Keith Law thinks it's a great deal and I'm inclined to agree. There are rumblings on White Sox boards that this was done partially to make moving Floyd easier, but I honestly don't see why they would move Floyd at something of a nadir for his value.

By a strange coincidence, Marco Scutaro turned 37 today. (Happy birthday Marco.) Yep, just about ready to enter his prime!

I fully expect they will overpay Pagan, give Scutaro too many years, and pay Hunter Pence about $12 million in arbitration. And it's hard to be too critical since I'd like all three of them back next year, but I think we're gonna overpay for all of them.

I'm fine with three years of below-average Scutaro, since he's also proven an acceptable makeshift third baseman should Sandoval become too obese to play down the road.

I don't think they'll keep Wilson, he's pricey for a reliever and anything marketing gets out of him being CRAAAAAYZZZYY (which I think is a lot less than two years ago) has been made up by the success of the panda giraffe stuff.

If they do keep him, then they get rid of Affeldt, and he's more due to be overpaid even if Mijares is a well priced substitute.

The problem isn't paying for 3 years of below-average Scutaro, it's that you're quite possibly paying for one year of below-average and two of dumpster bus fire.

Gonna come out now and say that if Scutaro regresses and plays how he did for the first 100 games or so of last year then you would instantly hate a 3 year deal. And the dude is going to regress.

Gotta love that .385OBP with only 13 walks, though.

It gives them a year to find a replacement 2B, and then he can be a waste of cash for all I care. The 2B market in free agents is pretty crappy this offseason, and Marco wants to play there again.

2011 and 2012 have made me skittish, I guess, because the FO hasn't proved itself to have any depth to replace anyone. They've had guys go down and not know how to handle it: Posey's injury basically doomed the season but was handled okay, but Freddy Sanchez was simply expected to return and the team looked more and more stupid as he piled on the injuries. Sandoval's absence for hamate surgery resulted in a sad parade of Quad A guys. It's not like the A's where Cespy and McCarthy and Colon can disappear all at once and it's okay because Beane had a second good hand of cards in his back pocket the whole time. That kind of depth can only be envied, even if it is pitcher heavy.

And despite not playing third in four years, Scutaro prevented us from seeing more Conor Gillaspie or Manny Burriss when Sandoval got hurt again. That is okay by me since I love the fat man but wouldn't really call him reliable given his weight issues.

I thought about disputing this, but is there a consensus on who the top 3-5 GMs in baseball are? It's actually tough to look down the list and find guys who are even consistently good.

Friedman, yes. Beane? Daniels? Is Wren actually a good GM? Walt Jocketty seems to be pretty drat consistent. Huntington seems solid, but the Pirates still suck. Mike Rizzo?

Maybe now that Epstein isn't technically a GM, but I think he's clearly behind Friedman and Beane at least. I think there are a fair number of dudes who it's hard to say definitively would do worse given Cashman's huge advantages.

Abel Wingnut
Dec 23, 2002

Friedman's probably my top GM. His ability to draft and sign talent is unparalleled. Cashman would probably place right behind him. He understands and exploits his position perfectly. I can only imagine how good the Yankees'd be without Hal and Hank going overhead on A-Rod and Soriano. After that it gets murky and I'd have to spend a lot more time researching to figure it out.

Yea, I have no idea what's up with Beane. He seemed content fleecing Arizona for a while and then this year happened. Another thing I'd have to look into more.

Having not really seen Pence play before this postseason, does he always look like he's done a lot of meth and end up on one knee after every swing? Seeing him play was probably the most bizarre thing I witnessed in an offseason that featured LCS MVP Delmon Young

Speaking of which, hooray. I was really concerned the Tigers would stick Delmon in LF next year. Of course, they are going to tender Brennan Boesch and have Quentin Berry 'compete' in Spring Training.

Because when you have a guy with a 7 year track record of being bad at baseball, it's key to decide he should be on the team based off a couple of weeks of exhibition games against minor leaguers.

Rizzo falls off the list for me due to his completely inept handling of Strasburg.

Too early to tell I guess, but I like what Jeff Luhnow has done with the Astros thus far. Specifically, this entails "realize they're gonna suck for a while so they might as well sell vets for prospects and play kids." Plus he was on board when the Cardinals drafted players that are actually good at baseball so I'm hoping he can turn the Astros around quickly.

Trade Joel Hanrahan.

I will probably not make a single future post ITT that doesn't involve the Pirates needing to trade Joel Hanrahan, because it is seriously the most important thing for them to do.

e: vvv It's a dumb contract, but it's probably not going to be in the top 5 worst of the offseason. $7M just isn't enough to have a serious impact on that team.

It's the 2012 version of Aubrey Huff's last contract. Whatever contract he gets is going to be a terrible contract, but I don't care that much, since it's probably not going to hamstring the Giants, it's not my money, and he did just play a crucial, highly-visible role in winning a World Series. This is probably how I will feel about all Giants off-season moves tbqh.
