Gameplay:
Basically right now most of the servers are Team Objective and Team Elimination. In TO maps you have some amazing objectives such as slaughtering filthy peasant NPCs and burning their houses down, or pushing a cart full of dead bodies. Team Elimination is just a straight out fight to the death, once a team is all dead everyone re-spawns and you do it again. Whoever wins the most rounds wins the match.

The game has unlocks. By using a certain class/weapon long enough, you unlock weapons in that chain. Each weapon has varying characteristics such as reach/length, damage, speed, etc. There's also a rank system, kind of like a level... Which insofar as I can tell has no effect other than letting people know how much of a bad rear end viking warrior you are.

Also, YOU CAN CHOP OFF PEOPLES HEADS, ARMS, AND LEGS and then laugh at them as they fall over gurgling and/or moaning as they die.

Classes:
From Official Site.

Archer

The Archer is the ranged weapon specialist, he is best used in a support role and to deliver damage on his enemies from far to mid range. Vulnerable in Melee.

Special ability
Rogue – Does +50% backstab damage.

Man-at-arms

The Man-at-arms is the lightest melee class, he relies heavily on his evasion and speed abilities to land hits without taking any.

Special ability
Elusive – Can perform dodges. (Side stepping by double tapping strafe)

Knight

The most powerful, tank melee unit on the battlefield. His damage output and armour levels are offset by his lack of agility and generally slower weapons.

Special ability
Tank – Can absorb additional damage and takes less stamina to block incoming blows.

Vanguard
The Vanguards are an imposing aggressive force that form the frontline of an army. Their weapons have extremely long reach and deal incredible damage.

Special ability
Charge – Can sprint attack into battle.

Bugs:
The game just came out, and as usual with unreal engine multiplayer games somehow the server list got bungled. There's a very simple fix though, available on their forums faq here. There's a couple other issues, nothing major though.

Buy it you filthy peasant, it's only $25.

I skipped WoTR after all my friends who pre-ordered said it was poo poo. This game is great though. loving great, totally brutal.

Another nice thing is the player base is mostly not poo poo.

I only wish my computer at work could run this game or I'd be playing right now instead of making a thread about it.

Only bugs I have run into are with the server list. The fix is above. It crashed a couple times for me as well on refresh, but not a big deal.

Pretty sure the developers are on point with this as it's their main project and so we'll probably see more content added and such.

Whar be the beans?

Not really impressed by Wotr compared to m&b warband, but I'm looking forward to some impressions of this by the m&b crew.

Some of the videos make the combat look like it is based more on weapon swing speed vs the simple but elegant 4 way attack/block from m&b. it looks like there are different attacks(thrust, swing extra.) but only one general block that seems to block them all.

I do like that it is first person which could really make for a more intense feeling in a large battle due to the lack of situational awareness.

There's 3 different kinds of attacks and 1 block button. Blocking with a single weapon requires timing while blocking with a shield requires that the shield actually connect with the weapon, otherwise they will still hit you.

I played a lot of M&B Warband online. Personally I think this game is more immersive and intense partly because the graphics/sounds are much better.

There is just one block, but it varies a little. Kicks cannot be blocked, and will open you up. Since it's forced first person, if you have a medium/large shield then your view is almost entirely obstructed when blocking.

If you have a two-hander you can still block, but the block only lasts a short time so you have to block right as the enemy is swinging at you or you'll miss the block.

All weapons have 3 swings, and the direction does matter in a lot of cases where you're fighting next to allies because doing a horizontal slash is likely to kill your buddies or your weapon will hit an obstacle thereby canceling the swing. You also can't see your weapon for part of the swing sometimes, so you may not even know you're attacking friendlies.

Most of the weapons are slash/overhead vertical/poke. However, there's some spear weapons which have a slash/quick poke/strong slow poke attack.

I agree playing with goons would be fun, I'd at least like to invade some servers with a group of goons. I have a mumble server we can use, which I was thinking about throwing in the OP or a PGS thread. I'm typically on after 6pm~ PST. If we get enough people together we can probably rent a server too.

That said I've had mixed experiences, it really just depends on who is on the server you join. There was actually some pretty not horrible people on a couple servers I've been on.

