I don't quite get why people don't like that they called it Bioshock. I mean if you consider Call of Duty, no-one really cares that Black Ops is in a different universe than Modern Warfare or the WW2 games. Just the name Bioshock has certain implications on the art and gameplay style

I find System Shock 2 far more replayable and a little more fun overall than System Shock 1, last 1/5th of the game not withstanding. But they're both cool games.

Bioshock is fine overall. Bioshock 2 has better gameplay than 1 but the plot is like impaling your inner ear with a screwdriver. Infinite will probably be better than both, kinda creepy helper character aside.

It's really not, unless you think the game is actually about how Communism is Evil.

Bioshock 2's plot wasn't the best, but the story of the prison, and Sinclair was really good, a new twisted side to rapture. Also, the art was amazing.

Did you guys play Minerva's Den? It's, IMO, the best Bioshock, despite being only ~3 hours long. Really great in every way.

The one thing I felt let down by with Bioshock 2 was the Big Sister idea. The concept changed from a single important character to a checkpoint boss encounter (who can somehow spawn from inside a broom closet, natch).

Seconding the Minerva's Den suggestions, it's absolutely fantastic although you'd be suicidal to play it before the two main games.

The idea of being hunted by a persistent AI character that can go anywhere on the map while playing an otherwise normal PvE game WAS pretty awesome I think. It wasn't executed perfectly but it's my favorite part of Bio 2 by far.

Some of the people behind Minerva's Den formed their own studio to make a game about exploring an abandoned house: http://thefullbrightcompany.com/gonehome/

It looks really unique.

This game gives me bad vibes. I cannot shake the feeling that this game will be simply, overpoweringly dumb. The aesthetic is impossible to take seriously as anything but broad-strokes farce, the setting lacks the plausibility Rapture had, they cast Troy Baker as the player character (not that he's a bad actor, it's just that he's usurped Steve Blum as "Generic White Male Voice", and his casting generally indicates a studio that doesn't give a poo poo about characterization), and the terminology they're using for plasmids and poo poo makes it sound like Nigel West loving Dickens is in charge of R&D.

Every part of this game just exudes dumb.

I agree that it won't be a day one purchase though. Bioshock was fun but it didn't live up to the hype, and was too much of a first-person shooter. Also the moral choice that wasn't was pretty stupid too.

Even better, they SECRETLY built a city at the bottom of the ocean, and not even that long ago. No one noticed the countless container ships and stuff that left one port on one side of the Atlantic and never arrived at the other, for a period of years and years.

It's the 50s, they did have computers in a sense. But you don't need computers to have people fill out shipping forms that have to be accounted for when the ships arrive at their destination.

The 50s isn't so different from our world today, you definitely couldn't hide a construction project of that magnitude anywhere, even in the middle of the ocean.

Surprised by all the negativity here (apart from cleavage-gate, which is indeed pretty ridiculous). This game just looks so campy and weird that I can't help but smile. Giant floating world fair/death star? Ham handed critiques of both American jingoism AND socialist revolution? Machine gun wielding George Washington automatons? An enormous mechanical eagle programmed specifically to feel betrayal?
There's just so many bizarre concepts being thrown together that, even if the game sucks, I'm sure it'll be fun to watch it blow apart into a pile of aesthetically stimulating incoherence.

Sometimes women have breasts. This is a statement that seems shocking to a lot of goons.

The entire game has a Steampunk vibe to it. Even as far as Steampunk dresses go, this is still mildly conservative. I don't know why I'm even trying to defend this, but seriously. We can't just jump down an art directors throat every time their females are wearing something more revealing than a burlap sack.

I mean, this is crazy right? We don't say that any handsome guy in a game is just eye candy for the ladies, so why is the opposite true for a pretty woman? I could see the point when and if a female character is overtly sexualized, but that doesn't even come close to describing what we've seen so far of Elizabeth in this game. All we really have to go on is that she has cleavage in the same manner that tops are sold for women every day all around the world.

