What is Assassin's Creed

Wikipedia posted:

The main story arc of the series revolves around a bartender named Desmond Miles as he is captured by megacorporation Abstergo Industries. Using a machine known as the Animus, Desmond is forced to relive the memories of his ancestors, who were all assassins, in order to recover artifacts, called the "Pieces of Eden", for Abstergo. While the original assassin ancestor of Desmond is Altaïr Ibn la-Ahad, the most recent games feature another assassin from Renaissance Italy named Ezio Auditore da Firenze. Assassination targets are mostly actual historical figures, although the timelines for their lives and causes of death have been changed to suit the games' plot (in-game these inaccuracies are attributed to the Templars rewriting history to cover up their actions, as well as honest mistakes on the part of historians).

The gameplay varies slightly from game to game, consisting of a mixture of action and adventure with a heavy emphasis on stealth and parkour in open world recreations of historical cities.

Desmond must now use the Animus to access the memories of Connor Kenway, otherwise known as Ratohnhaké:ton a half-Mohawk, half-English Assassin during the American Revolution.

The final chapter of Desmond's story features both the ending of his journey against the Templar as well as a new ancestor.
The final steps of his journey take Desmond into the Grand Temple, in a final attempt to stop the Templars...and prevent a catastrophic event on a global scale.

Inside the Animus you will relive Colonial America, where the Assassin-Templar war has become involved in the American Revolution.
A new protagonist Ratonhnhaké:ton, also known as Connor, is drawn into the conflict when his home is attacked by European colonists.
Taking place between 1753 and 1783, the player will be able to explore Boston, New York as well as the American Colonial Frontier.
This frontier includes forest, cliffs, rivers, Connor's Mohawk village, and the settlements of Lexington, Concord and Charlestown. Philadelphia is mentioned but not confirmed playable.

  • A new engine, allowing large amounts of npc's on the screen.
  • A new combat system, new counters, new weapons, new animations.
  • A new, full length storyline for Conner.
  • Resolution to Desmond's story.
  • Naval Warfare.
  • Hunting.
  • The ability to climb on, and parkour over trees and other environmental objects.
  • The frontier will be at least 1.5 times the size of Brotherhood's Rome.
  • Extended and improved multiplayer.
  • Limited ability to walk or parkour through homes and buildings.

Currently there are 5 DLC planned, of which 3 form an alternate-universe storyline called The Tyranny of King George.
The other two as most likely Multiplayer related.

quote:

Ubisoft has revealed that the first downloadable content released for Assassin’s Creed III will be an alternate history single-player campaign titled The Tyranny of King George.

The DLC campaign will span three episodic content packs, and will be released on all platforms; Xbox 360, PS3, PC, and Wii U. The Tyranny of King George‘s story starts at the close of the American Revolutionary War and tells an alternate history tale where George Washington decides to become a King of the new country, instead of its reluctant first President.
“As the revolution comes to a close, a new and most unexpected enemy emerges. Driven by the desire to secure the fate of the colonies, the greatest hero of the revolution, George Washington, succumbs to the temptation of infinite power. The new King is born and his reign leaves no one untouched. To return freedom to the land our new hero must dethrone a tyrant he once called friend.”

The game will be sold in many different editions, each with different additional content, artwork or collector's items.
Like with Brotherhood, users playing on the Playstation 3 will be able to get platform exclusive DLC. This DLC pack is called "The Benedict Arnold Missions".

Assassin's Creed III: Liberation, developed and published by Ubisoft, is an upcoming game for the PlayStation Vita.
It will be released on 30 October 2012; same same day as it's "big brother" Assassin's Creed 3.

The game is set in New Orleans between 1765 and 1780, and features Aveline de Grandpré, a female African-French Assassin.
Aveline is recruited to the Assassin Brotherhood by Agate, an escaped slave, who acts as her mentor.
The plot of the game involves the cultural practice of plaçage, where wealthy French and Spanish men have an arranged marriage with a woman of African, Indian or Creole descent, thus allowing those women and their children to gain power, wealth and positions of power in society.
In addition to New Orleans the player will be able to visit "The Bayou" (Much like the Frontier in Assassin's Creed III) and across the gulf of Mexico into Mexico.
Aveline will cross paths with Assassin's Creed III protagonist Connor Kenway in the game.