So blocking with a weapon gives you a window of time where you parry attacks while the block is active? Sort of like parry in Dark Souls? I'm assuming you can't just hold down block then(unless it is shield blocking).

Can't decide between the two still...although I'll probably opt for this one in the end. I do like the idea that you can't just spam attacks endlessly or hold an attack forever in Chivalry. Seems to me that's a little more realistic. Also you can chop off limbs...

Yes, tapping block when not using a sword will do a parry. You can also chain attacks by pressing the attack you want to do next wihle in the middle of your swing, and pressing Q while in a swing allows you to feign attack.

Blocking an attack does open up a window where you can counter-attack, depending on the speed of your weapon and who you're fighting.

You will eventually run out of stamina if you block every attack. If you run out of stamina you can't block anymore. Knights get more stamina than other classes, but they attack slower.

This game is pretty fun but doesn't have a whole lot of content.

No customization at all.
Very few unlocks.
No 64 player servers are up yet.
Archery is very simplistic. The archery in War of the Roses is a lot better.
Using things like torches is really buggy. The flames either don't show up or float a foot above your head.
Ballistas are bugged and you can spam 2 shots without reloading.
Needs more maps.

Other than these things it's still a lot of fun. Needs some patching though and a lot more content. I would wait a little while before paying full price.

It's true, if chopping peoples heads off for glory and screaming while charging into battle isn't enough then you may want to save that $25. Possibly you can use it to buy a new thatched roof for your peasant cottage.

Not sure how I missed this!

Oh, the one major bug is that customizing keybinds/graphics poo poo doesn't seem to save properly in some cases. I think they were a little rushed on their release date.

Oh and mouse changing sensitivity doesn't seem to do anything, even messing with the DPI on my mouse barely helps.

Been playing this pretty heavily since launch. Put in for the KS campaign but not the beta so I don't know how the game has changed since the beginning but I've got to say in its current state the game is really really fun. There's certain class things that bug me a lot but it's worth playing for $25. I'm not sure how the game is going to do in the long run, but the devs (who I've seen running around in servers) seem committed to adding as much content as possible.

This is a fun Source mod that was ported to the Unreal engine.

It is clearly still in a beta state and FOR NOW I would not recommend purchasing it. Definitely not for anything more than $5.

It has woefully poor performance on a machine that plays Crysis 2, Guild Wars, and BF3 on max settings with 40-60 FPS.

Plays like a prettier M&B:Warband with clunky controls, limited customization options, and the graphical performance is horrendous.

I'm a Warband whore and I love the concept so hopefully they will do something with that Kickstarter money relatively quickly.

Was holding off on War of the Roses because this looked prettier. Giving War of the Roses a try because apparently I have more money than I do sense.

I like the fact that if you need to be careful with the timing of your attacks and blocks instead of just going berserk all the time.

A moment that really stood out for me was during a game of team elimination on the Ruins level. There was just me (a knight) and an opposing player left and we were both looking for each other, shouting warcries and such. I went on top of one of the buildings to look out for him and there he was, a knight just below me on one of the walkways. We both saw each other at the same time, stopped, taunted each other at the same time and then had a massive duel which must've gone on for about a minute. He won in the end and chopped my head off but it was a good end to a good match.

I would agree that there isn't a lot of content at the minute with no customisation options and only a handful of maps. But the melee combat is so satisfying, you get a pretty decent felling of impact which is rare I find.

I think it's definitely worth the price of purchase. The devs seem committed to adding more stuff, it runs highly decently with some fiddling (had everything set to ULTRAMAX by default on my midlevel laptop so I had to spend some time fooling around), the unlocks in there at the moment are fine to work for and the maps all look really really cool. Plus it is a really loving good game that feels right. I miss directional blocking but I also like the parry, combo and cancel system in place.

Edit - Besides pressing x, I have also been enjoying hitting z-4-4 to laugh a hearty knightman laugh over, and over, and over again while sprinting after a retreating (and cowardly piece of poo poo) archer.

Yeah, the laugh is hysterical. I was sprinting around last night as a vanguard charging archers and laughing and I could tell it was working because when one finally downed me they all stood around bashing on my rotting corpse.
