Thing that gets me about this is, yeah there were rumours that the internet spread over the last few years, and before that he was always thought of as "a bit odd", just in the way he acted. But now, looking back with hindsight at some of that old footage of his shows, you just thing "how the gently caress did people not notice what a creepy fucker he was?" I mean, I know the Panorama thing probably dug around to find the creepiest stuff they could, but still. I mean, I'm in my mid 30s so I was a kid when all of this was going out, and none of it registered to me at the time, clearly it didn't register to the kids that wrote in week after week, but surely some adult at some stage went "that guy's not right"? Then you look at his shows and it's week after week of doing showbiz favours for kids so he could get close to them and make them feel like they owed him something. Just ugh.

I'm sure there were people backstage at the BBC who thought "Ehhh, that's weird" but given that Saville was literally their biggest personality at the time (Oh and he was highly, HIGHLY litigious), it's not hard to see why they didn't say anything. There was a PE teacher at my school who was very well known for the same thing, or so the rumour went. We all heard that he was caught with a girl of 15 on more than one occasion but he was King poo poo, so nothing was done. She certainly didn't raise any issues about it and I doubt she was the first he took a shining to. By the time I started he was just getting into retirement stage and stayed at the School part time, but he hung around with the girls a lot and when you talk to them now they'll say how flirty he was. I had a friend who grew up in a well known children's home back in the 70's. She said that famous people used to regularly turn up and take 'good girls' out for treats. My friend was luckily a bad girl and considered too volatile and unpredictable to have been allowed to mix with the stars. At the time she saw it as punishment. Today she realises how lucky she was. That home has yet to be mentioned by the press. This is going to be huge, and I believe that Jimmy Savile is just the tip of the iceberg.

Thanks for answering my questions Zombie's Downfall. I actually already had my own answers for that (quite in line with yours, I might add) but it was kind of a statement of how humanity tends to do things in conflict with their own interests or morality pretty regularly. I assure you I didn't expect anyone to answer those, and I certainly didn't intend to derail conversation with political discussion. Back on topic-ish. I watched that video linked pretty early, not with Savile, but the other guy. I couldn't watch it for more than a few seconds. That is the most uncomfortable I've probably ever been with visual media, and that's saying a lot.

I met Jimmy Savile regularly when I worked for the Leeds General Infirmary in the mid 90s. He'd come in and annoy the staff (the old people adored the fucker), by pretending to 'porter' which meant if there was a press camera nearby he'd push a patient a few yards, all jolly and carefree. If there were no cameras around he didn't want to know. He once boasted about a bracelet he was wearing, solid gold with 24 one carat diamonds set in the face; apparently there were only two in existence and Mike Tyson had the other one. Maybe a secret club for sex offenders bracelet. He put it in my hand to let me feel the weight of it (as if I loving cared) and our hands touched briefly, and even then my skin crawled. Savile was never allowed near our mortuary, and he wasn't supposed to be near children's wards alone. Rumours, you see. He was genuinely a creepy man to have around, and bear in mind that back then we'd all heard rumours about him and children (and corpses), but nobody actually believed them, not really. He was creepy and said lots of inappropriate things but we never thought he actually was a nonce.

To anyone who is surprised that a large amount of allegations are being made all at once, this isn't a rare pattern at all. Think of how the crimes that were comitted by pedophiliac priests and covered up by the churches seemed to come out all at once not too long ago. In 2010, it was uncovered that one of Germany's most prestigious boarding schools had for decades been run as a front for a pederast ring. Within short time 130+ victims came forward, accusing 10 teachers, 6 of which were found guilty. Some of the victims have said they are certain lots of people knew or should have known what was going on at the school, yet no one did anything. But with sudden media attention victims whom no one cared about before realize they will be heard if they speak up now. So they do. Plus it seems that until very recently, a certain level of social status made people immune to sex crime accusations, so even if anyone spoke up then, nothing came of it.

This whole scandal is really eye-opening to me because I never had any idea that there was anything "off" abut Saville. Perhaps I'm too young. Never really saw him in anything, he was just an eccentric figure and a has-been, old weirdo. But it turns out that plenty of people had some idea that something wasn't right about him, there were plenty of rumours. It makes you wonder how the hell he kept it an open secret (because it sounds like that's what it was) until the day he died. How does that happen, even through more than one wave of moral panic about paedophiles chased up by the press? Because it's true (I guess?) that things were different in the 60s, the 70s, the 80s. But he only died last year. It seems incredible that he got away with it all.
