Unfortunately all my mod money goes to my other two cars, but as a daily driver I absolutely love my Volvo V70 T5 with the 5-speed manual, for all the reasons listed in the OP. Fast, handles great, and once I fit a full size clothes dryer in the back without even folding the seat down.

The only mods it has are H&R lowering springs, 18" BBS wheels and aftermarket stereo. But as a daily driver I will always have one of these as long as they're available. When I wear this one out I'll get another one.

I'm fortunate enough to work in a company with its own little wagon mafia. The only holdout is my immediate supervisor who has a BMW 5 series sedan. The owner of my company asked if I have the right transmission during my job interview, and was surprised to hear "yes".

Owner: Audi allroad 6-speed with upgraded turbos and air springs for highway handling and mountain ground clearance.
Owner's son: Audi S6 wagon 6-speed with coilovers and RS6 brakes, and a sleeper '84 VW Quantum with a 2.0T AWD conversion for the winter.
VP: Audi A3 TDI wagon
Shop tech: 91 Subaru legacy wagon gutted with STI struts and a planned STI motor conversion.

All glory to wagons.

There is a '06 manual transmission V70R with 25K miles on autotrader right now................asking $31,000!!!

He's actually asking $32,000! ($31,999). That is outrageous even with the low mileage. Maybe in 2008 or 2009 it'd be worth that. But yeah. It's not even one of the special weird colors.

The 04-07 R models are fairly expensive to maintain if you push it at all. They have very expensive shocks ($250 a corner) that cannot be substituted with aftermarket (unless you want a permanent CEL and failure message). The angle gear (transfer case if you will) that directs power to the back wheels is prone to leaking and if you don't pull it to get it resealed ($300) it will fail ($1500), and there is a coupling sleeve between the transmission and angle gear that is also highly prone to failure, and if it isn't replaced as a routine maintenance item it will weld itself to the transmission and force the entire transmission to be replaced. The early manual slave cylinders were prone to failure in under 50k miles but that's been revised with a more robust design, so most that have been repaired are repaired for good. Other than that the leather is extremely high quality but much more fragile, and must be maintained religiously.

Basically they have a few $2000 repairs that occur far more frequently than on any other Volvo but if you plan for it and work with it they are a real blast, and a fairly special car. Most of those repairs will only occur once during any one person's ownership. The 6 speed manual is not anywhere near as hard to find as it is on other Volvo models. The prices are coming down but if you don't have maintenance records then prepare yourself for a few very expensive bills.

They're factory fit, but not on this car - they were only offered as an option on the C70. Fairly rare genuine BBS but made for Volvo. I bought these off ebay and first had them on my 960 back in 2008. These are 18" and I have the matching set in 17" on my 122.

I guess I'm kind of a dork, I run V70R wheels on my C70 and I run C70 wheels on my V70 and 122.

So I am not sure where else to post this, but I'm looking for a new wagon so this seems like the right thread.

Currently, my girlfriend has a 2000 Outback with a little over 100k miles on it, but she hates driving it and I am not that big of a fan either, so its time for something new. I want something more modern/safer(kids in the next couple years is something that will prolly happen), but still entertaining enough that I will be happy driving it. Sadly, in the US that really limits my options. The only wagons out there seem to be Audi/VW(not interested in dealing with upkeep), Mercedes(never been a big fan), Subaru(too big, they seem closer in size to SUV's now), Volvo and BMW. So pretty much I am down to looking at BMW's(2009-ish 530/535/328xi) and maybe a Volvo(I love v70r's). I really haven't paid any attention to new Volvo's in a while, so I am not sure what to look for/stay away from. We test drove a 530xi, which both of us really liked and my brother bought one recently and seems happy with it. I still have to go check out a 535xi and a 328xi.

Anyone have experience with any of the newer BMW wagons? Or Volvo's? Am I missing any other options? It seems that all the other "wagons" on the market are either pretty much 5 door hatches or slightly smaller suv's.

