Sure, just email me (hume@goonreads.com).

I have somewhat fixed the problem with the potential of super huge tags by just setting the maximum font height of tags. Also, don't worry about putting adult (18) in the tags--only in the title.

It's great to see new subscribers. I am back from California with an awful cold so haven't really gotten around to updating SEO stuff, but will get to that within the next couple weeks. Also, if you don't see your book listed, please go back and check your book post. Ensure that there are no messages in your post and that you have submit (again, if needed) for pending review.

Having trouble setting up an author blog. I have submitted a book and I'm on the author list, but I never got a message or anything to set one up. Probably just missed something. Any ideas?

I think you are the only author I haven't made a blog for because I was out of town (by the way, your book seems really awesome and beautiful). Can you email me at hume@goonreads.com and let me know what you want your site to be? Most are goonreads.com/authors/firstnamelastname. Not sure if you want your initials or your first name and last name? I'll set it up as soon as I hear.

I've registered, submitted my Goon name and everything. I'm assuming I need to wait to be vetted before I get the pretty +new button? :-)

Also, I publish under 3 names (gah!) Is there a way to differentiate between my pen-names? Is this something I will be able to figure out once I can post books?

Thanks!

You are already a contributor :)

Our author/book listing is automatic and pulls the author (pen in this case) name from your book post when you fill out all the fields. Whatever you fill out as the author name when you submit a book, that name will show as the author of that book in the author/book listing.

edit: I've updated the book template to include the following instructions:

1. Uploaded cover images must be exactly 200 pixels in height. This was already the field instructions, but I don't think people are seeing it.
2. If the post needs fixing (such as the cover image not being the right size, etc.), the post will remain in draft form until the contributor re-uploads the correct image. I will just put these and any other instructions in red at the top of the draft post if there are any outstanding things that need to be fixed.

Log in to the site, edit your profile in the top right corner I think, you might have to hover your mouse over something up there to get the option.

Then upload your avatar on that page. I think it's down near the bottom just above SA Name.

I've added a FAQs page to the site and to the OP. I've included the questions asked here and will continue to update the FAQ. Also, we now have 45 books at the site! Good work, goons.

We're still editing tags. I would recommend using 4-5 tags only to keep things manageable. But feel free to add keywords to the SEO fields if they've been edited out of your post.

The FAQ and other book submission reference covers all this stuff, plus much more. I think it has taken some trial and error to be able to recognize potential imbalances, problems, etc. I hope that adding books is pretty easy for you. The main problems I've seen is with the image sizes.

Daddy's girl's a fucking monster.
Registering as a contributor as we speak! I'm late to the goonerotica party but oh well.

FWIW, I think IBT is correct that most of us probably don't have time to flood the site with every story we've ever written, so I don't see that becoming a huge issue. Personally, when I maintain, say, my Goodreads page, I generally only bother adding stories that I already know aren't complete duds. It's just a massive waste of time otherwise. I'm sure most of us will probably follow the same principle here, so chances are it will police itself.

Icon-Cat posted:

I think as erotica comes in we might do well to supervise the most efficient tagging of it. I don't just mean individual subgenres (i.e. "bondage"), I mean the basic categories: for straight men, for straight women, etc. That way people can find what they want easily.

Perhaps people from the erotica community can enlighten us on what some efficient, standard abbreviations might be (you know, in the vein of "M4W" on dating sites, ha ha). As self-appointed tag police, I wouldn't mind standardizing tags on submissions as they drift in.

Didn't see anyone else really address this, so I thought I'd throw in my two cents. Generally, erotica is categorized not by the intended audience (because who knows? I'm not here to judge if a straight dude wants to read about gay dudes rubbin boners!) but by the pairings and kinks/fetishes/sex acts/tropes contained therein. There's essentially three major categories that need to be dealt with:

1. Gender pairings
2. Kinks and fetishes
3. Archetypes, plots and tropes (non-sexual)

Gender pairings are pretty intuitive for the most part. M/M for gay, M/F for straight, etc. With multiple partners, you group the letters together in a way that signifies who interacts with whom. In a two-man threesome where they don't interact sexually, it's M/F/M. In a two-man threesome with some boner rubbin, it's M/M/F. Et cetera.

The cool thing is that #2 can also be partially addressed in this signifier. For example, M/m means one of the men is dominant over the other. You'd probably also tag this story as BDSM or D/s but the gender pairing signifier helps as well. But there are a lot of potential signifiers in this category, some of them REALLY specific, everything from BDSM to gangbangs to pegging and anything inbetween. Google "list of kinks" basically.

