0.12 tournament begins on May 11

The tournament is over! Final standings are here; SA team and player results are summarised here.

Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup 0.11: Arachnophobia was officially released on the 2nd October!

What is Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup?
Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup is a popular, free roguelike game focusing on tactics, balance, variety and a lasting challenge. A roguelike is generally a turn-based RPG, with an emphasis on randomly generated worlds, a high depth of play, huge menageries of monsters, and some MacGuffin you have to dig up and escape with. Most roguelikes use ASCII characters for graphics, though an increasing number utilize graphical tiles, like Crawl. Roguelikes are usually very tough to beat, and death is often permanent: once you're dead, you're dead.

Crawl is unique in its design philosophy, with a focus on eliminating a lot of the annoyances of the genre, while focusing on the strengths.

Major design goals:
  • challenging and unpredictable gameplay, with an emphasis on tactical skill
  • meaningful decisions (no no-brainer, works-every-time-with-every-character play choices)
  • grinding should be unnecessary, even discouraged
  • a simplified and elegant interface, with a helpful tutorial and mouse support for new players
Minor design goals:
  • clarity of design (playable without the need for external spoilers)
  • thematic consistency (no lightsaber-wielding orcs)
  • replayability and lasting challenge (with optional branches, multiple race/background/god choices, and optional challenges)
  • proper use of out-of-depth monsters
This culminates in an accessible roguelike with a compelling play experience, with tough but fair challenges, and the tools to win under your own steam. When you do die (and you will), the cause is usually clear (if not completely preventable), as well as how you can overcome it the next time around.

What's new in 0.11?
New branch: Spider Nest! Lair will now contain one of Snake/Spider and one of Shoals/Swamp, so players always get one water-themed and one poison-themed branch
New uniques: The Spider Nest exclusive unique Arachne, and the elven ice elementalist Fannar
New monsters: Hell Sentinels replace Pit Fiends, bog bodies replace bog mummies, and the new orb spider can be found in the Spider Nest

Other major changes: Elf cut to three floors, Swamp drastically improved (smaller levels with less irritating layouts and features), ammunition simplified (ammo no longer has an enchantment, mulch rates modified to compensate), monsters can now use jewellery, equipping and removing armour is now interruptible, and I am overjoyed to report that player ghost Sticky Flame has finally, finally been nerfed to range 1

There are also some additions outside the main game - a new Dungeon Sprint map called 'Ziggurat Sprint' has been added, which starts you off with an appropriate selection of gear and then has you run through 27 zig-style levels of increasing difficulty.

Many, many more things have been changed than can be listed here - peruse the complete changelog to see them all.

Screenshots!
WebTiles (on CSZO):

ASCII (again on CSZO):

Android Tiles! (yes, there's an official Android tiles version now)

How do I play Crawl?
You can download the offline builds here. The offline versions of Crawl are available in ASCII and graphical tiles formats for Windows, Mac OS X, Debian/Ubuntu, and there is also a (new!) official Android Tiles port. The development builds (Android port is located here) can also be downloaded which allow you to play the most recent experimental beta releases and test out the new additions being considered for the next stable release.

However, one of Crawl's biggest selling points is the ability to play online through various methods - read on!

Why and how to play online
If you use either an SSH client or the WebTiles interface, you can connect to one of the Crawl servers and play along with dozens of other people, or watch those who are playing. Here are some of the perks of online play:
  • People can spectate as you play, and with WebTiles' integrated chat window, spectators can now talk amongst themselves as well as with the game player
  • Your game saves and play statistics are tracked centrally and are available from any computer
  • Every game you play is recorded by the server, and can be replayed in whole or in part, or otherwise examined for later analysis, bragging, and mockery
  • You get to meet and fight the ghosts of other players, rather than just your own
  • You can play in the annual and version-release tournaments
Purists can play or spectate via console (see sections 'The Servers' and 'The Software'), while for those who like the graphical interface, the CDO and CSZO servers also offer the wonderful WebTiles (updated again for for 0.11 with new graphics and better functionality!), which is a web interface which mimicks the offline Tiles build, and even has an integrated chat window for the player and spectators to talk in. While you were previously unable to spec console players while yourself using WebTiles, or vice versa, the CSZO server now allows you to do this!

