I'm very happy with Windows 8 but I am super excited about 50/50 Snap Views.

Caged posted:Or just don't read The Verge I can't remember if The Verge started the trend before or after, but a lot of the confusion started from a comment from Tami Reller that stated that they would SKUs and costs later which just accelerated the rumors. But on the other hand, as Paul Thurrott has said several times over, he knows where they are getting their info, and they post every single bit of it as an exclusive even if it doesn't make sense. The general rule of thumb I follow is if it's a sensational title consider it linkbait until someone the company actually confirms it.

The SKU's bit is probably true. I would expect that when 8.1 goes gold they will sell it directly, and that could potentially be a new SKU. And from an internal/corporate perspective there probably is a price tag on it, it's just that the price tag is equal to the 8.0 price tag and then 8.0 isn't available for licensing or OEM sales any more. It's just a matter of understanding that for end users who own Windows 8 already, there's no additional cost.

![]() What would cause something like this? Explorer.exe won't open anymore. I can make programs open and still access those I already have open by just going to the Start Screen and messing around in there to open the program I have open. I can go to Task Manager from there and open programs too. It shows that Windows Explorer isn't running so when I TRY to run it by running explorer.exe, it opens up a Windows Explorer window...and doesn't bother to restart into normal desktop mode. A reboot fixes this, but the problem has happened constantly and it's never happened on any previous version of Windows. Is there a way to start completely from scratch with 8 and not upgrade all the time? Upgrading (from 7 to 8) has clearly broken something...

You might as well install clean, anyway, if you're already open to the idea. I installed clean from my Windows 8 "upgrade" disc. It worked fine. Just click "advanced" early on and format your Windows drive/partition from within your bootable Windows 8 install media, then continue with the install. Some checklist steps I jotted down for before reinstalling Windows:

It somehow fixed itself, but I'll definitely save these instructions for later since it's happened more than once. Thanks!

If anyone has issues with the latest round of Windows updates failing, I found that installing them individually one at a time works.

You can run the built in Reset functionality to do this. It's in PC Settings -> General at the bottom (or start search settings: Win+W, "reset")

Does all of the regular Desktop startup stuff get accomplished if you haven't launched Desktop yet? Making is there isn't a time lag for having a fully ready desktop if you power on and leave it at the start menu versus making sure you launch desktop as soon as you can and walk away while it does all its nebulous things. If Desktop is as quickly ready without being launched yet I'd agree that a straight to desktop mode isn't really necessary.

Yes, it all loads up even when the start menu is up. Additionally, if you click an icon on the start menu for a desktop application, it opens as fast as going to the desktop and then clicking the desktop shortcut or pinned shortcut etc. Actually faster, since it's one click instead of two. Edit: I can see an argument either way, that it should start on the desktop or start on the start menu. I personally have not had any problems with it, considering I can click any application or the desktop button, and having the start menu come up first is nice so I can get a glance at the weather and mail widgets before moving along if I want to. beejay fucked around with this message at May 15, 2013 around 17:00 |

Yeah, if that's the case I don't care. You're right that the Start Screen gets its best use by being visible for an at a glance status of your world so starting there is not a bad idea. And if it's just one click but no real time lost to get to desktop that's kind of meaningless.

This may be a stupid question, but where do I find Media Center? I have Windows 8 Pro with Media Center. It says so when I view my system properties in Control Panel. I got Media Center for free with the promotion that was running before a certain date at the end of last year. I think I've used it once before, but I never really had a reason to use it again until now. I've searched for it and I can't seem to find it on my computer. Googling this seems to just give me instructions on how to buy it. I also went to Turn Windows Features On Or Off and it's checked off as being installed on that menu. It's under "Windows Accessories" in the All Apps section. Alternatively, press start and type "media center". If that doesn't work then it's in C:\Windows\ehome\ with the file name ehshell.exe.

Is this a bug with my Windows 8 install or is this supposed to happen: when I boot into Windows and the Metro start menu comes up, if I don't do anything, or I select a Metro app like the Store, it'll drop me to the desktop after about 10 seconds. It's kind of annoying and I don't know why that would be a feature if it's supposed to happen. It's not killing any processes, as I can still get back to whatever I was in with the top left corner menu.

Apologies if this has been asked before - haven't seen it on the last few pages, so here goes. I bought the Windows 8 upgrade for my main computer, which has just recently poo poo the bed. I have to get all new parts for it - did I screw myself out of Windows 8? I prefer it to 7, and I'd really like to install it again without shelling out whatever they want for another upgrade key. Anything I can do or am I stuck going back to 7?
