Anyone managed to get Arcsoft Total Media Theatre 3 to work on this. It keeps throwing up an error message about couldn't initialise a video overlay. This is on a Clevo W170HR laptop, with an nVidia 555m, nVidia Optimus and an Intel HD3000. Latest Win8 supporting drivers for both graphics are installed and it makes no difference if I choose to run it on Intel or nVidia graphics.

So I rebooted retail Win8 to install new updates, and suddenly PS3mediaserver & my PS3 can no longer communicate. Anyone have an idea? I've poked through the firewall rules but don't see an obvious difference. edit: frustratingly the servers-per-user-account-that-I-don't-understand-how-to-use show up, but not PS3mediasever. At this point I wouldn't mind just streaming MP3s, but I need videos on again eventually. I'm using Win8 Pro. I've tried explicitly enabling upnp discovery and "wireless portable devices devices-in" through the advanced section of the Windows Firewall (which seem to cover the main upnp ports), but no dice. edit2: found this thread, but following the instructions doesn't seem to have helped. Also took me a while to figure out that the Metro settings are on a pop-up menu from idling the mouse on the right-hand side. teethgrinder fucked around with this message at Nov 1, 2012 around 02:41 |

Is anybody else getting inundated with Windows Defender updates? I'm getting Windows Update notifications 1 or 2 times a day, usually just for a virus definition update. I have my Windows Update settings set to Download automatically, but to let me choose whether to install them. I don't like that these definition updates are now tied to Windows Update. That seems a step back from Windows Security Essentials. Anyway to make it so Windows Defender updates itself automatically?

This seems like the standard post-XP Windows Defender/Windows Security Essentials experience to me. I have the same setting on Windows Update and it usually nags me once a day. Two clicks later, it's dealt with, but it's so annoying that I switched to NOD32 on all the machines I cared about. I can configure NOD32 Antivirus to update itself automatically and not bother me with popups or trivial notifications, and I still get to choose when I install my usual Windows Updates.

Oh well, it's just annoying to see the notification on the lock screen, but I'll deal with it.

You can open "Windows Update > View update history", you'll see 'Definition Update for <product name> - KB###### (Definition x.xxx.xxx.x). There's a 'Date Installed' column there too, so you can see if you missed the previous daily update.

So I will probably be purchasing a full version of Win8 sometime this week for my home desktop computer. I am looking forward to seeing how the Xbox Music stuff works. I used to have a Zune a couple of years ago, and really enjoyed the 10 free songs per month deal they had, but I guess they killed that off, unless you were grandfathered into the deal. I'd probably buy into the Xbox Music streaming subscription service if they offered an OSX client, as that is what I use at work (which is where most of my music listening occurs). I heard rumors that they were planning on making an iOS client, but I haven't heard anything about them developing an OSX client. It seems silly to me that they would put so much effort into a music streaming service and then deny someone willing to pay a subscription just because they use a different OS. I don't know if the published information about how many songs Xbox Music has in their catalog is true or not, but if it is, they have double the music selection of Spotify, which is the service I currently use.

Win+Q its the same for all apps. Don't even need to open them to use it. Do apps that update come with any form of patch notes? And do you need to keep the store open to finish updating them or does the updater run in the background?

I've been having an issue lately with updating multiple apps from the store not working correctly. Yesterday I had 3 apps that could be updated, but when I click to install it would all go to 'pending' then automatically go to the screen saying the apps have been installed. If I backed out and went back into the screen it would still show the apps as needing updates. Selecting each app individually worked fine after multiple attempts of a mass update. I believe other people have mentioned this issue before, so FYI.

I'm looking at upgrading to an SSD here in a few weeks, and just wanted to make sure I have the "clean install" process correct for Windows 8 on a new drive. I bought the actual physical media Windows 8 Professional and I did install it on my current HD. -Install SSD -Install Windows 7 -Upgrade to Windows 8 -Enjoy If there is a better process of doing this, I'm open to suggestions. I'm under the impression that without having the system builder version of Windows 8, you can't actually do a clean install. Or is cloning the actual best option here instead of doing a clean install?

You can do a totally clean Win8 install with the "Reset" option found in system settings (like Refresh but more severe!)

Regarding the somewhat dodgy "lie to get it for 14.99" thing, Microsoft appear to have closed that loophole now. It now asks for the product key that came with your machine, for validation.

Netflix and Hulu already have metro apps so if you use those a lot given that you have it hooked up to your TV it'd be pretty good for that

Is it okay to ask general inquiries that are kinda hard to google? I hear win8 handles memory and whatnot a lot more smartly now, and there's less "a process freezes, it is forever irreversible." type ordeals or they are outright abolished and solved in a way where a frozen program will never just hang around forever. If that's true that would be wonderous, because freezing and sticking programs are starting to drive me nuts in win7 related to a few programs both old and new. Where if they crash they remain in the task manager to taunt me till I reboot

Economy Clown Car posted:Is it okay to ask general inquiries that are kinda hard to google? App-store apps work under the new improved smarter memory model. Regular desktop apps work largely the same as they did in Win7. There's something in Win8 called the "PLM", Process Lifetime Manager. If it sees that an app is unresponsive, then it terminates it completely. If you switch away from an app, then the PLM tells it: "suspend yourself". The app now has to make sure it saves any and all state. It has about 7 seconds to comply. If it fails to indicate that it's finished within this time, then the PLM terminates it completely. But if the app is well-behaved, and indicates that it's finished within this time, this is where the magic happens. The PLM knows that the app is well-behaved and responsive. So it freezes every single CPU thread of the app, so the app is guaranteed to take 0 CPU resources. It marks all the app's RAM as "up for grabs", meaning that other apps can use it if they have need. Summary: for app-store apps, when you switch away from them, the system (1) guarantees that they take zero battery or resources, (2) makes them instantaneous to switch back to, unless that's made impossible by subsequent demands.

I'm having problems with the Messaging app, it's not letting me send or receive any messages. "We can't send a message right now" is the error I get. Has anyone figured a way to fix this? Googling isn't helping so much as throwing a lot of temporary fixes at it which seems to come back randomly so I was wondering if there was a more permanent solution.
