We can't keep the crowd waiting, can we?
Forgiven by Within Temptation, which certainly seems from all angles like a song from the perspective of the one left behind after a suicide.

I know a lot of people dislike Amanda Palmer, but The Bed Song makes me bawl every time I hear it if only because I've been on both ends of the kind of relationship described in the song.

I know it's Eminem, and I hated him in his early music; it seemed all he did was scream about his ex and call his mom a bitch. I heard his new song, Headlights, and it's not a 180* of his early stuff, but it does have the sadness of regret, that he realizes now as an older and more mature person, how hard life had to have been for his mom, and how she wasn't treating him badly because she wanted to, how he blamed her for everything lovely in his childhood but his absentee dad got a free pass.

One of the most beautiful pieces ever written, Chopin's "Nocturne Op.9, No.2"

It's beautiful all the way through but towards the end becomes very intense (fortissimo) and then the finale has the most beautiful, calm resolution I know of. It hits me in the gut every time. If you haven't listened to it all the way through you are doing yourself a disservice. One of the most emotional pieces ever composed. I'm listening to the end right now and getting misty. Not because it evokes some memory of something in my life, but simply the sheer beauty of the composition. It's what I would imagine to be the most apt musical expression of a person's final moments of life, slipping away as peacefully as one could.

Close your eyes, listen and see if I'm wrong.

This piece is joy. If great art is supposed to express some truth, this defines that truth instead. Goodwill toward men shouted from the highest mountains. I firmly believe that no one will ever or could ever write a more perfect or more beautiful piece. At best, someone might write something equally beautiful. I have never made it through the section where the whole choir takes turns singing "seid umschlungen Millionen diesen Kuss der ganzen Welt" without tearing up. There isn't a single note out of place, and it all combines to make something truly sublime. What an incredible note for a composer to end on.

Xiu Xiu - The Oldness

They were a favorite band of mine before this, but this really solidified my love for them. Perfect fan made video: so simple, but so perfect, just like the song.

Who is Admiral Aken Bosch, and what is that old scoundrel up to?
A couple years ago, a man who may as well have been a surrogate uncle to me and my brothers committed suicide. He was my dad's best friend for decades and was around my family since before the oldest brother was born. I remember him being there for tons of important milestones in my life right there with everyone else who should have been, as well as regular old poo poo like going to the movies with Dad. One of the last times I really remember seeing him was shortly after I came home from Afghanistan. A few months later he shot himself.

At the memorial service, my parents chose a few songs to play while people talked and reminisced. This was one of them, and I can't hear it without getting choked up. I remember it interrupting a cross-country road trip I took a fair amount thanks to Pandora abruptly deciding it needed to be in my song rotation.

Viva La Vida by Coldplay reminds me of a dear friend of mine from high school, while she isn't dead or anything we haven't spoken in six or seven years, and of all the people I fell out of touch with from that era I miss her by far the most :smith:

I might be the only one that replies to this, but it's never too late to try to reach out to friends you've thought lost. I've done it myself on a few occasions, and I'm glad I have. :)

Arvo Pärt: Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten.

There isn't much to say about this one. It was written after the death of Benjamin Britten, and it's about as simple as a piece of music can get. Just an A minor scale, and a bell. It's beautiful, but it's so, so sad.

My fiancee and I were homeless, living out of a car for about a month and listened to this after we got denied housing. It still hurts when it pops up on shuffle.