Places to play Crawl online
CAO: crawl.akrasiac.org - long-serving Crawl server located in America, offers console and WebTiles. The website which tracks player wins and statistics is now back online at crawl.akrasiac.org/scoring
CDO: crawl.develz.org - Germany-based server for the Europeans among us, supports console and WebTiles interfaces
CSZO: crawl.s-z.org - Recently established Pennsylvania-based server, supports console and WebTiles as well as cross-interface spectating and chat. The most popular server among online players at present
CSN: crawlus.somatika.net - offers WebTiles and has both USA and Australia/Asia servers

What happened to the annual tournament...?
Traditionally there is a version release in August and an accompanying tournament to celebrate the release. This year's tournament was significantly delayed, but eventually ran from Oct 20 to Nov 4.

This game is very hard. Where can I get help?
In keeping with roguelike tradition, Crawl is indeed an excruciatingly difficult game at times. Fortunately, there are many resources available to assist you (some considerably more reliable than others!):

##crawl - the official Dungeon Crawl IRC channel
##gooncrawl - the SA Crawl IRC channel
Knowledge Bots - a searchable repository of Crawl knowledge and monster data, probably the best source of Crawl info
The Tavern - the official Dungeon Crawl forum
CrawlWiki - community-maintained, notoriously out-of-date and of highly variable quality. Do not assume anything you read here is true or that any advice is sound

Beyond learning the basic mechanics of the game, probably the best way to improve is to talk about and play the game online. Online play allows other people to give you pointers on mistakes you may be making without realising, and there are usually friendly goons around in IRC who will be happy to advise you.

Minotaur Gladiator or Berserker is a really solid choice. IMHO Minotaurs are hands down the most powerful race for melee builds right now; their reflexive counterattack makes a lot of the early game a breeze, and their monstrous aptitudes and good stats can carry them straight through the postgame in the hands of a decent player.

Deep Elf Wizard/Conjurer/Fire Elementalist is still a good go-to if you want to shoot magic at people. Watch out for that infamous DE fragility though.

MiBe is pretty good and you can rune easily with no spells. Just had my first win after only a month's play on a MiBe with 5 runes.

See that sicknasty elf murder machine? Spent basically the entire game holding down tab and shooting everyone in the face for the glory of Okawaru until he gifted me a nice triple sword which I promptly used as an excuse to dump him and get that poo poo blessed by tso and then go on a glorious haste and cleansing flame fueled rampage through pan with my Angelic bro's that dabbled in some zig raiding for cure mut pots.
Of course I got everything but those and managed to pick up even more mutations while searching for more cure mut pots. So I used the one I had left in my stash and went to tackle the hells to see if they had gotten any harder.

They have.

I managed to blast through tartarus and best dis but then I almost died horribly to a swarm of fiend hellfire on Gehenna 7. After that I just gave up and went for the orb because seriously I just couldn't killed the fiends fast enough.

I think a small guide in the OP on how to play one of the easier Race/Class combos would be nice for new players to get them into the game. SpEn, TrBe or something. I'd write one but the deepest I've ever been is the bottom of the Lair.

Hooray, they released!

I think 0.11 is one of those "special gem" versions of Crawl. I think 0.9 (or was it 0.8? Whichever was the first version after the version that introduced the new XP allotment system) was the last gem. 0.11 has a new branch and, like it or not, more content is always great. It has the per-item autopickup screen, which is a huge usability bonus. It shortens the tedious Elf branch and fixes Swamp and gets rid of hidden doors, getting rid of three of the largest gameplay groans. Monster constriction is unbroken.

It is really a good mix of great highlights and huge playability enhancements. Really a fantastic release.

MiBe. Get the heaviest armor and the beefiest weapon you can find. Train your weapon till 27. Hit every single thing until it stops moving. Sometimes go berserk if you gotta.

If the body is a temple, then I've committed countless acts of desecration.

From the .8 thread, my elite Berserker strategy:

quote:

1) Start a berserker with decent spellcasting apts. My favorite is HE.

2) Switch to a weapon that allows buckler usage (to maximize defense), I prefer long blades in general, with HE in particular.

3) Get a great Trog gift by the end of Lair (this is ideal, sometimes Trog doesn't oblige, in those cases just get a good Trog gift).

4) Dive through the lair rune branches and burn trog piety in the end vaults.

