From a TEST perspective its retarded, but makes it easy to identify the easily manipulated.

I was really hoping that having had a long enough and friendly discussion with these guys that they would have done the mature thing and seen past the fact that I'm also a goon. These guys were a good 5 to 10 years older than I am as well, which just makes it sadder.

Wow this really does make me want to buy a PS3 just to support the cause. I just had a couple questions:
1. From what I've read so far I can't really tell how big an effect Dust 514 play will effect the EVE Online universe. Will this stuff matter?
2. Whats the general consensus on the strength of the goons Dust abilities? Will it be any less dominating than the EVE Online presence?

Right now? Not a drat bit. All we're doing is shooting people in a fancy space setting. Eventually though, CCP has hinted that Dust will be integral to capturing planets and guarding facilities and the production of "moon goo" or some other poo poo, and we might even be able to shoot down space ships. In short, I don't have a clue as to how far our interaction will go, but CCP makes it sound like it will be there.

We're just another (small) group of guys who like shooting poo poo. We don't even know what our strength is yet because there really isn't a metric. We beat TEST in a corp battle, but that doesn't matter cause they're scrubs and corp battles are stupid right now. But eventually if we reach a point were we can field an entire team of troops whenever and where ever we are needed with well trained players, we should have a pretty decent presence. Our presence probably will be determined by just how important having Dust Bunnies is during space wars. If we're actually a vital part of the nullsec game, I think we can expect to see more people join up. That could be 12 months or more away though.

Lassitude
Oct 21, 2003

Yeah, the stuff they've talked about for EVE-Dust interaction is Dust allowing for easier taking of systems, Dust-held planets having the ability to construct anti-ship artillery on the surface to attack EVE ships, and potentially an economic link where Dust activities can acquire items useful to EVE players and unobtainable elsewhere, and vice-versa. Presumably the Dust industrial aspect will be linked to the coop side of the game coming sometime soon, where you can team up with friends to fight AI rogue drones.

It's all a ways off right now, understandably, but they definitely have been hyping the connection.

Considering to chip in as I sort of lack the whole "shoot-people-in-the-face" setting, I read you did a corp battle versus someone, without breaking the NDA how would you consider corp-battles to say a TDM in some other FPS? Better/worse tactics involved etc?

Lassitude
Oct 21, 2003

There's a lot more to Dust than to basically any other FPS. It's quite deep in a similar way that EVE is quite deep. The fight we were in recently against the Reddit people isn't a very good indication, though. But once the game becomes more feature-complete, and once the circumstances of corp fights aren't so limited as they are right now, it's apparent that things will get quite dependent on good tactics/bringing the right tools/etc as well as simply being good at shooting people.

Sammus
Nov 30, 2005

What Lassitude said. There's a lot of room for depth in Dust. Unfortunately, the beta is quite limited in scope. We're playing on maps that are maybe 1/10th of the size of what we can see, and playing with a very limited number of players as opposed to what it seems the maps will eventually be able to handle. If you zoom out on the overhead map while waiting to respawn right now, you can see that we spend all our time in the very corner of maps that could easily hold many, many more people and require a much more diverse set of tactics to battle on.

This is absolutely the plan. I wanted to capitalize as much as possible on Goonwaffe's reputation but in all honesty, we're doing a good enough job without that, i've certainly generated way more tears than i possibly imagined and i never, ever expected someone to run a smear campaign against my good name this early in the game.

1, To start with it will have zero impact other than on factional warfare which is the "light" version of what Goonwaffe does in EVE. But it's got enough ability there to really gently caress things up and upset pubbies.

2, I want to make every effort possible to make us the powerhouse in Dust that Mittens and 'Waffe are in EVE. I've a very good feeling that there's going to be a massive advantage to huge numbers and being backed by good money in this game. I'm sure even the "elite PVP" players can be at a massive disadvantage in the future, if we keep generating tears, goons will join and we'll get to that point.

As for corp fights etc, we've just had an offer from another corp for a good number of contracts we can fight them over on a regular basis, just for shits and giggles and at the same time allowing us to fine tune our game and team working.

I'm gonna need everyone's feedback on it on the corp forums though, the threads here: http://www.immobileinfantry.net/forum_threads/1264112

The guy that's leading them is Ex English special forces so they are going to be drat good, they've beaten a lot of the major players so far and if we can work with them we'd have another significant advantage in the future.
