For Gimmick!, 44 people participated, 23 succeeded in reaching an ending, only 7 reached the good ending. Great first turnout. I'd like to get some final thoughts on Gimmick! from people who didn't manage to complete it. What did you like about the game, if anything? What did you dislike? Would you challenge this game again if a shot at revenge was offered?

Gimmick has a lot of charm and I really like the idea of the star mechanic. However, I feel the execution of the star mechanic could have been better. It's really hard to aim or ride the star and once you throw it you can't make more until the other one is gone. The game seemed a bit too unforgiving in terms of checkpoints, health pickups and the like. Normally I wouldn't find but between the hard to control weapon and the main character's inertia issues it just made the game feel like a chore. If there were a revenge attempt I would probably at least try.

Speaking of Gimmick, there's a music select option if you hold Select and press Start on the title screen. Apparently there's an unused song, Strange Memories of Death! It's really good, and I very much liked the rest of the music in the game. I wonder if they didn't use it either because it doesn't fit, or perhaps it was going to be a "Game Over" screen?

Also, beat USA Easy (aka Hard ) in Rocket Knight Adventures! Boy, those last two stages just... kept... going! Took me 4(?) tries with one aborted (died a few times to the lava boss and the crystal cave part). Thankfully I only had to do Stage 7 once. Did it during a thunderstorm, which was extra scary because the power's gone out a few times already.

Spoilers to read only if you're fully done with the game: Apparently in Crazy Hard/USA Hard mode you have 0 lives and one hit kills you. Also, the ending for it is . Link.

Updated the OP with banners for each challenge. I figured it'd look a little nicer and be easier to find than plain old links. I'm particularly proud of the one for RKA, since I had to do the Genesis striping from scratch.

I'm down for some RKA action.

I'm playing the US version and was gonna try completing on the hardest mode straight from the get go, but that promptly changed after I made it half way through the first level and found out it was one touch death, so I shall be attempting it on normal for now.

e: Also now that we're done with Gimmick! I have a question, for the secret on stage 3 or 4, the one with the boss that looks like the kiwi from NewZealand Story (the secret item that's a samurai sword), if you mess the first star jump up and fall down the hole I take it you're forced to reset since if you kill yourself after that point it respawns you where you fell down to, and you can't use a continue since that erases the secrets you found on previous stages? If so, that's just plain nasty (and it's what I did a few times )

Just when you think you know a game inside out. Apparently in Gimmick in World 2 if you are fast enough you can "skip" the boss: link. I did it, but messed up the star hit at the edge. Also, I wish I could've done this for the second treasure, I hated that one: link.

Wow, apparently you do! It's the screen containing the secret entrance, at first I thought you were talking about the first secret room after you enter it. I guess I never flubbed that one, which is a little weird. Even if you do go back up the screen via star and jumping you don't have nearly enough time to generate another.

Edit: v I know, but what if there's a redemption later on? Or somebody's too late but is playing anyway?

Don't think you need to spoiler that, the challenge is over by now anyway. That actually happened to me, the boss jumped after me and promptly fell down the edge. Unfortunately I was already dead at the time.

Anyway, being ill gave me enough free time to beat that terribly evil final boss rush on Normal:

A really close call, on my last life. The fact that most checkpoints in the game were really close to the 1UPs really helped because everything from the space shooter forward is just plain mean (robot duel ). Still, it's a lot like Demon's/Dark Souls in that it's tough but (mostly) fair. Also the first Sega Genesis game I've ever played.

I was thinking that maybe the lightning rounds should last for two days so that more people get the chance to notice them in time to actually have a shot at beating them. I know the KotR one started at midnight in my timezone which is a bit difficult.

edit: welp, there goes my first continue, at train boss. Of course, that's mainly caused by losing most of my lives in the previous section (precision platforming ).

Made my first attempt at RKA. I really love old games like this so I'm kind of surprised that I've never attempted to play this before. It's fun! It's hard but I really like the mechanics of this game. It's also pretty nice that the game has some no-pressure walls early in the first level to force you to figure out the controls.