5) Drop Trog. You should be around turn 25-35k at this point.

You now have two options:
6a) Wait out Trog's wrath by building up a popcorn shield of piddly monsters on the low D levels. This takes 30-45k turns. Ring of sustenance recommended.
or
6b) Get cTele and learn blink / teleport self asap (or get a wand of teleportation). No waiting for you, you're doing it the manly way!

7) Switch to ash.

8) Get good ash piety and as soon as possible start pumping spellcasting. Should be able to get up to level 6 or 7 fairly quickly by dumping your pointless skills, like stabbing, or weapon skills you didn't use.

9) Pump up your primary magic school. Again, this should be fairly quick. Though you do need a bit of luck to get a book that lets you cast an early spell from that school, because you do need that 1st level to be learned normally.

10) Cast tornado with a character with 200+ hp that can melee pretty much anything.

I'd make some changes to this strat given the changes since 0.8, but overall it still holds. I love the Berserker -> spellcaster switch. One thing I didn't note here is that you have to always choose INT on levelup.

We could always just list our favorite good combos and link them in the OP.

Edit: gently caress it i'll start listing them; feel free to add to my suggestions.

Minotaur Berserker: Probably one of the easiest combos in the game now thanks to the buffs Minotaurs received when MD's were removed. Hit things with an axe and put on the heaviest armor you can get until trog gifts a really sicknasty weapon. Then once you get a good axe pick up a crossbow or longbow to give yourself a reliable ranged attack. After you that enjoy the rest of the game being a tab fest as you carve your way through hordes of foes; however be careful of constriction in the Snake pit!

Kobold gladiator/berserker of trog Introduction to light armor melee fighters; I included gladiator mainly because they start with darts and a buckler (not in .12 though!) things that a low level kobold of trog wants anyways. Stuff yourself with dungeon meat and berserk constantly while training up maces for trog gifting you a demonwhip. Once you get a good dwhip be on the lookout for (or acquire) rods that would give you an excellent ranged option.

Deep Elf Fire Elementalist of Vehumet Classic conjuration combo; made beastly when fireball was lowered to level 5. With Deep elf aptitudes and vehumet's conjuration boost enjoy fireballing all of lair and getting firestorm castable for the lair branches.

Spriggan Enchanter of Nemelex Still as overpowered as ever though you may wish to try and grab wonders as your first deck gift by saccing spare food and potions. There are also new cards to play with and some decks (namely destruction) have been made safer to use. Also enjoy the incredible amusement that comes with the legendary orb (of destruction) card!

Deep Dwarf Earth Elementalist/necromancer of Makhleb Also in the still overpowered category are the classic DDEE and DDNE. Both should make it priority to pump Earth Magic and Necromancy as much as possible though DDNe's can get away with ignoring earth magic if they focus on melee and charms heavily. Don't be afraid to use that healing wand however!

(Minotaur) Fighter of Yred - Polearm reaching and undead hordes. You should have 2 or 3 Profane Sevitors by the time you're ready to collect runes. Easy enough to get them all killed in Vaults 8 or some other place if you feel like switching to TSO for Crypt/Abyss/Pan/Tomb/Hells. Use the {w}ait command to gain more XP and Summon Undead Allies when the fun arrives or when you're ready to go downstairs. Can play like a much more forgiving HOPr.

I don't think starting as a DK adds enough to the early game to be worth it.

Edit: Be sure to get Shoals for all the excellent tridents and Demon Tridents, Swamp can suck a D.

My goal as a game developer is just to make gnome puns

I always get into playing Dungeon Crawl again when the new version is out. I only have 4 more characters to win as, before I have a victory as every class, race, and god. The races are:

- Demigod: So BLAND, worse than human, kind of waiting for a revision on the whole design of this race before I bother.
- Mummy: This always seemed like an exercise in pain for me. Never quite figured out a good way to play as this one, that didn't either feel weak or tedious.
- Ghoul: Like a small Troll, except doesn't do any damage?
- Troll (OF XOM, the only god I haven't won with)

So I went with Troll Wizard, picked up Xom as soon as I could. Got Blink right away, which saved me a few times. Got to Lair, found my first ring in there. Turned out to be teleport control.

And then Xom banishes me at the 40 minute mark.

I find the Abyssal Rune 20 minutes later. No sign of an exit.