Assassin's Creed

Desmond Miles is a bartender who is kidnapped by a powerful corporation called Abstergo, a modern day Templar organization. Desmond is informed that he can use a machine called the Animus created by Abstergo to relive his ancestors' memories.
Through this machine he relives the Holy Land of 1191 and the memories of his ancestor Altaïr ibn-La'Ahad.

Altaïr is a disgraced assassin because he broke the tenets of the Assassin's Creed and in order to regain his former status, Altaïr must hunt down nine key targets.
After assassinating all nine targets and discovering that his ninth target was in fact a trap, Altaïr confronts Robert, the leader of the Knights Templar.
Upon dying, Robert confesses to Altaïr that there were not nine, but ten Templars conspiring to take the Piece of Eden. The tenth Templar is the head of the Assassins, Al Mualim, who wanted to keep the Piece of Eden for himself and therefore sent out Altaïr to kill the others.
Back at Masyaf, the assassin's fortress, Al Mualim had taken over the minds of the people inside. Altaïr uses his unique gift of Eagle Vision to overcome the Apple's illusion and manages to kill Al Mualim. This was the memory Abstergo was searching for,but it reveals it is only just one of 28 pieces of Eden that are scattered across the world.

Back in 2012, Desmond is left alone in the Animus room by an Abstergo Employee named Lucy. With use of Altaïr's Eagle Vision inherited from the "Bleeding Effect" caused by the Animus, he sees many symbols drawn in blood on the wall in his room and on the floors of the lab.
These symbols contain references to the end of the world in many different languages and in the left side of his room, the player sees "I Entered the Animus and never returned".

Assassin's Creed 2

With the help Lucy, Desmond escapes Abstergo. Lucy brings him to a hideout and introduces Desmond to her Assassin allies Shaun and Rebecca. Aware of the Templars' intentions to gather the Pieces of Eden, Desmond volunteers to enter the Animus again, and explore the memories of Ezio Auditore da Firenze.
By doing this he hopes to gain Ezio's knowledge and abilities through the Bleeding Effect.

Ezio was a nobleman in the Florence of 1476, growing up in a luxurious and carefree lifestyle.
That is until Ezio's father and brothers are executed by the hand of Uberto Alberti, a Templar.
Ezio kills Uberto in revenge, and after fleeing with his mother and sister to their villa in Monteriggioni, he learns of his Assassin heritage and begins training under his uncle Mario. Ezio also befriends local inventor Leonardo da Vinci, who helps Ezio with his work by decoding an encrypted codex that contains Altaïr's memories.
Over the course of a decade Ezio assassinates the many conspirators involved in his father's death, leaving only Rodrigo Borgia.
Rodrigo Borgia has obtained the Apple of Eden, which Ezio takes from him by force.

Years later Rodrigo Borgia is now the Pope and has in his possession the Papal Staff, another Piece of Eden. He attempts to use it to enter a vault that a prophet as described in Altair's codex must enter.
Ezio intercepts Borgia, but spares his life, and enters the vault himself. He encounters the hologram of a woman, who claims to come from a civilization before ours. Minerva tells of a great disaster that had befallen and destroyed her civilization, and warns that it will occur again soon. Talking directly to Desmond, she tells him "The rest is up to you," leaving Ezio extremely confused.

