Welp, this is going to have to do.

If I try for the good ending again I will probably kill myself.

I got a copy of this for my 5th birthday . Don't think I actually ever finished it as a kid so this'll be a good chance to bust out the Megadrive.
I got all excited and set everything up but I'm apparently missing both my controllers and an AV cable, this is the biggest bummer.

Awesome, I rented Rocket Knight Adventures a few times as a kid, but I never got very far in it. I just remember thinking Sparkster there looked pretty cool. I'm definitely gonna try to beat it now.

Ah, RKA! I love this game. In fact I loved it so much as a kid that I already beat it So, no challenge.

I do need to get my rusty skills in this game back up to speed, though. For reasons.

I want to do Rocket Knight Adventures this week, but I am planning on challenging Pulseman this week so that I can try it before I watch Arino challenge it later this weekend on GCCX. I may do RKA later if I have time. I was really hoping that you would choose Pulseman this week because of the new GCCX episode this Thursday(Oct 25).

You should add the controls or list the link to the manual. Also, are we able to play either the SNES or Genesis version or are only allowed to do the Genesis version?

Edit: Nevermind! The SNES version was cancelled.

Finally got round to putting the time in for Gimmick though just the Bad End. Came across a few weird things, the weirdest being having the pirate captain fall off the ship when I died, resulting in MASSIVE points that earned me two extra lives.

So yea, not really feeling it for trying for the treasures and a good end, but Gimmick seems to have a better idea of how to reach the final level.

What is this, ice?

Did a test run of RKA. Burned a couple continues on the stage 2 boss trying to work out a strategy for the part with the hands. Eventually cleared it on my last life and hit a game over at the start of stage 3. Not sure I'll have a lot of time during the week to dedicate to it, but I'll be giving it a go. Fun game.

Hit my first brickwall with this game in hard mode, got two gameovers as I keep loving up jumps . At least the boss before this one is waaaay easier then I remember.
Yeah normal is definitely the way to go.

^The first time I hit that boss he wasted me, but he didn't touch me at all the second time. I guess you just have to get used to how the platforms speed up, and always use the top ones.

If it's the one I'm thinking of, what I did was wait all the way to the right and do a spin move when the second hand hits. The first one can't reach you. Then you can rocket back to the left when he does the two-handed move, and repeat.

I had 6 lives and no continues lost until the end of Stage 5 with that awful Rock'em Sock'em Robots part. Finally figured out what worked (goading him to the left until his pattern changes, then after goading him to hit and quickly closing the gap to counter) but it is still really lame considering his reach is longer and he has a lot more life than you. Right after that I hit the terrible, long bullet-hell part. There's no autofire so my hands are killing me. Only got to second form of the ship (the robot) twice. This game has some interesting ideas about hitboxes.

Turns out I did have enough time to beat Gimmick, without the good ending though.

Good game but by golly the attack system could get really frustrating, especially if you accidentally got on the star you just threw and it took you to pit or a bunch of spikes.

E: The soundtrack was pretty badass though, especially on the ship level.

Let's see about this next one.

Welp, I failed the Gimmick challenge because as I was playing, I moved to get up, but I tripped on the power cord and my laptop actually fell off of my bed and blue screened on me.

It's fine now, but I had just reached stage 6 after some frustration and that progress is all gone. Hey, this really does feel like the retro game thread, it's just like when I was little and I had finally made it to World 8 in Super Mario 3, and then after going to bed I find out there was a power outage during the night and all my progress was lost.

That was a Monday night well spent, finally managed to finish it in normal mode after a few failed attempts. Overall a really good game with probably my favorite music on the megadrive but I am pretty mad at it after my constant game-overs at the stage 6 boss and don't want to look at it for another few years.

Impossible is just a word.

I tried to beat Gimmick but between the inertia and the fact that the stars are hard to use, I'm not realistically going to beat it in the next 50 minutes. I give up on this one. I was awful at this. 4 game overs on the second screen alone.

Rocket Knight adventures seems like it will be fun.

drat, that final boss is brutal. The whole final stage just doesn't end. You'd have to be pretty crazy to beat this game on the hardest difficulty.

I like the amount of variety in the stages though, all sorts of stuff in there. And after Gimmick the amount of control over your attacks is lovely. The music is nice but most of the time it feels a bit... out of place, somehow, like the rave in the final stage.

I recommend the emulators they use at TASVideos.org. They update them pretty often and they have to work since they use them. It's what I use.

IIRC You can dodge them when they extend by basically just holding left or right, they're slower than the thing you ride on so going from one side of the screen to the other avoids them easily. When they're hovering you can just blast them with the charged attack when they get near.

I did not complete the Gimmick! challenge. It took me forever just to get it to work. I think I'm going to have to just play along at home with these because I'm not going to have the time to do these games.

Also we should make Knights of the Round another lightning round or a regular challenge at some point, the arcade around where I live actually has a machine for it and I've played it quite a bit.

Yeah, I'd like this too. By the end of the challenge, I was finally getting the hang of the mechanics and actually having fun playing it.

I like the idea of revisiting challenges for a shot at revenge, especially in a case where only 3 out of 16 managed to succeed. Making it a regular challenge would probably kill the thread, but a lighting round would probably be fine.

I think it'd be fun to revisit challenges as future lightning rounds with special conditions. For games like Knights of the Round that few people completed, it could be something that makes the game easier or different rather than tougher, like co-op. For games that are popular and have lots of completions, it might be fun to revisit them as lightning rounds with special challenge rules, like Gimmick 2.0 (only the good ending counts).

Anyway I participated in this thread back in the day and beat The Clash at Demonhead and Batman (NES) for the first time as a consequence. Never played Rocket Knight Adventures. This could be cool.

Also, some game suggestions: Street Fighter 2010 is a weird and underrated one that's pretty difficult but also pretty unique. If we want to venture into doing an RPG this time around I think King's Field would be a great choice to see how new players respond to the pre-Souls Souls.

Counting up the total participations/successes for Gimmick! now.

For Gimmick!, 44 people participated, 23 succeeded in reaching an ending, only 7 reached the good ending. Great first turnout. I'd like to get some final thoughts on Gimmick! from people who didn't manage to complete it. What did you like about the game, if anything? What did you dislike? Would you challenge this game again if a shot at revenge was offered?
