Jimmy Savile wasn't enabled to be a monster because he had a penis or a Y chromosome. He got away with it because he was a powerful individual inside an institution which resisted his discrediting, even though probably 95% of the members of that institution were personally against the systematic surprise sex of children.

I was watching something about this on BBC News 24 the other day and two people were discussing it in front of a really inappropriate GIGANTIC picture of the man with a creepy smile and hands outstretched. It was like they'd purposely chosen the most comedy villain-like photo of him they could find.

When he died, there was a sort of 'lying in state' at the Queens Hotel for him in Leeds. People literally queued around the block to pay their respects. I'm too young to have really had any impression of the guy at all, that was pretty strange though.

Isn't it slightly unusual for someone known from a kid's show to be seen with a cigar all the time? Not that I'm against it, but it seems like something that wouldn't fly in today's ultra-anti-tobacco society. Showing people smoking cigarettes in a movie practically qualifies it for an R rating nowadays.

We live in a world now where man + child = peado. This includes fathers and their children, teachers and their students, doctors and their patients. Those things that have happened since the dawn of recorded history are now wrong and inherently evil. "Don't leave that man alone with his daughter, he might try and surprise sex her!" And there isn't too much to be said that hasn't already been covered (he looks creepy, how people in authority can get away with child abuse, molesting kids is bad etc.) It just so happened that not only was your comment stupid, it brought up something new and relevant to the issue because it illustrates exactly the kind of overreaction we need to be careful about in issues like this. Not to mention that the reason more men appear to be predatory paedophiles in this manner is probably linked with the fact that men have historically been much more likely to be in positions of power than women. It's hard enough for victims to come forward about abuse committed by someone noone has heard of, let alone a household name. Also to the arseholes who think the number of victims isn't plausible, it wasn't 300 kids at once. It was 300 vulnerable individual kids who each thought they were all alone in this and that nobody would believe them. Saying poo poo like "they're just in it for the money" only serves to reinforce that feeling in kids who are still suffering abuse now.

The really terrible thing about all of this is that it was sort of seen as an open secret that there was something going on there. I mean, there's videos of him leching over teenage girls and even being overly touchy with them (there was one, rather infamous one, where he was pretty much openly groping Coleen Nolan on Top of the Pops) It makes me wonder how many of these supposed rumors that couldn't really be proved for whatever reason are actually true. e: To clarify, the supposed rumours about other celebrities. A lot of urban legends are thrown around about these sorts of people all the time, I'm wondering if there's a case that some of them might actually be true. I'm from the UK and I don't know anyone who ever liked Jimmy Saville. I don't know if its just the older generation that liked him, but he always came off reaaally creepy to me. Like father christmas' pedophile brother. Apparently there were rumours about him for decades and nobody did anything about it. There was even that fake transcript of an episode of Have I Got News For You? where everyone ripped into him for being a pedophile.
