http://www.therustytoque.com/ Dunno if this counts as schilling or not since I'm only a volunteer lackey on the review staff, but the Rusty Toque is a super new online Lit Journal operating out of the University of Western Ontario. The exposure isn't too great right now, but I can tell you from first hand experience that the submissions we get are hilariously awful. Seriously, if you poo poo on a page and scan it, it's going to be head and shoulders above the usual crop. Though it's based in Canada it accepts international submissions and it's free to submit. IMO it's a pretty good place to think about if you are an inexperienced writer looking to get published who thinks they can do better than a guy who literally wrote an entire piece on his favourite pornography and goes into meticulous detail about how he jerks off. Takes poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and graphic short fiction. Since the editors work full time as profs, it may take a while to get a reply though.

When they've got something they want to publish, they apply for a grant (for the magazine) to pay you $50. Having run a Uni lit society before, we'd put together the mag and then ask the uni for the money to pay to produce it. So they likely say 'hey, we've got 4 pieces at $50, so $200 plus base cost please'. If the Uni denies the grant, then you're published but no cash.

Yeah, and I'd definitely love to hear more from the other side of the coin, from people who are running/editing/volunteering for lit mags. I wouldn't mind participating in one myself on a low key basis - are they generally on the lookout for slush pile readers? I always get the impression that slush reading is a really hated job and they're desperate for help. On the other hand, like I said earlier, I usually don't even read stuff that gets published so maybe I'm not the guy who should be setting the bar for others.

I'm aiming for literary SF, but I'm still sorting out the general tone; at this point, only two issues in, if I like a story I'll take it. asylum years, you were quite helpful, giving me lots of advice when I was first starting out. I don't know if you've seen the finished product, actually. For a brand new non-paying zine, we've gotten some amazing submissions. The upcoming March issue is looking especially spectacular, if I say so myself. I guess I could check in on this thread and answer questions people might have about running an SF zine. In my tiny circle of editor friends, we're worried that Duotrope going subscription only will kill a lot of the smaller non-paying lit zines out there. Hopefully we'll still be around this time next year.

Oh, I meant to say that students aren't allowed to submit to that journal at all, so those kinds of entries are usually from proud Canadians  . There's a separate one that university students submit to that is super amazing and accepts entries from only the most brilliant and handsome writers who are also wicked sick with the ladies.

Speaking of attracting more readers, one of the writers I published recently asked me if I'd sent the magazine in for reviews anywhere. This had never crossed my mind, naturally. Anything not directly involved in reading submissions and putting out a good product may as well be rites of some moon-language mystery religion as far as I'm concerned. I submitted a query to SF Signal, but I doubt anything will come of it -- they only seem to review pro magazines and for-real published books. Are there any other respectable sites or blogs out there that might be willing to review an exposure-only genre magazine?

I've set A Goal for myself: I'm tracking 40 deadlines on Duotrope (mostly fixed reading periods, but also a few contests and anthologies) which extend through November. I intend to submit something to at least 80% of these publications by their closing dates. I've already hit up seventeen of them in the last month. 2013 shall be the year I harass poor, overworked editors from coast to coast.

I just released issue 4 of my Lost in Thought magazine, and I'm looking for places to review it. I see in the OP there is NewPages and The Review Review. Can anyone recommend any other sites that deal with this sort of thing? I'm not picky, I'm looking for anywhere at all to take a look and help spread the word. I have no budget for this project, so I'm depending on word of mouth.

Today: Got an acceptance from Vestal Review for something I dashed off in a couple of minutes. Got a rejection from Black Warrior Review for pieces I've been polishing for months. It would seem that the acceptability of my work is inversely proportional to the time I spend working on it.

I've got a piece which I finished about eight months ago and have been sending around, and almost every rejection I got for it has been mentioning that it was shortlisted, or made their final reading round, only to be ultimately rejected. It's driving me nuts, I'd rather get a form rejection.

Oh, I'm getting plenty of those for all my other trunk stories. I probably need to lower my standards a bit; I sold two stories simultaneously at the end of last year for token amounts of money, and now I feel like I broke through that barrier and shouldn't have to go back to unpaid magazines. But that's fuzzy logic. Weirdly, though, like you, one of those stories was also a first-submission acceptance for something I wrote in less than a day.

I keep putting stuff out there, but damned if it isn't actually worse than when I was submitting papers to conferences. I've sold jack poo poo. Still, got six out there. Maybe something. I hope soon.

Well done! Most journals say they don't care about your previous publications and judge your work on its merits, which is probably true for most of them, but getting published is just good for your self esteem anyway.

FYI the journal Subtropics pays $1000 for an accepted short story and they have an insane turnaround time right now-- according to Duotrope they are averaging 8 days for a response. I just got a 3-day rejection. I'd be a little insulted if I wasn't so impressed. They don't take genre work though so this is only relevant if you write general fiction.
