My guess, and this is a complete guess mind you, that it might because those engines have massive combustion chambers. Rocket motors conceptually are very simple things, the combustion chamber is only a giant exploding mixing room for the nozzles. Edit: Oh, new page. Have this Spaceflight Megathread 2.0 ![]() Click for huge. rcman50166 fucked around with this message at Feb 18, 2013 around 05:54 |

Zero One posted:Just the VAB tour. They take you out almost to the Cape to see a bunch of the pads. Then to the VAB itself. Then around Pad 34-A and B. Then over to the Saturn V center. The Cape Canaveral Tour is a great one also; and if they are still doing Launch Control definitely that one too. They should be about $25/tour since you have the pass.

CombatInformatiker posted:Why does the lower left engine appear to be empty? First off, the bell of the engine is hiding the plumbing that is visible around the other engines. For why it seems to end in a gray plate at the back, I'll venture two possibilities: 1) If it's a real working version, it would be logical to have shut-offs at the top of the bell to keep birds, spiders, and other varmints from getting up into the more delicate parts of the system. These would be opened in the last few minutes before lift-off to ensure everything was kept clean. 2) It's also possible that this isn't really a functioning rocket. The bells may just bolted to the bottom of the first stage, without any connection to the plumbing (that may or may not exist where no one can see). It's the same size as the original so it gets across how big it was, but time and decay have rendered the original 1st stage too delicate to mount. I've been to KSC several times, but I can't remember which of those scenarios is more likely.

CombatInformatiker posted:Sorry, what I meant was: why can you see the white paint through an apparent hole in the top of the nozzle? Is that actually a hole? Upon closer inspection it does just appear to be closed. I see this a lot in museum displays, they hollow out the parts on the inside for either other displays, to sell, to research, or to deactivate and they cap it to make it not look like an empty shell. The tank museum over where I live does this.

I think this was the thread were it was posted, I'm looking for the short story that was posted about Earth bring invaded. The aliens invading had ships that could traverse the universe but were less advanced when it came to warfare to earthlings. If anybody knew the story I was talking about and could link it Id appreciate it. Thanks.

How many pages should we go to before I start a new thread? I forgot what we did last time? I also am stunned that these two threads have been so successful!

I think the last thread was less pages than this one when a mod came by to stop one of the Buran vs Shuttle fights that break out from time to time.

Aye. Maybe I'll stop it at 100 then.

The premise was that most civilizations discovered the means for gravity manipulation and FTL travel during their equivalent Age Of Sail/early Industrial Age and so never really progressed technologically beyond that point because of the vast open spaces and resources FTL and gravity manipulation opened up. It's called "The Road Not Taken" and is a really good read. http://pastebin.com/aJQfubrK

Making a new thread gets a little more attention, forces someone to make an updated OP, and makes it easier to follow for someone new because they doesn't have to jump in to the middle of a 300-page discussion. Even if it isn't necessary to stop crashing the forums any more.

I nominate Zaran for his excellent effort posts for launches