Desmond is pulled out of the Animus as Abstergo has located their hideout. He, Lucy and the rest of the team manage to flee to safety, and soon prepare to return Desmond to the Animus to search for clues that may help them.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

This game takes place directly after AC2, both for Desmond and Ezio.
Confused Ezio returns to the city of Monteriggioni. After spending the night with Caterina Sforza, he wakes up to find the city besieged by Cesare Borgia; who steals the apple of Eden.
Wanting to exact justice and retrieve the Apple, Ezio travels to Rome in order to liberate its people from the influence of the Borgia family.
After liberating and rebuilding Rome Ezio goes to the Castel Sant'Angelo to assassinate Cesare and Rodrigo Borgia. When Ezio arrives he sees Cesare kill Rodrigo by forcing him to eat a poisoned apple.
Ezio chases Cesare to the Apple of Eden and manages to claim it. Cesare is arrested and imprisoned in Viana, Spain, however he manages to escape.
After securing the Apple in another vault, Ezio travels to Viana where he kills Cesare.
In the real world Desmond, Lucy, Rebecca and Shaun find that the Apple of Eden was hidden under the Colosseum by Ezio. They search for the Apple and finally find it, then Juno, another of "Those Who Came Before," controls Desmond with the Apple and makes him stab Lucy. She also warns that the next great disaster is coming soon.
The effects of the Animus and control by Juno make Desmond fall into Coma.

Assassin's Creed: Revelations

Desmond, now comatose, has been placed into the Animus, where he finds himself in a new area called the Black Room; a failsafe mode of the Animus.
Because of his prolonged exposure to the Animus his mind, Ezio's and Altair's are hard to seperate; only by reliving all the memories left by Altair and Ezio he will be able to seperate himself and wake up.

This takes the Story to Ezio in the year 1511 who continues his search to find out more about the origins of the Assassin Order and connections to Altaïr's past.
Ezio is after the 5 keys needed to unlock Altaïr's library under the ruins of the Assassin castle at Masyaf, these keys are imprinted with Altair's memories about crucial parts of his life; allowing Ezio to relive them.
The search leads Ezio to make his way to Ottoman-era Istanbul, where the Assassin Guild there, led by Master Assassin Yusuf Tazim, takes him in as Grand Mentor.
After mistakenly killing a man sent to stop the Templars, Ezio travels to Cappodocia to free his men and kill the man responsible for arming the Templars. Once the final key is retrieved, Ezio travels to Masyaf and discovers not a library, but a vault with Altaïr's remains. Altair's holds another key showing the location of an Apple of Eden, which Ezio leaves, stating that he has "seen enough for one lifetime." He then speaks with Desmond through the void, leaving his hidden blades and sword behind.
Through Ezio another "One that came before" contacts Desmond, informing him of a "Grand Temple" which he needs to find. With help of what'ss inside Desmond is tasked with stopping the Templar's and an incoming solarflare from wiping out humanity. With his mind now focused, Desmond wakes up knowing where to go.

The previously mentioned Desmond trailer also has a decent recap.

I watched that Desmond trailer, because I was unaware it existed before this thread.

Hello John de Lancie, nice of you to give us a voice-over for this fine game.

As an aside, is there anything especially crucial to the story of the series that I'd be missing were I to go in without having played or watched Brotherhood and Revelations? Geop's LPs are great, but drat they take ages to put together.

I'd recommend watching the end of Revelations as well, it sets up the end-game for the Desmond story pretty well, and is a decent resolution for Ezio. Just ignore the bizarre CG cutscene in the middle.

The only one I know of was that if you played Brotherhood MP you got an extra playable character in Revelations MP.

This got left in the last thread, so I'll ask again: is there any interest for an ACIII MP metatag? I could set one up later tonight if people are into it.

So if I want all 3 of those George Washington single player DLC packs, the smart play is just to get the season pass, right? I have no interest in multiplayer but the price will be the same as far as I can tell. I want all the single player DLC, but it sounds like that GW story is the only retailer-agnostic stuff announced so far, right? There are plenty of pre-order bonus missions but everyone seems to think those won't be available for purchase any time soon. I'm getting it at Amazon because I can redeem some credit card reward points on it, and Amazon doesn't have any exclusive single player content.

I used to be worried that the story was going to be a too bland and cartoony version of the revolution, but I don't care anymore, I just want to stab some dudes. If I can stab dudes AND see a somewhat nuanced (or at least innovatively fictional) version of the revolution in game form, I'll be extra happy, but it definitely isn't required.
