This might be a dumb question, but, were I to take advantage of the $15 upgrade offer (I bought a new computer about a month ago), is there any reason I couldn't just download the upgrade, throw the DVD in a box, and forget about it til Windows 8 has some more bugfixes/maybe a service pack or two under its belt? (I know I can only get the price deal til the end of January, but it wouldn't invalidate the upgrade itself after that, right?) For that matter, is there an easy way, with the upgrade, to set up a dual boot system (I presently have 7 Home Premium 64-bit if that makes a difference)?

I don't believe that functionality exists. I'm in the same boat and am trying to switch my gamertag from my old email address to the new Microsoft account I use with Windows 8. Unfortunately when I had run the Games app awhile ago it created a generic gamertag under my new email address, now I have to wait until 30 days are over until I can get the gamertag switched. On windows phone the only way to do that is change to the email you want on an Xbox, wait a it to be sure it took, then hard reset your phone. I'm wondering if its the same, remove your metro account and then re-add it after? Also unless something has changed you can't just port over your old Xbox live account. Your gamertag is already in use, you can't move your stats, etc. Changing the email is the only way to sync them and it has to be done from the Xbox itself. Ahh yes that would be the easiest route, as long as his new address is @outlook, hotmail, or live. I'm using a personal domain email and it unfortunately doesn't give you the option to use your own.

Two questions: 1) Where the hell is the "Modern/Metro" IE10? Whenever I search for Internet Explorer all I see is the standard desktop one. 2) Apparently google has a version of Chrome out that hooks into the "Modern" interface? Whenever I search for it in the app store, it redirects me to the basic Chrome downloader.

If it is always opening in desktop mode, you can fix that by going into the settings for IE10. Go to Internet Options, Programs, then under Opening Internet Explorer you can tell it to open always in Internet Explorer (not the desktop version), and uncheck the option that tells it to open tiles on the desktop. When I installed it it automatically created a link to the metro version on the metro "desktop". I went to the trouble of disabling that because I prefer the desktop version. I don't have a touchscreen laptop, so...

I saw a screenshot someone in these forums did of their win8 setup and they had the finance app having multiple tiles with a separate stock in each. So one had apples price, one had msft, etc. How is that done? Also, is there no easy way to add your music/pictures/videos from a NAS to the windows library? I have all mine on the network and I can't add them to any of the programs that use the library for their content.

Pin them to the Metro board if you need them frequently. I use Metro as a sort of Start button, which I guess was the intent of it for desktop users. (I know I can only get the price deal til the end of January, but it wouldn't invalidate the upgrade itself after that, right?) Not sure if someone got to you on this yet, but basically I've ran the $15 deal once and will again soon; Basically, after you get your promo code, run the Upgrade Assistant. After it tells you about your system, it will give you an option to make the upgrade purchase at $40. Give them your info, and before hitting the final check out you will have a prompt to enter in your promo code. It will change your purchase to the correct price. After the purchase and download, you will get some options - start the installer immediately (and what to keep / wipe), or you can put it in a backup source like a different hard drive / volume / flash drive or as an iso. You can save and hang on to your iso for as long as you like; from what others have said, just keep your Windows 8 key handy and it can either do an upgrade or a clean install on your machine. Hope that makes sense.

Well here's some interesting discovery about windows 8. Nothing brand new but still worth a heads up because I just hit it in a hard, frustrating way. HP (and possibly others, but i'm confirming here tonight that HP) is shipping most (all?) of their Windows 8 computers with something called UEFI Secure Boot. They tout it as a security feature, but what it bluntly means is this: - You can not boot anything but windows 8 on this computer. Period - This includes things like Linux, usb boot utilities for backup/virus removal, hacintosh type stuff, etc And as I found out the hard way tonight, you can not install Windows 7 on a brand new HP computer anymore. Has zip zilch nothing to do with driver support. The UEFI sees you've popped in a disk that isnt windows 8 and blocks your boot with a message saying the signature is not valid. Dell and some others offer the ability to turn this off, HP does not. Just a word of warning. Win 8 is awesome and there arent many situations I advise someone try to go to Win 7 or linux instead...but if you buy an HP right now the choice is taken away from you. A frustrating realization when I've already bought it and told my client I would put Win 7 on it for a while until the whole company was ready to go Win 8.

Unless I'm just too dumb to find it I've been trying every key under the sun for an hour, as well as doing mucho googling, and there seems to be no way to even enter any kind of bios settings for this computer. Closest I can get is windows 8's boot options menu, but they dont let you change a thing from there. Edit: Annnd to add icing to the cake, they ship it with VT-x locked in the OFF position even though it has a loving i3 processor onboard. What a piece of crap. EDIT 2 WITH VICTORY: WAIT, I found it! You boot holding escape, then choose configuration, then you go past a red warning screen, then you can both turn on VT-x and disable secure boot. Sorry to have sounded like a raging idiot earlier, but it's infuriating to me they make this so difficult. At least there is a way around. Thanks for the prod in the right direction. chedemefedeme fucked around with this message at Oct 31, 2012 around 23:09 |

This page at HP (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...cname=c00034791) says "after pressing the power button, repeatedly press the Esc key to enter the Start Up Menu, and follow the prompt to press F10 to enter the BIOS Setup." - I'd try that in addition to holding F1/F10/Space or many random keys while booting up, that's always been a good way to generate a "Keyboard error - press F1 to continue or F10 to enter BIOS" type menu. EDIT: ^ There ya go!

By the way, the Secure Boot thing isn't just HP. To get the Windows 8 certification, every manufacturer has to turn on Secure Boot by default. Fortunately, they also require that all manufacturers let you turn it off for x86/x64 machines. ARM systems are a different story; you have to hope your OS vendor bought a key from Microsoft/Verisign, or you have to shell out $100 and sign everything yourself.mediaphage posted:I'd it Windows 8 Pro?
