It feels like a large portion of the game's difficulty is the fact that you can slide down hills. I died multiple times last night simply by not paying attention and failing to notice that I was on an incline. It kind of throws you for a loop, I feel, since it's just not expected out of an NES platformer.

I feel like a horrible gamer because I can't drat beat stage 2's boss. He just keeps blocking with his sword and it is really hard to bounce a shot onto his head. And I can never tell if he is going to charge, jump or back up. I got the same thing Mikl did, but didn't get the extra lives for it. ![]() Any advice on this guy or do I just gotta keep lobbing them at him?

Well, I sat down and played it for a little while, got kind of used to the star-slinging mechanic, and managed to make it to level 3 before deciding I'd had enough for the moment. I think I missed the secret in level 2 though, I was under the impression that beating the boss would give me the secret (so naturally when I tried to collect his sword at the end, that didn't work out too well). Guess I got a lot more Gimmick to go!

Well I'm through to Level 4. This game is drat brutal, but the more I play it the more I like it. It's getting more fun, but the difficulty curve is intense. It takes e 3-4 game overs each stage just to make it to the boss, each of which usually kills me on the first attack after reaching them. I got the special items in the first two worlds and I think I know where they are in 3 and 4, but I don't think I have it in me to get the good ending to this game if you really have to beat it without continuing once. Also, I'm finding that using a gamepad instead of the keyboard makes this game go from impossible to playable. I really wish this came out in the states, I would have eaten this poo poo up back then. Its like a weird mix of Kirby and Mega Man, graphically, and as frustrating as possible. This would have been one of those games I'd buy and sell a dozen times over my life, like Kiwi Kraze or Adventure Island.

(Whole run can be watched here: http://www.twitch.tv/thefrunk/b/336054116) Good ending, stockpiled like 50-something lives using the trick on stage 5 to get to the end boss, who I managed to cheese into a corner. Has this thread done Rygar for the NES? That game was pretty dman difficult, and as far as I can tell, the final boss is nearly impossible to beat. I had the game as a kid and was never able to defeat the final boss. As an adult I finally did it using rampant abuse of save states, and even then it was extremely difficult. That being said, it is a pretty fun platformer with some minor RPG elements to it, and is not overly long.

I have a few suggestions for NES games to challenge. I have yet to beat any of these, but I would like to. Panic Restaurant Little Sampson (seems very difficult, but also quite fun.) Zelda 2 Metal Gear Adventures of Dino Riki (I figure the continue code should probably be allowed for this one. Perhaps people could note whether or not they used it.) Shatterhand (seems really challenging from the few levels I've played.) I'll leave it at that for now. Don't want to get too carried away listing titles. Especially when everyone else is listing their own suggestions left and right. Edit: The original Castlevania might also be a good one. Probably no harder than Gimmick (bad ending) really. I've already beaten it though so I wouldn't be able to participate. Or the 3rd Castlevania (haven't beaten that one), of which I get stuck on the drat level with the falling blocks and what not. orochi fucked around with this message at Oct 19, 2012 around 06:36 |

Bad ending achieved! ![]() ![]() I might have a go at getting the good ending, but I'm in the middle of Super Metroid at the moment so it might not get done by the deadline. I don't know if it was done previously, but I found beating Adventure Island legitimately on hardware to be immensely satisfying. Though I had to do it over the course of several days, with the system paused for work and sleep.

There's a cannon beforehand that can give you a bunch of bombs. Use bombs on the second form to demolish it relatively easy.

Andronian posted:Anyone got any tips for phase two of this boss? I had a hard enough time getting past phase one but I just don't even know what to do to hurt him, let alone reliably dodge those dang homing missiles. The most helpful thing for me was getting cleanly past the first stage. Since you need to be on top of the conveyer to the left in order to land hits, just hang out there instead of trying to dodge on the floor. When the trolly is over to the right side you can send stars over, and when he comes over to the left you can land a direct hit from in close. To get hits in on the second form, you need to bounce them in onto the gun on top. A small hop to get some arc should do the job. Try to save a health potion from the start of the stage. One can be had reliably if you start the level with an empty inventory.

If you have full health you can tank it, too. Just keep jumping and chucking stars from point blank. This game is very lenient on the amount of time you remain invincible after getting hit.

Since we're entering the third day of the challenge, I'd like to pose some questions to you all: First and foremost, where do you think the difficulty of the challenges should go from here? Do we need games that are harder or easier than Gimmick!, and do we need longer or shorter timeframes for completion? Secondly, what era of gaming do you feel the cutoff should be for challenges considered? I was thinking about going as late as PS1/N64 games, but I'd like to get input on it before making a concrete decision. Finally, would anyone be adverse to "lightning round" challenges where the game being challenged is pretty short (like an arcade game), but the deadline is also very close to when the challenge is issued? These challenges would usually be put forward in between normal challenges, or for people who are waiting on another normal challenge to hit. Whether or not you complete these challenges would be recorded on the spreadsheet like normal.

Bovineicide posted:I guess the upside of being unable to sleep tonight is that I finished Gimmick. Now to try and get the good ending Me too, I wasn't even going to try but... thanks insomnia? I've been wanting to try it out for awhile, anyway. Kind of weird it wasn't brought anywhere b/c there's like no dialog in it at all (if there was Japanese, which was the version I played, I missed it). Just got the bad ending, but I forgot I don't have a camera around right now. Honestly, except for the lobster boss I didn't think the game was too bad; even then it is much less difficult if you have a potion or stop it from advancing, I think. If I had more time and could figure out where the special item was on the stage I didn't find it on I'd do it, I figure. Heck, maybe I'll do it some other time anyway. Oh yeah, Bovineicide, remember if you continue it gets rid of all your collected special items, so you can't get a good ending that way (otherwise it'd be cake). I don't have much of an opinion on where to go. I prefer difficult games over games where you get screwed because of a bad save system or game design, though, which I kind of think this one does for the good ending. And I wouldn't mind even some difficult-challenge PC games (Deus Ex!) or special challenges, though, again, I don't know if I can make this a regular thing. ![]() Whuh~!? Not every PS1/N64 game runs 100% yet, and not everyone is willing to fetch an ISO compared to a SNES rom.

I'm in the "boring adult with a full schedule" section too. This week's a bit of an exception. I wouldn't mind longer time spans, though I'm pretty much set for this one unless something horrible happens. Possibly involving lasers. Lightning rounds could be good on weekends, as long as they're really short games. Gimmick's at about the right challenge level, and the era of games probably shouldn't go past the SNES/Genesis era, at least not often. For one thing, PSX and N64 games tend to be a lot longer.

I agree with the idea of not going beyond the Genesis/SNES era of games, but I think we can still do things like TurboGrafx-16/PC engine games too, or even stuff like the MSX or the Sega Master System. Not just the main popular consoles of that era. As for my progress on this challenge, I've made it to Stage 4 so far. I don't see myself getting the true ending this time.
