Just installed this and went to reduce the page file size and noticed that Windows 8 is smart enough to do that already. Instead of it being 8GB (to match my ram) it's about 4GB which is what I would set it to.

Overall it seems pretty snappy and I generally like the new look. Or at least I like it now that I've got classic shell installed. I don't think I will be switching back to 7.

Also the classic shell install instructions don't seem to work for me. The part about going to view -> toolbars doesn't work as I don't have a toolbar option. However it works fine anyway. So if anyone else runs into that just ignore it I guess.

Found the source of instability on my netbook Win8 install: the wifi card, an Atheros AR5BXB63. I was getting one or more BSODs per day, as well as random slowdowns, network cutouts, and other stuff. At one point I crashed so hard I had to reinstall the system from an image I'd (luckily) made using Paragon Backup & Recovery.

A Google search suggested it might be the wireless card, so for a mere $11 shipped I picked up an Intel 4965AGN. Holy cow, what a difference. Suddenly my system feels solid and stable--not to mention surprisingly nimble on Win8.

Also, a tip! Want to add an "All Programs" menu to your desktop toolbar without installing Classic Shell or Start8?

1. Navigate to desktop (e.g. Win + D).
2. Right click the toolbar, select Toolbars --> New toolbar . . .
3. In the "Folder" field, enter "%ProgramData%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs" and click Select Folder.

Presto, on the right side of your toolbar is a little ">>" icon that will show all installed desktop programs.

Bonus tip! Want to log on straight into the desktop, bypassing that pesky Start menu?

1. Launch the Task Scheduler. (e.g. go to Start menu, start typing "scheduler" until the app is visible, click to launch.)
2. Select Action --> Create Task . . .
3. Under the "General" tab, give it a name (e.g. "Logon to Desktop").
4. Under the "Triggers" tab, click "New . . . ", then next to "Begin the task:" choose "At log on".
5. Under the "Actions" tab, click "New . . .", then under "Program/script:" type "explorer".
6. Click "OK".

Goodbye, Start menu! Until you need it, when it's just a click of the Win key away. (You might see the Start menu briefly at logon before going to the desktop).

A few weeks ago I bought a Lenovo U410, and upgraded to Win8 on release date. After that, it would take ages to start up. Found out the Lenovo program "Boot Shield" was messing something up. I'm fairly disappointed in Lenovo, they are usually pretty fast with drivers. Other than that, Windows 8 has actually been running smooth as hell for me. Only thing for me, have been getting used to it on 3 screens. The entire dragging and dropping from the modern UI and such.

Is anyone else having trouble connecting Android devices over USB to windows 8 machines? Both my Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7 cause a "USB Device has Malfunctioned" pop-up on both of my win 8 computers, I can't even access them as storage devices.

EDIT:
Apparently win 8 just hates this particular USB cable, which is weird since it works fine with these devices on a win 7 machine. Even weirder when it works fine with other devices on the win 8 machines. Huh.

I've had similar issues with my X220T. It was a development model for windows 8 for christ sake and the new drivers/software from lenovo ALL cause issues. The fingerprint software doesnt work, the sound drivers caused my sound to stop working altogether and the trackpad drivers causes the middle button to do that stupid "scroll" in browsers.

My advice is to just roll with the drivers windows 8 provides via windows update. Haven't had any issue with those.

I apologize if this has been asked a dozen times, but how do you do change the inactivity time before Windows 8 goes to the lock-screen? I don't want to disable it completely, but it seems to dump me back there in about two minutes time or less and its really annoying. I've told my laptop to go to a black screen after 30 minutes of inactivity and to sleep after 60, but Windows 8 seems to be ignoring this completely.

I'm really liking Windows 8 so far. Did a clean install since I didn't want to deal with upgrade shenanigans. I've been fiddling around with the calendar and it seems like it doesn't support full google calendar syncing just yet. Is there a way to at least make different colored events within a calendar? A cheap work around I can think of is having a separate synced google account for each calendar but that seems like too much work.

This isn't in the OP but I think it's a pretty interesting feature in 8. So you can set pin or picture password for your device that will log you into your machine but is different than your MS account password. So if someone guesses your computer password or steals your laptop you don't have to worry about them getting the password to your MS account. Then you can log onto your Microsoft account through the browser and deactivate that machines access to your MS account. Plus you can make your MS account password ridiculously difficult but then have a more convenient password for your tablet.

I didn't see it in the OP or in any message in this topic. Does anyone know what the install limit is on Windows 8? I have installed it on two machines using the same key and it didn't complain. I remember in Windows 7 if you did the telephone activation and said you hadn't installed it on any previous machines then it would work every time.

The upgrade only works on one computer. You'll get a "key taken" on your second installation in the activation screen.

I'm using a key from Dreamspark. Presumably this would be the same as a boxed copy and not an upgrade. I want to think my copy of 7 Ultimate I bought had a 5 install limit so I feel it might be something like that. I could be completely wrong though, for some reason this information isn't very widely published. I always found myself trying to use google to find it out.

I get a free copy of Windows 8 Professional through school so I'm thinking of upgrading. Does anyone else here use one of those start menu addons (I read about that "Start8" one from Stardock) fulltime? Is it worth it getting something like that, or sucking it up and forcing myself to get used to Metro?

Also, one more thing I've been wondering about. Windows 8 seems to really focus on a lot of Microsoft's services, like Skydrive, Hotmail, etc. I use none of those, all Google stuff and things like Dropbox. Am I going have a slightly crippled experience, or does everything get along with the new interface and applications pretty well? I did see the Google Calender issue in the OP which is slightly annoying as I use something like 6-8 different calenders regularly on Google.

How are you getting free copies of Windows 8 through your schools? I'm still a student until December, so I'm hoping on cashing in on my student status while I can. I did the $40 upgrade on my laptop, and I'm really not looking forward to spending that much again to upgrade my desktop. Someone mentioned DreamSpark, but I'm not seeing any options through that.

E: I found where you can get it free as a student, after some poking around. Sadly, my university isn't a DreamSpark Premium subscriber, so no free download for me. Stupid non-paying teaching internship that won't allow me to have a job

In that case you'll want to try the new reset/refresh options first I think.

I replaced the processor and motherboard on my machine and it flagged my key as being used by another machine. I had to go through a phone call with the automated line, feeding it the activation code to get things rolling again. I believe it let me get Windows Updates in the mean time. I only noticed it wasn't activated because the version number watermark popped up in the corner of the Desktop app.

I use no Microsoft services. I sign in with my Gmail account and don't even think about anything "Microsoft" beyond Windows. Most apps have nothing to do with Microsoft other than downloading them from Microsoft's store.

As for Start Menus, I bought Start8 and it is *really* close to an authentic Windows 7 experience.

However, there is a program called "StartIsBack" - it unlocks hidden functions in the OS to put back the real Start Menu.

Third-party SATA driver maybe. Also I'm assuming you did this check in Device Manager and Disk Management, instead of just in Windows Explorer.

If you didn't, and the drives show up (Device Manager) but the volumes don't, just try remounting them manually. They should stick around after restarts from then on.

(If it's what jiffypop45 brought up and I completely skipped over it'll show up in device manager AND disk management okay but not in Windows Explorer... until you show empty drives.)
