The $40 upgrade will work, using the "rearm" trick to activate it (see http://forums.somethingawful.com/sh...3#post409144771). Though of course it'd be very much against the EULA and just basically a middle ground between legitimacy and outright piracy :P But no, the 15 one seems to be tightened up now.

Someone posted a link to a tile pack on the first page that I really liked, but I can't seem to get it to work. I can change the program icons to the tile icons, but then on the Start screen the icon still has a "border" on the tile. How do I make these icons take up the whole tile space? EDIT: Also, my Show Notifications From These Apps field is blank and notifications never show up anywhere, ever. Xaander fucked around with this message at Nov 1, 2012 around 22:02 |

Just installed Windows 8 a few days ago and it's been working great. There's just one problem. I've been having trouble adding Windows Media Center. I enter the product key and after getting 15% into the upgrade, it just says "Failure to install software" or something to that effect and resets my computer to where it was before. Has anyone else been running into this problem? Friends Are Evil fucked around with this message at Nov 2, 2012 around 01:20 |

How long after you install Windows 8 do you have to insert a key?

I was getting that issue with media center also and I found a thread on another forum indicating it is a semi wide spread problem acknowledged by Microsoft (also if you look at the logs it reports error during download and such).

teethgrinder posted:So I rebooted retail Win8 to install new updates, and suddenly PS3mediaserver & my PS3 can no longer communicate. Anyone have an idea? I've poked through the firewall rules but don't see an obvious difference. I finally got smart and turned off the Windows Firewall (on private networks) ... and PS3mediaserver STILL didn't work. At this point I'd pretty much isolated that the problem wasn't actually my Win8 computer. So I unplugged my router and the gigabit switch that gives me a 1000 Mb connection between my PC and PS3, plugged them back in, and the loving media server magically started working again. It is a mystery. I've been using this set up for years before Win8 came along. I have no idea why it suddenly failed. The other weird part is that the PS3 could still see the built-in Win8 media server while PS3MS wasn't being acknowledged. teethgrinder fucked around with this message at Nov 2, 2012 around 03:19 |

Cool things: - Right click the bottom left corner for the same admin shortcuts as the win+x - Shut down in fewer clicks with alt+f4 on the desktop - Right click the bottom right corner to bring up a menu to show the desktop or to peek at it Not so cool things: - There is a certain update that doesn't seem to work. It will take forever to install, get stuck at 13%, then reboot a few times before uninstalling itself. I can't remember the number, but it's 169.9 MB in size. - Huge window borders are the default setting with no simple way of changing it. You can change it in the registry, though (hkey_current_user\control panel\desktop\windowmetrics borderwidth and paddedborderwidth)

Wild EEPROM posted:Not so cool things: This is the post-General Availability patch roll up. It's basically a mini-Service Pack to address issues found in RTM. It's pretty imperative that you install it, and Microsoft offers free technical support for Windows Update issues. So, rather than complain about it on a forum where probably nobody can help, call Microsoft and get it resolved right away. In fact, that would be some great advice to put in the OP.

Anyone else have Windows 8 spontaneously wake itself from S3 Sleep? I've disabled all of the ways for devices to wake it. Going through Event Viewer all I can find is some check for Metro apps on the store at 3am and a system defrag.

Has anyone had trouble installing Win8 on a PC with WiFi? When I tried it the computer kept crashing, sometimes during the install, sometimes during operation. I solved the problem by removing my WiFi card (luckily I don't need it).

It sounds like Win8 may have been trying to install drivers, maybe generic ones, for that, but they weren't jiving with the card and causing it to crash. You could try downloading drivers for it from the manufacturer's website, installing them, then putting the card back in. Hopefully Win 8 would use the drivers. If the manufacturer doesn't make Win 8 drivers yet, I'd just try the most recent ones.

If you go into System Settings you'll find an option to change the time maintenance is performed and a toggle that will control whether or not your PC will come out of sleep at that time to do so. Weird, I could have sworn I checked the scheduling but I must have missed it, thanks.

The "People" app is alright, but all of my contacts have the generic "floating head on grey background" graphic. For the life of me, I can't figure out how to assign pictures to contacts, either in the People app or on outlook.com. What silly thing am I missing? (Even if I linked People to my Facebook account, that would only cover maybe 1/3 of my contacts/friends.)

Asked this in the old thread but got on answer: I've got a Mackie FireWire Audio interface. If I were to upgrade, would the W7 drivers work with W8? Either out of the box or with a bit of .inf file fiddling? I'm not sure they're going to be getting an update from the manufacturer.

So...is there any way to get rid of the ads that play in the built-in music app? I would expect ads if I was streaming from them, but not when I'm listening from my own music collection...it's kinda jarring and bush league.

Here's the important part assuming I'm correct (zune pass does this), this will include your local music as well if it falls under that genre/criteria since hey it's already here so use it right? That may be why you get ads, you're technically listening to the free Xbox music with your music spliced in at intervals. However if you're just flat out listening to only your local music in a custom playlist, I don't know man.

When you go to your collection to pick an album, and you view the album in a list, is there a cloud icon under the album year? I wonder if you happen to be streaming the album instead of playing it from disk.
