Non-upgrade installs
If you want to install Windows 8 without having a prior version already installed to upgrade from, you'll need a OEM (aka, stand alone "System Builder") copy. Currently this is available from retailers such as Newegg priced at $99.99 for Windows 8 and $139.99 for Windows 8 Pro.

It is reportedly possible to run the Upgrade Assistant on a machine with Windows installed already, then use that ISO and key to install on a separate machine without a prior installation. At least be aware that this runs against the EULA license agreement you surely read & agreed to when you ran the installer.

Reports are that the link with the $15 "upgrade" license are no longer working, but it's also mentioned in the OP if you want to give it a shot.

The $40 upgrade will work, using the "rearm" trick to activate it (see http://forums.somethingawful.com/sh...3#post409144771). Though of course it'd be very much against the EULA and just basically a middle ground between legitimacy and outright piracy :P

But no, the 15 one seems to be tightened up now.

Someone posted a link to a tile pack on the first page that I really liked, but I can't seem to get it to work. I can change the program icons to the tile icons, but then on the Start screen the icon still has a "border" on the tile. How do I make these icons take up the whole tile space?

EDIT: Also, my Show Notifications From These Apps field is blank and notifications never show up anywhere, ever.

Though they might get it anyway. the UI acts well as a 10-foot UI.

Just installed Windows 8 a few days ago and it's been working great. There's just one problem. I've been having trouble adding Windows Media Center. I enter the product key and after getting 15% into the upgrade, it just says "Failure to install software" or something to that effect and resets my computer to where it was before.

Has anyone else been running into this problem?

How long after you install Windows 8 do you have to insert a key?

I was getting that issue with media center also and I found a thread on another forum indicating it is a semi wide spread problem acknowledged by Microsoft (also if you look at the logs it reports error during download and such).

At least in the installs I've done with a DreamSpark ISO, you have to enter the key during the installation.

Okay, I was wondering if it was just something I did wrong. Guess not! Hopefully, Microsoft will have more of a response to this.

So I rebooted retail Win8 to install new updates, and suddenly PS3mediaserver & my PS3 can no longer communicate. Anyone have an idea? I've poked through the firewall rules but don't see an obvious difference.

edit: frustratingly the servers-per-user-account-that-I-don't-understand-how-to-use show up, but not PS3mediasever. At this point I wouldn't mind just streaming MP3s, but I need videos on again eventually. I'm using Win8 Pro. I've tried explicitly enabling upnp discovery and "wireless portable devices devices-in" through the advanced section of the Windows Firewall (which seem to cover the main upnp ports), but no dice.

edit2: found this thread, but following the instructions doesn't seem to have helped. Also took me a while to figure out that the Metro settings are on a pop-up menu from idling the mouse on the right-hand side.
I reinstalled Java, removed 64-bit Java, checked the SSDP service, reinstalled PS3mediaserver, hosed around with ports for hours.

I finally got smart and turned off the Windows Firewall (on private networks) ... and PS3mediaserver STILL didn't work.

At this point I'd pretty much isolated that the problem wasn't actually my Win8 computer. So I unplugged my router and the gigabit switch that gives me a 1000 Mb connection between my PC and PS3, plugged them back in, and the loving media server magically started working again. It is a mystery.

I've been using this set up for years before Win8 came along. I have no idea why it suddenly failed. The other weird part is that the PS3 could still see the built-in Win8 media server while PS3MS wasn't being acknowledged.

Cool things:

- Right click the bottom left corner for the same admin shortcuts as the win+x
- Shut down in fewer clicks with alt+f4 on the desktop
- Right click the bottom right corner to bring up a menu to show the desktop or to peek at it

Not so cool things:

- There is a certain update that doesn't seem to work. It will take forever to install, get stuck at 13%, then reboot a few times before uninstalling itself. I can't remember the number, but it's 169.9 MB in size.
- Huge window borders are the default setting with no simple way of changing it. You can change it in the registry, though (hkey_current_user\control panel\desktop\windowmetrics borderwidth and paddedborderwidth)

This is the post-General Availability patch roll up. It's basically a mini-Service Pack to address issues found in RTM. It's pretty imperative that you install it, and Microsoft offers free technical support for Windows Update issues. So, rather than complain about it on a forum where probably nobody can help, call Microsoft and get it resolved right away.

In fact, that would be some great advice to put in the OP.

Has anyone had trouble installing Win8 on a PC with WiFi? When I tried it the computer kept crashing, sometimes during the install, sometimes during operation. I solved the problem by removing my WiFi card (luckily I don't need it).

It sounds like Win8 may have been trying to install drivers, maybe generic ones, for that, but they weren't jiving with the card and causing it to crash.

You could try downloading drivers for it from the manufacturer's website, installing them, then putting the card back in. Hopefully Win 8 would use the drivers. If the manufacturer doesn't make Win 8 drivers yet, I'd just try the most recent ones.

Windows 8 is set up to perform "system maintenance" (update applications, update Windows, defrag, etc...) at 3am by default and will wake up your computer to do so. If you go into System Settings you'll find an option to change the time maintenance is performed and a toggle that will control whether or not your PC will come out of sleep at that time to do so.

Asked this in the old thread but got on answer: I've got a Mackie FireWire Audio interface. If I were to upgrade, would the W7 drivers work with W8? Either out of the box or with a bit of .inf file fiddling? I'm not sure they're going to be getting an update from the manufacturer.

It gives me the USB controller that my keyboard is plugged into, probably from the other day I assume. I'm pretty sure the system woke itself for maintenance tasks, I've disabling it now.

It is definitely not listed on the Hardware Compatibility List. I would just give it a shot. You may be able to run it in Windows 7 compatibility mode.

This is a guess, but if you're using the smartdj feature it will create a radio station based on the song/artist you picked. Here's the important part assuming I'm correct (zune pass does this), this will include your local music as well if it falls under that genre/criteria since hey it's already here so use it right? That may be why you get ads, you're technically listening to the free Xbox music with your music spliced in at intervals.

However if you're just flat out listening to only your local music in a custom playlist, I don't know man.
