Our infield was still gonna have all the range of a turtle on pot, but at least we'll probably have a bullpen that can do its job without giving us a heart attack and a DH who can. Peralta was probably the best of the potential FAs at short this season, so it was clearly a good idea to keep him for relatively cheap. A good way to help his defense would be to have a competent 3B, but welp.

It's kinda funny hearing some Tigers fans assume that this year was a down year for him offensively, and that he'll just bounce back next season. He's had an OPS+ under league average for 4 of his 8 full MLB seasons. Luckily he doesn't need to hit that well, since he plays excellent defense

I like Peralta cause he's one of those dudes who either hits well above or well below his career average while never actually having a "normal" season.

His line is kind of weird, but I think it's safe to put the expectation of his OPS+ above 85. I think his median outcome is "above-average offensive SS," which is worth $6M.

Yeah, like I said, I don't have a problem with them picking up the option with the lack of other decent players available at SS. Detroit will still have issues giving outs away on the defense, but at least the offense should be improved overall.

Senf posted:That is exactly why I chose it Giants are in a weird spot with Brian Wilson. He's coming off his 2nd Tommy John surgery, and even before the injury, his velocity was trending way down: ![]() His cutter is good but not like, Mariano good, and I don't think he can blow his fastball by people anymore. So I'd really rather not offer him arb if he's going to make $10 million. (Would he get less after missing a whole season?) We should nontender him and try to work out a cheap contract; I doubt anyone else is waiting to shower him with cash. But that might not go over well with the fans. See, Wilson was our biggest cheerleader, even our mascot, in the playoff run. I don't care about that, but I think the organization does. I think he'll be a Giant next year. The White Sox also exercised their option on Floyd (not-surprising) and declined theirs on Myers and Youk. I would not be surprised if they go after Youk for less money, while I think they might let Myers go. There's also a performance threshold on the Peavy deal that lets him stay for $15 million in 2015 if he meets goals in 2013-14.

I really like the Peavy move - there was no way that his option was going to get exercised, so I like that they seem to have worked out a compromise. The Floyd move was a no-brainer.

That's OK with me for now since the division is still pretty awful, but I'm curious to see what else they'll do this offseason. With a little more luck last year Peavy would have been regarded as one of the better pitchers in the AL last year.

The option was $22MM, way too much. He had 219 IP last year, with a 3.37 ERA, 1.096 WHIP, and 129 ERA+. At $14.5MM/year, I'd take that gamble. If he gets hurt again, well, we've been paying through the nose for an injured Jake Peavy since 2009, so it'd probably just feel comforting and warm like an old blanket.

The deal's only two years unless he stays healthy and pitches well, in which case it's three. People have been talking about how Kyle Lohse - who is older and shittier than Peavy, and also brittle - is going to get like 5 years $60 million so uh....awesome.

I didn't think he be able to command quite that much cash, but it's not a bad deal at all. Also: totally agree with you Pussy Boss (never thought I'd type that out but here we are). Giants seem to dig their cheerleaders a bit and I can see a few post-2010-like contracts thrown around this off-season. The White Sox rotation is going to be extremely interesting and probably the biggest wild card rotation in baseball next year (except for maybe the Mets'). I have no idea what's going to happen with Danks, Floyd or Peavy, and while Sale seems like he's going to be OK he did slow down a little bit toward the end of the season. Things could really go down the toilet and the rotation could be a tire fire, or it could be almost as good as Detroit's. As always, I guess the hope is that Don Cooper knows more about pitching than almost anyone else in the league. e: Regarding the Giants, I'm fine with Scutaro getting a three year deal. Not much going on at that position in their system so even if he regresses to his mean there wouldn't be too many other options out there.