Another 20 minutes. With most of the Abyss map uncovered, I eventually die to sifiritirities that just keep spawning in. Though what really killed me, as usual in the Abyss, was just the crushing boredom of it.

Will try a couple more times this week. I'd still like to win as a new race this version. Not sure how feasible that's going to be, unless I'm missing some tips that make these last 4 characters less crappy.

How does it feel?

So I know that velocity is supposedly the best brand for bows, but would a randart longbow with a speed brand be preferable? Assuming a high damage enchant and whatnot. I'm not sure if the lower damage hurts you too much against high AC enemies, and I've read bows can struggle against end game high AC stuff.

If you're going postgame I'd say that holy wrath is unequivocally the best brand for a longbow. I was using a holy longbow to horribly shred Pan lords, Hell bosses, Fiends of every stripe, and essentially everything else I ever looked at. Because longbows have really brutal base damage if your stats are good, you can still use a heavily enchanted holy wrath longbow to massacre any other dangerous enemy that isn't a demon or undead, because basically nothing in the postgame isn't a demon or undead and once you can reliably kill those you can pretty much just steamroll anything else.

Speed brand is cool and everything but the damage reduction per attack is just too steep to be worth it IMHO. What's even worse is the fact that you'll be mulching more ammunition for no particular benefit. Unless that randart is goddamn insane and/or you have a CRAPTON of slaying bonuses, I'd say you're better off with even an unbranded longbow.

e: If you do use the speed bow, please go Okawaru, use haste+finesse, and report back on what it's like to be a hilarious living minigun.

Does Crawl run slow on the server always? It runs blindingly fast on the online version, but really slow online. I have a brand new computer I built so I know that is not the problem.

taqueso

...

Sometimes the server can get bogged down, but usually it is pretty fast. I have noticed that some things are quite a bit slower on my lovely netbook, like autoexplore and loading a new level, so client CPU must have at least a little to do with perceived speed.

On a tangent, I've noticed that it is sometimes possible to "feel" if something is going to happen when using webtiles. For example, if I hit a monster and kill it, it takes a little longer than if the monster isn't killed. Of course, it doesn't really matter and can have no effect on the outcome, but it makes me feel like I am somehow subtly cheating. I never play locally, so I don't know if the same thing happens.

0.11 is the version that brings ranged combat to the masses. Anyone looking for a "new" easy combo should try out Halfling Hunter and worship Oka -- use that \ key to get stones and sling bullets on auto pickup, then go nuts. You'll probably want to stop picking up stones by about D:2 or 3 because you can end up with way too many.

Melee weapons are totally at your own discretion. Short blades and stabbing are an excellent choice given halfling apts, but you'll be dealing enough damage with slings early on that you can wait until you find a nice long blade/M&F weapon to invest skills.

HO has great apts for axes+armour, decent HP, can wear all armours, and level up faster than Minotaurs.

If you're not a berserker, +2 invocations is, well, a god-send I guess? Or a way to request god-sends. A good thing by all accounts.

If you are a berserker, Saprovore lets you berserk rather than worry about food. Are you ever worried about food? No, you're berserking too much to care.

Minotaurs have better dodging and ranged aptitudes but they level more slowly, can't wear helmets, and don't have Saprovore. For action Hill Orcs are great.

Not hidden doors proper, just random ones that don't do anything. Basically, if there's a hidden door, it's probably part of a vault.

Hidden doors are gone forever in 0.12, though; ones in vaults were replaced with regular doors or runed doors (which monsters can't open and don't get autoexplored through).

This makes me a little sad for some reason, but I didn't notice their removal despite playing trunk a bunch after the changes.

Is a sabre of speed a good idea, or should I toss it to nemelex?

E: Also, can I use fulsome distillation to make sacrifice fodder towards decks of wonder?

its ok if you're still in early game and stabbing

fulsome distillation creates potions with low value-no value

the one way I know that you could game decks of wonder with player created potions is with a vampire. it seems to be fixed in the current trunk version. when you are a vampire blood potions are worth ~45g whereas they are only worth ~5g to every other race.

I noticed in the trunk changelog that they've finally implemented cleaving on axes. Anyone have any feedback on the mechanism thus far? Tempted to roll a HOFE wielding a battle axe and setting everything on fire and then cutting it in half.