Then there's stuff that doesn't directly have to do with the sex, but can be just as important because it sets up the dynamic of the story. Common archetypes in erotica include the billionaire businessman, the cop, the stepdad, the priest, the professor...you get the idea. Plots can include faked or arranged marriages, blackmail, "sex pollen," abduction, shipwrecks...most of this stuff is borrowed from the romance genre.

Overall, though, I think most of us will probably self-police this as well. By now, we know (or at least should know) what the standard keywords are and will default to using them on Goonreads as well. Same goes for the ill-defined distinction between "erotica" and "erotic romance." Some would disagree, but I feel that, while not all erotica is erotic romance, all erotic romance is erotica.

Regarding tags, they should be like genres rather keyword tags, maybe 4-5 max? Keyword tags can also go into the SEO fields. The main thing is that erotica books (which could have a lot of really specific keywords) won't fill up the tag cloud and drown out other books.

Petry, I'm open to hosting other goon book bloggers. Until now I've only invited those who post their books at goonreads, but I'm not tied to that. People can always e-mail me if they want a blog here.

Strange, indeed. I deleted Summerland (it was in draft, and no work had been done on it yet). And now the link is good again. Whoever did Summerland can just start on it again. I don't know why the default recently added would link to something in draft. If it happens again, I'll check the code.

I'm not quite sure I understand the 18+ tag as it's currently implemented.

If there's a special tag or category for erotica, that's one thing, because it's reasonable that some readers might want to look at all of the erotica lumped together, or conversely have no interest in erotica titles and not want to have them show up in search results.

But beyond that, if you look at snippets of content, there's all kinds of mainstream horror, thrillers, even literary stuff that has some super "18+" moments in it, stuff that a 13 year old might reasonably buy at a Barnes & Noble. Is Naked Lunch "18+"? How about Fight Club, or Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas? Heck, The Cider House Rules and Slaughterhouse Five both have allusions to horse porn.

My concern is that it creates an ambiguity that could result in authors getting less attention for their works, and readers having a harder time finding stuff of interest. The 18+ tag can create a negative impression to someone browsing, causing them to assume it's either erotica or shock value. I think that the author's promotional blurb for the book typically gives a good sense of the tone, whether it's something sexually explicit, or dark & gritty, or whatnot. Amazon doesn't really have any notion of an "18+" category, I'm not sure what value one is on goonreads (especially since the site isn't selling/distributing books, just indexing them).

Icon-Cat

We're requiring that titles of erotica-type books begin with "Adult 18+".

The title rule is different than a tag. We have an erotica tag. We have other tags for certain types of erotica (i.e. BDSM).

As I understand it, FingerbangMisfire self-policed his book for gore and such and put an "18+" at the end of its title, in although it's not THAT kind of 'grownup material'. I approved it without diddling with the title as he had it. I have no objection to people using the title to self-police in that fashion, but I don't know if I'd necessarily _require_ it on Goonreads.

I would defer to Desmond on this matter though; if she thinks that's just going to confuse people, maybe Infected should have the 18+ taken out of its title and, if the author desires, a content warning can be added to the listing text.

I took the 18+ off of Infected (by the way, I keep adding books to my shelves and am behind in reading, but Infected looks like yet another I need to get to). The adult tag is only for books containing erotica. Sexual themes exist in a whole lot of books, but it seems pretty clear which books are considered adult 18+, and the authors of those books also have been adding the title consistently. H_double, I understand your concerns but feel a need to both warn any minors about content as well as to draw attention to adult books for people who are looking for just those books (the adult content is auto-listed in the books directory). It really isn't meant to bring lesser attention to those books. I also feel there's a big difference between adult themes appearing in fiction and books that are solely meant to be pornographic in nature. This is not a judgment call, just an observation that I think the authors of erotica are good at tagging and listing as adult.

I also started a Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/Goonreads. I needed to redo the page so will be adding content tonight. If anyone else wants to help admin that page, let me know.

Edit: I also forgot that there is another change to Goonreads. Previously, all authors who posted books at goonreads were invited to set up their own hosted blog under the multi-site goonreads.com/authors. However, only four have taken advantage of this so far, and at the same time, I'd like to open the offer to others at SA who might not publish books but who want to blog about writing, reading, etc. So I'm taking down the unused sites I set up earlier. I just don't want to have empty blogs sitting around that aren't going to be used.

If you want a blog, please make sure you're already registered at goonreads as a goon and just email me if you want to have a blog here. Then I'll set up a blog for you. You're the administrator of your own blog, so Wordpress knowledge is important. The blog content must follow our other content policy.
