Bart Vs. The Space Mutants was a test. Oh, you'll get a bunch of cock-sure, braggabrocios swagging around after beating Little Nemo, but you throw an NES Simpsons' game at them and they'll go running back to their "Halos" and whatever game the Playstation has quicker than you can say, "No Checkpoints."

Regardless, in the interest of Retro Game Mastery, I support this endeavor. I just hope you don't molly coddle these fledgling gamists too much.

gently caress the old NES Simpson games... had Bart VS the world when I was a kid... beat it, but goddamn was it pain every single step of the way, trying to master the dash jump... all one button, gently caress that.

Got to the same boss as the previous poster up there, nifty game, not tried for the treasures yet just been wanting to get used to the stage layouts. Such a nice game... also a stinkyhole. That Boss is drat obnoxious.

In the spirit of the challenge, you should try to keep all pictures like that.

I'm excited to get in on one of these, I'm off of work tomorrow and my girlfriend got called in. We'll see if I can beat this before I get to drunk to play it.

I beat Little Nemo as a kid but I'll be god damned if I ever got past the third level of Bart Vs. the Space Mutants, and I played the gently caress out of that game.

Neither did I. People complain about it, in this very thread still even, but I managed to beat Bart vs the Space Mutants twice for the previous thread, and I still haven't gotten to the second boss of Kid Chameleon.

I'm not calling Kid Chameleon a bad game because it was hard, by any means, but rather because it was unfairly hard.

I HAVE BEEN A VERY NAUGHTY BOY

Oh my god this game is so goddamn hard. I'm stuck on the second boss and have been for like an hour. Bitch keeps blocking with his sword, and I finally got one of the red flame ball things from one of those bobomb looking things, and he just deflects it away. It's taken me like 3 hours to get used to the regular attack, and like Pure Rock said the whole game is like running on ice. At least it is fun, but getting knocked down a screen is frustrating as hell.

I feel like beating this guy alone was a bit of a victory for me. (he's exploding in the picture)

Only took like 2 hours..jeez. By the way, that's the wrong time in the picture. It's actually about 7:00 pm right now and that was a few minutes ago.

edit: Just had a moment where I killed what I believe to be the true final boss the same moment he killed me.

My hands are very sweaty... I'm not giving up yet.

edit2: Just wasted a really good opportunity and then I beat the boss at the same time he beat me...AGAIN! I feel like Arino or something. Except he would probably be doing better. Haven't seen that episode yet actually.

The European release starts you with 7 lives instead of 3 and doesn't have as high-quality music as the Famicom version.

That's interesting. Sure could use those extra lives right now. The version I have only gives you 3.

edit: I beat it. Took me long enough. I got the bad ending and I barely snapped this horrible picture in time: http://imgur.com/RKG3W.jpg

It's gimmick thinking about his girl. Right after the credits. Sadly I think when there's that much black on the screen it messes with the camera so it sort of looks like a white blob. You can look up the ending and compare though I guess.

I think maybe Mr. Gimmick was too hard of a start, especially for less than a week. If I'm remembering correctly, the YouTube video I saw when I first heard of this game was by a guy who was quite obsessed with it, saying he played it for years and years (and it showed, too). He also said he never legitimately got the good ending.

Don't give up hope! You can collect 3 bombs outside the entrance to the boss. A jar will come out of that thing the black balls come out of now and then. I found that made the second phase of the boss a bit easier.

If I shouldn't be posting tips like this just let me know. I'm under the impression we can help each other out as long as we don't use walkthroughs and the like to do so? Not that anyone couldn't just look up a walkthrough anyway, but to keep to the spirit of retro gaming, and the day and age when these games were popular.

What is GCCX?

It's short for Game Center CX, a Japanese show where they have a comedian named Shinya Arino play, and attempt to beat, old video games. Generally he has to beat the game in one sitting, although he can call for a second-day extension if he can't finish the game in a single day.

They have some other assorted segments themed on retro gaming, where he playtests more obscure systems, or visits mom 'n' pop candy stores to play their old arcade machines.

There's a SomethingAwful fan translation effort at this thread.

I'm a little late to the party, but I think I'll jump into this too. I have played it a little bit (just to check out the modified sound chip), but I never beat the first level. Also, is it ok that I'm going to do this on my PSP? I'd play on my computer, but I only have a 360 controller for it, and we all know how wonderful the d-pad is.

I just put Gimmick on my PowerPak a few days ago and this is a good excuse to go play through it. Shooting for a bad ending to start, I made it to the stage 6 boss a couple of times but couldn't finish him off before I needed to sleep. This really is a good game, and entirely beatable. I'll probably get through it on the weekend.

Ok, so I decided I was going to go all out and try to get the good ending, so I was making sure to find each special item. I'm currently on stage 3, and was able to find all of the items so far.http://imgur.com/a/kAwDB
Anyways, stage 3 is a total pain in the rear end, and I'm on my 5th or 6th continue. All of a sudden, I had a horrible thought. What if the game doesn't count you getting the special items in previous stages if you continue? And guess what? It doesn't. So anyone trying to get the good ending, you have to do it without continues.

edit: When you clear a stage after collecting the special item, on the world map, that stage marker's enemy is waving a red flag. If you don't get the item, it's waving a white flag. If you continue after getting the items, they wave white flags.

Not sure how much time I can put into this, but I'm giving it a shot. Going into this game almost completely blind, and I'm already at world 4. The falling blocks in the cave can go right to hell. If I finish, I'll make a trimmed down video of the whole playthrough.

That's fantastic. I thought it was going to be when his sword flies down after you kill him, you can get hit by it - I did, it killed me, and it counted as a win.

Also, gently caress level 5. gently caress level 5 so hard. If there's one thing I HATE in video games, it's conveyor belts.