I died at what I presume is the boss of stage 3. All of my other continues were used up due to incompetence in stage 2 so I think my next attempt is bound to go better now that I know what I'm doing there.

edit: 2nd attempt I made it to the stage 3 boss without dying and won after a few tries, but then burned all my continues on the stage 4 boss and did not make it through stage 5. This game seems to be easier once you know what's coming so I think I can make it farther next time.

I beat easy mode.

The last sequence was kinda anticlimactic. I thought black knight rival guy AXLE GEAR would come back at the very end and have one more fight, but I guess I'm glad that didn't happen since I almost game over-ed as it is. I might try beating it on the next hardest difficulty. FUN(?) FACT: If you hold the charge on your jetpack for about a minute it will blow up in your face and you'll lose the charge. I had this happen to me at the last fight. A nice detail I guess?

Also, I like how the game manual has a lot of inane backstory that is never hinted at in the actual game. For example, did you know Sparkster was a war orphan adopted by the legendary rocket knight Mifune Sanjulo? Or that he is "easily pleased by praise or flattery"? Such is the rich and textured lore of Rocket Knight Adventures.

American Easy Mode Cleared! This game was something. Later parts angered me, but this game rarely devolves into "cheap" territory. Just lots and lots of pattern recognition.

The final boss chasing me into the atmosphere as I escaped the Piggy Death Star caught me off guard though. Now I know how Arino feels.

Two more days of RKA before the next full challenge, but for those of you who have completed RKA or those of you who want a little something on the side, it's time for a LIGHTNING ROUND!

What happens when you try and make a roguelike on the Genesis? You get Sega's Fatal Labyrinth, that's what!

Fatal Labyrinth tasks the player with finding the a holy grail goblet, which is nested on the thirtieth floor of a randomly generated tower. Find new gear, gather gold, and avoid overeating in this challenging RPG.

Your goal: Reach the ending!

This challenge will expire on Friday, October 26th at 6:00 PM EDT, right alongside Rocket Knight Adventures.

This game is available on Steam!

Managed to beat Rocket Knight Adventures on US Normal, then did as Konami told me and tried Hard. Made it to the section before the Stage 3 boss before getting a game over, after I accidentally shot myself into the lava instead of doing a neutral rocket blast.

Now I don't know what to do, should I carry on trying to complete RKA on Hard or do I attempt Fatal Labyrinth, hmmmmm, decisions decisions. (Although, in all honesty I doubt I'll be able to make it past Stage 6 on RKA Hard, I'm just rear end at shmups.)

The solution is to hit A against every wall until you find a secret passage.

What weapon were you using? During my stream I was lucky to stumble onto a battle axe in floor 1 which one-shot anything for the first couple floors, but has lower accuracy than most weapons. Swords have better accuracy and spears I believe have the most.

I lost track of what floor I got to, I think it was 12 or 13 before I got pinned in and chewed to death.

Difficulty names vary wildly depending on version. Regardless of version, the lowest difficulty setting is disallowed. I believe this is because that "Normal" mode lacks the true ending, like all good Konami games.

The difficulties are as follows:
pre:
J: Normal = PAL: Easy = NA: Children (disallowed for challenge)
J: Hard = PAL: Hard = NA: Easy
J: Very Hard = PAL: Very Hard = NA: Normal
J: Crazy Hard = PAL: Crazy Hard = NA: Hard
Very Hard and Crazy Hard require cheat codes to even attempt in Japanese and PAL versions; the North American version has these unlocked by default, and chose to rename them in a very misleading fashion. Someone in Konami of America must have thought very highly of his country's children.

The amount you miss even with a sword is loving stupid for how many hits it takes to kill later enemies, and with the animation slowing everything down further I'm getting pretty sick of this game. Holding a single direction down for 1-2 minutes per enemy is getting really old.
