I sometimes bring up that the mainstream Republican voter base / party is fascist and I'm often met with doubt and resistance to this idea, but really, if this isn't an example of a totalitarian mindset, I don't know what is. At some point you've got to call a spade a spade and stop arguing about semantic minutiae. The current US right-wing checks off all 14 checkboxes of Umberto Eco's definition of Ur-Fascism.

A counter-argument against the fascist nature of American right wing media is often "well, they're in it for the money and this is the easiest way", but one doesn't exclude the other. It's not because the primary goal of the Kochs, Murdoch and other sociopathic billionaires is to make (even more) money that they can't sympathize with a hateful ideology, or at least tolerate it suspiciously well.

There's also the counter-argument that hysteria about new fascism is moot because an armed revolt, second civil war, etc is unlikely due to most of its supporters being old and the US armed forces outclassing every possible militia in terms of strategy and organization. That's a good point, but not only do old people live considerably longer than they did, and hoard all positions of power (so they consequently have more time to spread the hate), most fascist movements didn't come to power through violence or violence only.

Libertarianism is exactly why I'm cautious about saying the political climate will be better once the Boomers are gone. Sure, social issues poll well among the youth and have gotten increasingly more progressive over time, but I swear that economic issues are absolutely hosed. Like you, I have educated friends who are extremely socially liberal (and not just "do as you please," but donating time and money to charity and attending Gay and Women's Rights rallies), but are terrified of scary phrases like "increased spending" and "higher taxes."

Like the2ndgenesis said, being a libertarian is sexy, and with that comes a huge amount of young people that value a woman's right to have an abortion or for gay people to marry, but think infrastructure spending and programs like affirmative action need to be slashed because taxes are bad.

You're only looking at it from one side, though. Keep in mind, a lot of people vote Republican/don't vote Democrat anymore because of wedge social issues, not because they agree with the economic platform.

Imagine if the Catholic Church got over their abortion/birth control hangups. They're still among the largest proponents for aiding the poor, and it would be a massive boon for leftists if they got on board.

As an aside, from a few pages back, but does anyone think all the abortion/rape noise coming from the GOP could be a sort of backdoor way into banning abortion except in the instance of rape? Like a re-framing of the narrative in a less crazy way that says "well, of course these people saying these things are insane but let's be reasonable. If a woman is raped of course she's entitled to an abortion. These other women? That's murder."

What I mean is, they can backpedal from the "God will prevent rape pregnancy" silliness but still ride the "abortion is wrong" horse then draft legislation once the Overton Window has moved enough, only make exceptions for rape and incest, and appear to be reasonable in the process simply by not being retards.

No, because like any other conspiracy theory it requires people to be extremely well organized, and in this particular case to look for the long haul rather than the short term.

Put another way, the people who spouted the "women have natural defenses from rape" line were mostly voted out in 2012. Your theory requires that they support the good of the party so much that they'll sacrifice themselves to push people farther right. Which is not something a politician does, they're out for themselves.

From what I've seen of Shultz he does this as well just with "Angry backlash to angry white backlash".

Like, I distinctly remember a part where he said "[GOP Politician] said that all welfare users take drugs!" and then he played a clip where the guy clearly stated that he didn't think all or even a majority of welfare users took drugs. It's not the same intensity but it is the same direction.

Yes but companies can count on young people not knowing their rights or being too poor or desperate to pose a credible threat of legal action.

Schools are often complicit in this by requiring an internship (which the student must find himself) to graduate. Scummier schools charge the student 3 semester hours of tuition to count the internship or even require that the internship be unpaid at the behest of business. Fashion degree programs in particular are notorious for these abuses.

For my school (as an engineer) we don't have a required internship but we have a 'capstone' project where a company will send us a problem and we spend the entire semester making the solution.

So basically the company gets small teams of essentially fresh out of school engineers working on their stuff for the price of maybe one or two salaries worth.