Stay away from Volvo wagons from 01 and 02 as a general rule, they put bad software in the transmissions and then told owners to never change the fluid which puts all of them on borrowed time. From 03 onward they are pretty reliable, the 04-07 Rs are awesome but about 4x the maintenance costs with more failure prone items. The redesign came in 09 and those are also pretty solid as far as I know.

Are you under the mistaken impression that an S80 is RWD? Because the V70 made from 01 to 09 is on the same platform and pretty much an S80 wagon. Or did you mean S90/V90 which came as RWD whiteblocks but had no turbo.

The head of our local Volvo club drove one, he said he seriously considered selling all 3 of his current custom Volvos just to buy one. They're very, very nice.

What you really want is one of the V60 Polestar cars (only come in black or blue unfortunately) but they're $61k msrp and only 120 are being built worldwide, with something like 70 coming to the US.

The R-Design is next best and you can get it with whatever you want, and it's $15k less.

You can get a polestar tune for any regular Volvo, but that doesn't make it part of the 2015 limited edition.

But I was wrong in my earlier quote, there's going to be 750 worldwide with 120 (80 V and 40 S) coming to the US.

I know we have a black one that is the limited edition, but it appears to be the same as the silver and red ones, granted I didn't get to work on the black one. I just assumed they were all Polestar editions.

I did some more looking and found that they haven't actually started delivering customer cars yet, So those must be polestar tuned R-designs. Not the hot new one.

Props to the guy in the ad for posting pics of the accident and damage, looks like they probably frame pulled the front bumper horn and that's it. It might be slightly compromised if it's hit in the same spot again but I'd drive it myself. And he's right, if it can be aligned and doesn't burn up tires, and all the body gaps are good then it's been fixed decently with nothing to worry about.

Are either of you tall? If so the back seat isn't really that great in these, I'm 6' and couldn't fit the baby seat behind the driver's seat. Didn't really matter because I'm single so the baby seat just went on the passenger side. But even as a toddler my kid would not have enough legroom if the passenger seat was all the way back.

Other than that, shop for 03 and newer, preferably 05 and newer. The 01-02 models have a time bomb tranny and they facelifted a lot of things in 05, and also had the reliability really dialed in. Still some expensive maintenance items once the mileage hits 100k unless you're down for doing a 5 hour PCV replacement yourself. I think the perfect mileage to buy one of these is either 60k or 120k, because at 60k you'll have 50k miles before major maintenance, or at 120k most major maintenance should have been done already.

Other than that, they're drat safe and drat comfortable. A very classy ride. If you have a huge maintenance budget go nuts and get a V70R. Hottest baby hauler ever.

Honestly, buying it is probably going to come at the end of 2016, if not early 2017. I've got a wedding to pay for first. Half of it was idle curiosity, the other half so I can sperg out on the options for a while. I could probably start looking at something in the ~15k range then, though. That would give me basically half a year to save up a down payment, and God willing I'll be making considerably more money by then, since I'll have had my CS degree for a year.

A luxury wagon just seems like the ideal car for my wife to drive. That way I get to drive all of the stupid, weird, and impractical cars I want while we have a comfortable, decently powerful, and practical wagon to go on road trips or whatever else with. I'm pretty sure I remember her liking the looks of both the CTS and the TSX, too.

$15k puts you squarely in 2007-2011 territory for Volvos, depending on mileage and model. The P2 generation wagons ended in 2007 and the average price has dropped like a rock. There are still some babied low mileage models in perfect condition for that kind of money, and the platform had 8 years of refinement so they're pretty bulletproof. And they're very practical and decently powerful, you'll have to tell us if it's luxurious enough for you.

As to the Volvos, the 5 cylinder is very reliable, but requires more maintenance than the iron block 4. Also that maintenance costs more. But all in all great cars. Avoid the years 2001-2002 when shopping, transmission trouble and throttle body trouble are fairly expensive time bombs in those years.