I think at some point people are just looking for things to complain about and trying to white knight a female game character just seems really easy to do. If you really want to complain about the female form being objectified in the video game medium, maybe try the Dead or Alive thread or something.

Even ignoring the silliness of "Well, people don't complain about MEN", my problem is that it's kind of lovely art design.

My problem is that this character is portrayed as a child. She is innocent, naive and intentionally childish, up to and including playing around in a toy store when you go into one. Her facial art makes her look very young, even for the art style they're using here. It has more in common with the Little Sister than it does with any adult female. At the same time she is given a design with extremely deep cleavage. Such tops do exist in the real world but that doesn't make them neutral clothing.

It's an strange juxposition because you have an innocent childlike character and the design she has. It really looks like one face was pasted onto another body. It's gotten better since the initial reveal where she literally looked like a doe-eyed 10 year old anime girl but it's still weird. Her body and face basically look like they came from different characters and it strikes me as really poor art design, not to mention a little creepy.

And as far as the "It's Steampunk" goes:

This is the Empress from Dishonored. Notice how they managed to give her a completely reasonable outfit that is distinctive and unique.

Likewise, here's the art of Lady Boyle from the same game. The idea behind this picture is that Lady Boyle has the Best rear end In The Kingdom and the artist who painted it focused on that. Despite inherently being a picture which is literally defined by "check out that rear end" they still had the character clothed like this:

Now, not every game needs to do that, but the idea that the only possible clothing options are "cleavage dress on everything" or "burqa" is pretty silly. Dishonored is by people who worked on Bioshock 2 even, so I'm not pulling a random comparison out of my hat. The art design for Elizabeth is random and kind of dumb, which I think is why it stands out so much. The character is all over the place and 'reads' more like a laundry list of "things that make someone want to protect a character' instead of something more cohesive.

It's a shame because the rest of Bioshock Infinite's art design (at least from what we've seen) is pretty cohesive. Maybe the final product will surprise me but Elizabeth is one of the few things that feels wrong-footed to me, which is a surprise considering she's the single most important design in the game.

You guys don't like this game's weird aesthetic? Really? I think it's really cool and creative, and as impressive as Bioshock's water flowing graphics. Even better, actually, since it's 4 years later with all the engine improvements that brings. And the gameplay looks sort of similar to Bioshock's, but instead with more space to run around and shoot people, more fast-paced spectacle, and somewhat different gameplay mechanics (like the rifts that the woman does).

Are the disappointed people coming from a standpoint of liking Bioshock and not liking the different take this game has, or are they critical of Bioshock and thinking that this is too similar? It seems like a fine sequel to me, borne of at least some kind of artistic vision- that alone is pretty unique among video games.

The cleavage is stupid and I'm not convinced it wasn't deliberate for marketing or whatever, but the crazy eagle character and these weird semi-human robobosses are very interesting.

Probably my most anticipated game since they released the first trailer. Character designs look good, skyrails look awesome, and even if Elizabeth just amounts to "spawn ammo, environmental hazard, or cover," I think the gameplay is still going to be excellent. Rapture was such an amazing environment, and Bioshock is one of my favorite games ever, so I'm hoping Levine can knock it out of the park again. Also, totally hope you can just jump off the edge of Columbia for no drat reason whenever you want.

Oh yeah, I love the visual design across the board. There are only two things I'm worried about, that it will have some dumb-rear end, pointless morality system involving how you use your AI partner during combat (which will make you feel bad for playing the game in a fun way), and that it will be mostly linear and scripted, like it looks in some of the trailers.

Both of these could be not a problem at all in the game itself, but I really can't tell.

It's going to very likely be quite linear and very likely have a morality system of some kind. We've already seen that Elizabeth gets sick when she uses her power, so it'll probably be based on how often you have Elizabeth press herself. (i.e: She dies if you spam her abilities too much.)

If it's as scripted as Bioshock was that'd be fine, I think. Where you get sort of a large room (apparently, in this one, as large as a couple different levels connected by skyrails, according to that one initial gameplay video with the zeppelin) with some challenges to take on. A metroid style would be cool, but I don't think this team intends to make that kind of game.
